My father married Elsie Lillian GALL on April 9, 1937 (she was born 4/9/1916). Dad met Elsie when she was working for her sister, Kate HOFFMAN wife of William HOFFMAN, who lived across the road from the Thurstenson farm.
I have a faint recollection of the Lutheran Church in Anoka. It seems it was sort of built into the side of a hill. I would like to gain some history on this church, the school northeast of the farm and the school in town (I think Joe and Anna attended some at the Anoka town school also).
I have been very curious about a person in our family's past by the name of Emil ANDERSSON. He emigrated to New York in 1904 when he was 16 years old. The emigration records show on the ticket next to his travelled the maid Anna ANDERSSON from the same community, Svenskop in Sweden. She was 19 and I wonder if this was his sister.
Emil may have lived with my grandfather, Peter THURSTENSON, after his marriage in 1908. We would like to learn more about this. Peter THURSTENSON was listed as Emil ANDERSSON'S nearest relative with the military. We have the death certificate indicating he was a Private of Company F of 109th Engineers and he died in service to his country on 1/20/1918. We have a large certificate from the President of France indicating France gave him a medal of honor and another from Woodrow Wilson indicating a medal of honor from the US.
The curiosity of Emil's ties to my grandfather and father has been very strong. We don't know if Emil married while in the states and left any family behind - this would be
likely since he would have 30 years old when he died and probably in his late 20's when he joined the military. We have reason to believe he took his military training in Deming, NM. We suspect he may have joined an Ola and Elna Persdotter LUND in Hooper, Nebraska after his arrival in New York. Peter THURSTENSON had escorted Elna and her 4 year old daughter Ingri Lovisa to Hooper in 1888 to join her husband who had arrived one year earlier. If anyone can share any clues regarding this man, we would greatly appreciate you help. Joe E. Thurstenson, Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
