BENTZ, FERNAU, FRITZ, GALL, STROH, WIEDERICH posted by Joe E. Thurstenson on Monday, December 21, 2009

I notice several over the years have been touching on the Fritz surname. I have Lola Fritz marrying my first cousin 2x removed (Gottlieb Guy Wiederich). If anyone is interested in exploring common interests with these surnames, I am open to that. I had a Miss Fritz as my 3rd and 4th grade school teacher in Fairfax, SD.

SCHRODER posted by Donna Smith on Friday, April 2, 2010

My great grandfather Henry W Schroder, wife Anna Marie, and children Sophie C, Henry W, Jr, and Anna Pauline lived about six miles (NE ?) from Spencer, 1891 - 1900.
Anna Pauline was born (1896) in the country on the Schroder homestead (purchased through the "Ponca Indian Lands Act"). Henry Schroder, Sr, was a carpenter, emmigrant from Schelswig-Holstein Prussia (both he and his wife were born in Denmark). They moved to Boyd County explicitly to purchase land, through the adjacent county Land Office. In 1900 they moved to Keokuk Iowa. Somewhere along that route, or time period, the family attended a Buffalo Bill "Wild West Show" (perhaps at the Sioux City Iowa Fair, but am not certain).
Would you know of any information I might access to see their names mentioned? I think that Henry Jr, too, was born in 1892/3 on the homestead place. The family were members or a Lutheran Church in the area. I once received an interlibrary loan book about Spencer, early pioneer history, but there was no mention of them. My great grandfather worked in Gross, and around the area, with building construction.
Native Americans (Ponca, or Sioux) often frequented their homestead for food, and were accommodated whenever possible. In thanks, my great-grandmother was given a handmade shawl and a porcupine pincushion. The Schroder homestead was near a river, and in the winter, the Indians crossed over the frozen water.
My great grandparents eventually migrated to western Kansas and homesteaded in Trego County Kansas, where they resided until their deaths.
Sincerely,
Donna Smith
