MAJORS CEMETERY
Majors Cemetery Gate

Majors Cemetery and United Presbyterian Congregation of Majors are about
a fourth of a mile west of where the Majors Post office was located.
The cemetery is in Cedar Township, Section 15, near the corner of
265th Road and Imperial Ave.

The original owner of the land was the mother of Martha Jane Huston. She deeded or willed it to her daughter Martha Jane Huston some time before the year 1887.

On April 27, 1887, Martha Jane Huston and her husband Jonathan, deeded three acres of land, to United Presbyterian Congregation of Majors, for church and cemetery purposes only. A church and parsonage was built on this land, and cemetery started.

It was generally told by old timers of that era that the Presbyterian Congregation held services in the Cedar Creek school house until the new church and parsonage was built. Regular services were held in this church until approximately some where between 1915 and 1918 when regular services were discontinued, and the Church building was used for a meeting place, school programs, funerals etc. It was finally sold and moved to Kearney where it was remodeled for a home. The parsonage was either torn down or moved before the church was moved. The mother of Martha Jane Huston was the first person buried in the north west corner of these three acres, which was long before Martha Jane Huston deeded these three acres to the church. There are 2 other graves adjoining hers whose names are unknown. It was thought by old settlers that they were travelers going thru the country and got sick and died in the vicinity, and were buried here before it was a cemetery.
