INTRODUCTORY
___________________________

Herewith is presented the third edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Kearney City Directory, which we feel confident the Public will find equal, if not superior to any, of its predecessors. The City Directory is a matter of great importance to the community, for it clearly portrays the City and its Institutions and the growth and progress as no other work can. This book represents the highest development of Directory making, and neither effort nor money were spared to make it complete in all its departments. It embraces all the features of the largest Directories that are regarded as meritorious and some new ones peculiarly adapted to this locality are included. The data has been gathered and compiled by experienced men under a system that has been perfected through a long term of years, and while humanity is fallible, yet the system under which the data for this Directory was gathered and proven is infallible, and the assurance is given that it is as complete and accurate as it is possible to produce a work of this nature.
A personal canvass of every ward, street, block and house, the careful compilation of each day's return, the checking of each name twice, the careful grand revision after all the field work is done, all the painstaking and minute investigations and corrections employed to insure accuracy and completeness are no small nor easy task.
The City Directory is a publication in which the entire population is represented and interested. It is used by all classes and conditions of people in every locality in the City and by every stranger that comes within the city limits every day in the year. The use of City Directories is becoming more general and their great importance as business factors is now universally recognized. There is nothing more conducive to development and extension of commerce than an easy means of communication such as is afforded by a complete and reliable City Directory. It is an unexcelled medium for use in the purchase of goods, and every business man should avail himself of the opportunity which it offers for the full and proper classification of his business and for keeping his card where it may be found at all times by those who seek such information. Every business and professional man should spend some time examining the City Directory. He will find it full of profitable suggestions.

Page 10

Keep the City Directory in a convenient place for frequent reference and invite your customers to use it. You will extend your acquaintance and advertise your business and your establishment will be more popular and profitable.
This Directory contains the names of all adult citizens of Kearney, with their occupation, place of business and dwelling; also a Householders Directory arranged in numerical order, alphabetically by streets, showing the occupants of any building in the City, an expensive but important feature of this Directory. Pages 11 to 26 contain what is technically termed "Miscellaneous Information," such as the Government of the City and County, embracing the names of officers, etc. Then follow in regular alphabetical order the list of Asylums and Hospitals, Banks, Cemeteries, Churches, Clubs, Colleges and Schools, Grand Army of the Republic, Post Office, Railroads, Societies, Street and Avenue Guide.
A Classified Business Directory of all persons doing business in Kearney will be found in the last section of the work. This classified Business Directory will be appreciated as a useful purchaser's guide both by the residents of Kearney as will as by others who look to this market for supplies.

POPULATION

Kearney is larger and better than ever before, and the increase in the number of names in this Directory speaks emphatically for what the city is and will be in the future. There are in this volume 3,432 names, which, multiplied by 2+ to represent the names of married women and children whose names are not included in the Directory, indicates a population of 8,580. Kearney has a wholesome climate and an enterprising and energetic population with a reputation for commercial integrity. It is a railroad and distributing center for a large and progressive section, and is enjoying a steady and substantial growth.
Thanking our patrons and the public for courtesies extended to our representatives while they were gathering data and soliciting patronage, we remain

Respectfully   The Publishers,
R. L. POLK & CO.
