On July 18, 1950, her only child, Ruby Jeanne, along with Ruby's husband, Bill Pokorney, and two sons were killed in an auto accident. Nellie and her husband then raised the two surviving boys

Survivors include: husband; daughters, Toni Barrier of Norman, Okla., Mary DeFord of Salt Lake City and Rosemary of Broken Bow; sister, Margaret Rodriguez of Kearney; brothers, Charles Galvan of South Dakota and Raymond Galvan of Tacoma, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren
Was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one brother and three sisters
