After death of first husband, began a 25-year career as professor of voice and director of opera at Louisiana Tech University, the State University of New York at Fredonia and Southern Illinois University; moved to Commerce, served as executive secretary of National Opera Association until 1991. Under professional name, Mary Elaine Wallace, co-authored two opera reference books with her son; wrote "Upstage, Downstage," a handbook for university opera directors
Survivors include her husband; granddaughter, Heather Wallace; stepsons, Edmund, Richard and Russell House and their families; stepdaughter, Kathryn House and family; and brothers-in-law, Dean Wallace and Harry Wallace and their families
