Was diabetic and blind for more than 20 years; had suffered the loss of both of his legs and was a paraplegic; had dialysis treatments for more than 20 years; continued to deal with numerous other health issues, but maintained his sunny outlook and his compassion for others; was a volunteer caller from Good Samaritan Hospital, given 10 to 15 names of people in the hospital who may be bedridden or in the community who were homebound, without family to call and wish them a good day; worked as a ham-radio operator assisting in storm tracking; was the Nebraska Emergency Operations Officer for MARS; coordinated with local family members of soldiers in Iraq to set a phone contact with their family members who were in areas difficult to reach; took part in a group for the visually impaired in the area, called VIPS, Visually Impaired Peer Support

Activities: member of Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River for many years, served on the building committee and finance committee and was church treasurer; was on the District 76 School Board, served as treasurer; was the leader of 76 Huskers 4-H Club and past ASCS committee man and FmHA committee man; was appointed to serve on the draft board during the Vietnam War; was a forerunner in the early years of Husker Harvest Days; later was the farm manager and took over the farming at the site, the exhibit area and test plots for a number of years; past member of the chamber of commerce, the AIN board and the Industrial Foundation; past member of the Grand Island Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow; member of the American Legion Club, Platt Duetsche Society and the Saddle Club, and a board member of Crime Stoppers; admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska and a member of the Grand Island Port; was elected to the City Council from Grand Island Ward 2, and in 1990 was elected mayor; enjoyed ice fishing, playing cards and visiting with friends and family
