Was diabetic and blind for more than 20 years; had suffered the loss of both of his legs and was a paraplegic; had dialysis treatments for more than 20 years; continued to deal with numerous other health issues, but maintained his sunny outlook and his compassion for others; was a volunteer caller from Good Samaritan Hospital, given 10 to 15 names of people in the hospital who may be bedridden or in the community who were homebound, without family to call and wish them a good day; worked as a ham-radio operator assisting in storm tracking; was the Nebraska Emergency Operations Officer for MARS; coordinated with local family members of soldiers in Iraq to set a phone contact with their family members who were in areas difficult to reach; took part in a group for the visually impaired in the area, called VIPS, Visually Impaired Peer Support
