Military: joined U.S. Army as a medic in 1943; participated in D-Day, June 6, 1944, jumping into combat over the French countryside with the rest of the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division; suffered significant injuries and earned the first of his two Purple Hearts; having recovered, he rejoined his unit and rode a glider into Holland as part of the Allies' ongoing invasion of Europe; moved with the rest of the 101st to Bastogne, Belgium, was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge; spent four months as a prisoner of war in Germany; upon liberation in spring 1945, was sent to Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center to recover from injuries suffered while a POW, earned a second Purple Heart and was honorably discharged from the Army

Sold heavy construction equipment for over 40 years, retired in 1993, moved back to Nebraska in 2005, settled in Kearney
