Worked at ABC Drug store as an employee, 1962-1970; went into partnership to purchase ABC Drug, 1970-2008, and was eventually sole owner and operator; his philosophy was to always treat others like family; highly respected by many in the community; was quite active up until his time of death and lived a full and happy life
Activities: active church member at First Presbyterian Church in Kearney for almost 50 years; member of the Nebraska Pharmacy Association for more than 40 years; was a big Nebraska football fan and a season ticket holder for more than 45 years; enjoyed all Nebraska high school and college sports and was also an avid golf player; was known for his good advice, kind nature and ability to talk to anyone; in retirement, enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and his family
Survivors include his wife, Sandra “Sandi”; their children and their spouses, Kelli and Paul Novak of Blair, Neb., Ryan and Karen Asher of Albuquerque, N.M., and Stuart and Michelle Asher of Lincoln; three grandchildren, Stephen Novak, Justin Novak and Erin Asher; and two of his siblings, Carol McGahan of Grand Island, Neb., and Ron and wife Shary Asher of North Platte, Neb., and brother-in-law, Mark and wife Marilyn Herbers of Titusville, Fla., and their families

Moved to Sterling, Illinois, accepted a position with the U.S. Treasury Department, Comptroller of the Currency, as a national bank examiner; later, with a desire to be closer to families, took a position with NW Bank Corporation (BANCO) as an examiner and the family moved to Edina, Minn.; later worked with Center Bank in Omaha, and then moved to Kearney to a position with the Nebraska State Banking Department as an examiner; after retiring, took on the custodial duties at First Lutheran Church for 15 years
Activities: enjoyed following sports of all kinds, supporting of Storm hockey, any outdoor activity involving his home, traveling and, most importantly, spending time with his grandkids

After his father’s death when John was 5, family moved a number of times, finally settled in Holdrege; graduated from Holdrege High School in 1951; attended Kearney State College and Hays (Kan.) State College
Military: joined Army ROTC at age 17, while in high school; spent two years of active duty in Germany and was a sergeant in the Medical Corps attached to the 182nd Field Artillery Battalion and the 72nd Field Artillery Search Light Battalion; spent a total of eight years in the military, the last few stateside in the Nebraska National Guard; was honorably discharged in September 1957; was very proud of this service to his country
Began in radio at his hometown radio station, KUVR in Holdrege; was a news writer for the new TV station, KHOL-TV, located between Holdrege and Kearney; worked for Bill Whitlock from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s; moved to KGFW in Kearney and signed on with Mitchell Broadcasting Co., now known as NRG Media
In Kearney, served on various boards and committees having to do with the city of Kearney and St. James Catholic Church; was involved on a state and national level with broadcasting associations; spent seven years on the Board of Directors of the radio and broadcasting division of The Associated Press; retired from radio Oct. 9, 2009, after more than five decades and working from Virginia to Idaho, but spending more than 25 years at KQSK-KCNB and Eagle communications in Chadron
Married: 1958, to Neva Hrabe in Hays; together had a daughter
Married: 1969, to Frances Reeh; together had a son and a daughter
