Worked for the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department for 18 years, retired in 1991

ADDENDENUM:
A farmer/rancher from Ravenna who died in a 2016 traffic accident has left $4 million to be divided between the Kearney Area Community Foundation and Grand Island Community Foundation. The organizations announced Monday that they are the beneficiaries of the gifts of $2 million apiece from Arthur E. Klinkacek’s estate. Both foundations are creating charitable funds to be used for scholarships for area youths, as well as community preservation and enrichment purposes, in honor of Klinkacek’s wishes to help communities and youth in Buffalo and Hall counties for years to come.
“We are thrilled to be the beneficiary of such a generous gift from Mr. Klinkacek,” said Judi Sickler, president and CEO of the Kearney Area Community Foundation. “We are humbled by his generous gift to enrich lives of people in central Nebraska. What a wonderful legacy!”
Melissa DeLaet, CEO of the Grand Island Community Foundation, said, “This gift will make a huge impact on area communities and youth now and in the future. We are honored to be stewards of this amazing donation by Mr. Klinkacek and are excited to see the lives it will touch.”

Military: stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, La.; After discharge, returned to Nebraska and Kearney State College, earned his Bachelor of Science in math education in 1973; worked nights at the Youth Development Center and attended classes during the morning
Lived in Ravenna, taught at Ravenna Junior High through the mid-1980s and also coached volleyball and basketball; coached girls’ softball during summers; worked for Cords Construction; later taught at Barr Junior High in Grand Island, retired in 2005; in retirement, drove trucks for Gressley and then Loeffelholz
Activities: enjoyed participating in sports, and also enjoyed officiating in football, basketball and baseball; active member of the Ravenna Golf Club

Grew up on a farm southeast of Pleasanton; attended Sunflower rural school; summers from 1943 to 1945, took a train from Ravenna to Alliance to work in the wheat fields during harvest time; graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1946
After graduation, worked at Wind and Power Manufacturing company in Newton, Iowa, and then at a filling station in Alliance; then worked heavy equipment on bridge crews on levee construction on the Missouri River and helping construct Highway 10 south of Pleasanton; when heavy rains caused a stop in construction, helped tear out the abandoned railroad track from Boelus to Pleasanton
Military: U.S. Army, Jan. 5, 1951- Dec. 1952; was shipped to Japan and then to Inchon, Korea; was in an engineering division running heavy equipment for landing pads for MASH units and moved equipment to where it was needed; helped construct a prisoner exchange unit; returned to the US involved sailing from Pushon, Korea, to Sasebo, Japan, with 30 days on the ocean, then on train from Oakland, Calif. to Camp Carson, Colo., which was his point of discharge
In March 1953, began working for Buffalo County running a road grader
Married: Sept. 14, 1953, to Dorothy Goc in Grand Island; she died in December 1987
After marriage, lived in a trailer home at his parents’ farm for several years, then moved and farmed one mile from the family farm; eventually purchased his parents' farm; moved to Ravenna in 1977, worked for the International dealership; later purchased a gravel truck and hauled gravel for Buffalo County and private individuals
Married June Tesmer in January 1989; she passed away on June 14, 2013
Activities: served on the Ravenna city council, was elected as mayor of Ravenna, 1994; other jobs included relief driver for Ravenna Sanitation, mowing for Ravenna Schools, spraying musk thistles at the Hazard farm, clearing the pastures of dead wood, destroying volunteer cedar trees in the pasture, fixing fence, repairing terraces and building small dams, etc.; enjoyed traveling, casinos, gardening, yard work, dirtwork on skid steer, horses and spending time with his extended family

Grew up in Kearney; graduated from Dartmouth College in 1954, earned a master’s degree from Columbia Journalism School and studied for his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado
During his early career as a journalist, covered politics and elections for The Associated Press and for radio and television in Omaha; was a campaign finance and lobby reporter for Roll Call Report Syndicate, and was news editor and book review editor for the Rocky Mountain News, a Denver, Scripps-Howard Syndicate; besides journalism (focusing on politics), also worked in government public information and private-sector public relations; also worked on Capitol Hill on the Senate and House sides, with both individuals and committees; in later years was a senior press officer for FEMA; retired in 2006; lived in Arlington for 35 years
In retirement, was invited to be a foreign election observer; spent time in Serbia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine during the Orange Revolution; also traveled to many parts of the world with his wife, Crista
Activities: acted in professional and community theater and performed in both musical and dramatic roles; member of the Denver Press Club, The National Press Club and the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C.

Worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a machinist apprentice

Entered the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1957, and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree; was accepted into the Sigma Tau Engineering Honorary and was awarded the student medal for academic excellence
Married: 1960 to Marlys Nelson; she died in 1972
After graduation, moved to Kearney, worked with the Helleberg & Helleberg architectural firm; passed the architectural license exam and, in 1970, became a partner and principal in the firm of Great Plains Engineering and Architecture; joined the firm of Miller & Associates, 2000; during his 50 years of architectural practice, was responsible for the design of numerous projects in Nebraska as well as the states of Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois
Married: 1977 to Peggy (Janitscheck) Criffield; raised their blended family together
Activities: was active in many civic and professional organizations, including serving as president of the Nebraska Society of Architects, Kearney Chamber of Commerce and West Central Nebraska Home Builders Association; enjoyed sports and remained active throughout his life and especially enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of the NBA (Noon Basketball Association); received adult baptism at First Lutheran Church in North Platte; was an active member of New Life Assembly of Kearney, had taught Sunday school classes, led small groups, participated in various drama productions and missions projects and had served on the church board; was a loving husband, father and grandfather who tried to instill in his children a love for God and the conservative values of hard work and thrift that he learned while growing up in the years following the Great Depression

Worked as superintendent with CPI at the time of his death; previously worked at Baldwins Manufacturing in Kearney for some 12 years as warehouse supervisor
Survivors include: wife, Allison Weston of Kearney; children, Khloe of the home and twins Michaela S. and Melissa L. of Kearney; parents, Tom and Linda Sue Weston of Nebraska City; siblings and spouses, Michele and Stan Lundgren of Kearney, Kim and Shad Stutheit of Waverly, Marcie and Brian Swoyer of Lawrence, Kan., Aaron and Cara Weston of Overland Park, Kan., Nate and Stacy Weston of Omaha and Tyler Weston of Lincoln; paternal grandmother, Gladys Weston of Nehawka; parents-in-law, Larry and Myrna Johnson of Kearney; sister-in-law, Jennifer and husband Dan Pittner of Minden; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends
Was preceded in death by his paternal grandpa, Edward Weston in 1999; maternal grandpa, Leonard Schreiter in 1991; and maternal grandma, Della Schreiter in 2006
