Married: Maxine Wiese; had two children together; later divorced
Had several career moves, was in management for Foley’s Department Stores, then opened a small pet store in downtown Houston, which soon became the world’s largest pet store encompassing an entire city block; traveled to 29 countries finding exotic birds and animals for the store; also gave lectures at pet-related seminars and conventions
Retired and returned to Kearney, bought a house with an apartment near the University of Nebraska at Kearney; enjoyed working with the college students and helping them find housing, bought several more rental properties; offered a scholarship to UNK students who were living in his apartments, in the form of a free month’s rent if they got on the dean’s list; over the years, befriended and helped a diverse mixture of interesting people

After graduation, moved to Kearney, Nebr., was basic skills coordinator at Mid-Nebraska Mental Retardation Services in Kearney; began her 40-year teaching career as a teacher at Kearney Junior High School; eventually transferred to Kearney High School and taught English
Married: July 25, 1981, to Gerald Hunnicutt
Won numerous awards for excellence in teaching; was given the prestigious Teachers Presidential Scholarship Award in Washington, D.C., and also was selected as Teacher of the Year by the Kearney Public Schools Foundation; was a member of and served as vice president and president of Alpha Delta Kappa, and was head of the scholarship committee; took students to England; traveled to Romania to adopt a daughter
Activities: enjoyed restoring old houses with her husband was a secondary passion that took them through several interesting projects that proved to be both fun and challenging; loved books and researched many materials to fulfill her understanding of academics and the nature of life itself. She was firm in her religious beliefs and respected the fallibility of human life and redemption of it to its greatest potential. Married: Mike Jackson on April 12, 1970; later divorced
Was a devoted and loving mother and stayed home with her daughters; after daughters were out of elementary school, began working part time at The Ravenna News in the 1980s as a typesetter, worked her way up to office manager and later to editor and part owner; won many Nebraska Press Association awards through the years
Activities: was devoted to her church and community; attended the monthly school board and City Council meetings, covering everything she could in a fair and accurate way for her newspaper; helped promote the businesses, sporting events, school functions, various benefits and fundraisers in Ravenna; was a member of many community organizations, including the Ravenna Community Foundation, Ravenna Economic Development Corp. and Ravenna Chamber of Commerce

After marriage, lived in various communities, including Stratton, Culbertson and Crete and Columbia, Mo., then settled in Kearney in 1985; worked for various seed companies in seed sales and as a brick salesman in central-western Nebraska
Activities: enjoyed his morning coffee group, Nebraska high school sports and Husker football; was an avid car enthusiast and loved to drive around in his convertible
Survivors include his wife, Judy of Kearney; son, Bret and wife Brandy Zapp and their children, Mason Michael and Mallorie Jean, of La Vista; daughter, Bobbi and husband Leif Ullman and their children, Liam Micah, Grace Ann and Eve Elaine, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers and spouses, Tom and Mary Zapp of Higginsville, Mo., Jerry and B’Anne Zapp of Kearney and Ted and Velora Zapp of Culbertson; sisters and spouses, Pat and Ty Wagner of Culbertson and Jane and Lee Gilliam of Oberlin, Kan.; sister-in-law, Janice and husband Rex Hanna of Cambridge; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and family friends
Was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and in-laws, Bernard “Rusty” and Elaine Schilz
