Anderson Co. and Associates, a manufacturing rep business, which is still operational today; received several top salesman awards from companies he represented; retired and moved to Florida
In retirement, worked at Walt Disney World, worked the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, also wrapped cookies for the Grand Floridian Resort’s gingerbread house for several years
Activities: enjoyed golf, fishing, carpentry and traveling around exploring and making new friends in their motor home with LaDonna; was a lifetime member of the Shriners, a Mason and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion
Survivors include: three children, Pat Anderson, Doug Anderson and Perry Anderson; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ronnie Anderson

Taught school in Silver Creek and Columbus; later received her pharmacy degree from Southwest Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla.
Worked as a pharmacist in Newton, Eldorado and Wichita, Kan.; retired in 2005; moved to Grand Island, 2006
Activities: in Grand Island, attended the Evangelical Free Church and volunteered with the Grand Island Literacy Council; enjoyed singing, going to movies, dining out, Husker sports and her cat
Survivors include: brother and sister-in-law, Wain and Dixie Codner of Grand Island; niece, Melissa Codner of Roscoe, Mont.; and many friends
Was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew, Kyle Codner

DAWSON, George W., January 6, 1863 - November 9, 1949 George W. Dawson, 86, an early settler in this community, died after a lingering illness. He had been failing in health for a number of years and in recent months his condition had been serious. It became critical last week when he suffered two heart attacks.
He was born on Jan 6, 1863 in Newport, IN. He is the son of Charles and Elizabeth Digby Dawson. He lived in Illinois before coming to Nebraska in 1885. On March 13, 1904, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Walker of Shelton and to this union were five children. One son, Joseph Walker died in infancy, four daughters, Idamae, Birdella (Birdie), Dorothy, and Georgia (June). Mr. Dawson was engaged in farming two miles south of Shelton until 1940 when he retired and moved to town. He was a member of the I.O.O. F. Lodge and his greatest hobby was fishing. Mr. Dawson was a member of the Methodist church and when a young man he sang in the choir for many years. He was active in the affairs of the church until failing health prevented his regular attendance.
Survivors are his wife and four daughters: Idamae (Archie) Morley of Battle Ground, WA. Birdie (Rodney) Stevens, Shelton, NE; Dorothy (Albert) Wagner of Angwin, CA. and Georgia “June” (Jack) Hellander of Denver, CO. Idamae Morley was in ill health an unable to attend the funeral of her father
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dale Westadt at the Methodist church. The pallbearers were: J.F. McRoberts, R.R. Matheson, Sr., Monseur Badway, Victor Mortensen, Jay Mays, and W. H. Shafer. Interment was made in the Shelton cemetery and the I.O.O.F. Lodge of which he was a member, had charge of the services at the grave

DAWSON, Sylvia Walker, March 13, 1873 - August 3, 1956
Mrs. Sylvia Dawson, 83, passed away at the Lacey Rest Home early Friday morning. She had been failing in health for several years and when the hour of death came she passed peacefully away
Sylvia Myrtle Walker, the oldest daughter of Jasper F. and Joann (McCord) Walker, was born on her parents’ homestead 2 ½ miles east of Shelton, March 13, 1873, on the farm now occupied by Rose Mattison. Her age was 83 years, 5 months and 20 days
Her whole life was spent in and near Shelton having grown to womanhood in this community. On March 13, 1904, she was united in marriage to George W. Dawson, who preceded her in death on November 9, 1949. She attended Wesleyan College in Lincoln and taught in rural schools near Shelton.
She is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Idamae Morley, Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Birdella Stevens, Shelton, Nebraska; Mrs. Dorothy Wagner, Sacramento, California; Mrs. Georgia Hellander, Minneapolis, Minnesota; eight grandchildren: Harold Morley and Helen Morley-Fried; Marilynn, Marjorie, Dick and Bob Stevens, Ed and Carol Wagner; three great grandchildren: Steve and Linda Morley and Karen Fried.
She will not only be missed by members of the family but by a host of friends
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Monday afternoon, Rev. Kruse officiating and Rev. Massie assisting. Mrs. Galen Evans and Mrs. Howard Peck sang “Lily of the Valley” and “God Be With You,” accompanied by Mrs. Fred Schroeder. Burial was in the Shelton Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Donald Walker, Raymond Watson, Dudley Stubblefield, Henry Wendling, Floyd Smith and Clarence Ellis.

Activities: member of First Lutheran Church; she and Lyle were rarely apart; especially enjoyed attending the activities of children, grand- and great-grandchildren; also enjoyced socializing at Peterson Senior Activity Center, gardening, sewing and baking her famous chocolate chip cookies

Activities: enjoyed riding horses with his daughter Brit, hunting and calling coyotes with his buddies in the woods; loved being out in nature, loved camping and the outdoors; cherished his family and friends; had a strong faith, looked forward to sponsoring Christian Student Fellowship on the spring break trip; was a problem solver, and anyone could come to him day or night for him to just sit and talk through their problems; was always eager to help

MUNDLE, Mrs. Maria Elizabeth (Lowell), Nov 27, 1858 – Apr 7, 1954
Maria Elizabeth Lowell was born to Luther Keith and Sarah Jane Lowell Nov. 27, 1858 in Washburn, WI and passed away at her daughter’s home in Shelton on April 7 at the age of 95.
She came to this community in 1872 with her parent’s family who came to join the Soldier’s Free Homestead Colony which came here the previous year. The family came here in a covered wagon driving their stock ahead of them. The first winter was spent southwest of Shelton. The following spring the family moved northwest of Shelton on their own homestead. While living there, she attended school in District No. 8.
On Oct. 3, 1876 she was married to Thomas Edward Mundle who had come here from Prescott, Ontario, Canada. The first home of the couple was a sod house north of Shelton in the Sodtown community. Five children were born to this union. The two sons, Luther L and Wilson E preceded her in death. From Sodtown the family moved to Shelton for a four or five year stay. Following this, they lived on a farm south of Gibbon. From there the family moved to Idaho where they stayed for quite some time and where Mr. Mundle passed away in 1916. From 1916 on she made her home with children until her death.
She joined the Methodist Church at the age of 14 and was a member of the same for the remaining 81 years of her life. The first church services she attended were held in the homes until they finally built a meeting house. She was very active I the church all her life, teaching the Sunday school classes in both Gibbon and Shelton for many years. In addition to her church work, she also took an active part in finding homes for homeless children for a state agency.
Her mind was clear and very active until the last. Those who came to see her were told many interesting stories of the earlier life in the Shelton community. There was no question in the minds of those who knew her regarding the good influence she had over the lives of the people who lived with her in the early days.
Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Harris of Riddle Oregon; Mrs. Agnes Walker of Shelton and Mrs. Jessie Osborne of Eugene, Oregon. Also surviving are a brother, 91 year-old O. E. Lowell of Gibbon, NE. and ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Activities: was a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, noble grand of Rebekah’s, president of the Shelton American Legion Auxiliary, secretary of the UMC Women’s Society, volunteer at the Grand Island veterans hospital and vice-president of Faith Circle at Shelton UMC; loved to dance, play cards, fish, read and travel; most of all, cherished her family and many friends
Survivors include: her daughters and their spouses, Edith and Darwin Wicht of Grand Island and Diana and Clyde Frank of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild

Mrs. John Spahr, 31 died of pneumonia in a Kearney hospital about 3 o’clock Friday morning following a brief illness. She was taken to the hospital Thursday and news of her death was a shock to relatives and friends here.
Marjorie Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Walker, was born on a farm a few miles southeast of Shelton Feb. 5, 1911. She grew to young womanhood here, graduated from Shelton high school with the class of 1929 and on Aug. 24, 1932, was married to John Spahr. They lived on a farm in Cherry Creek Township about 15 miles northwest of Shelton until 1937 when they moved to Kearney and had since made their home there. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Besides her bereaved husband, she is survived a son, Kenneth 9 and a daughter, Elaine, 2. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Agnes Walker, an her grandmother, Mrs. Libbie Mundel, both of Shelton; one sister, Mrs. Ilo Spahr, Los Angeles, Calif., and a brother, Donald Walker, Washington, R.I.
The body was brought to Shelton Friday morning and taken to the Amos funeral home to await funeral and burial arrangements. Funeral rites were held at the Shelton Methodist Church Monday at 2:30pm with Rev. E. C. Staley pastor in charge. Singers were Mrs. W. E. Amos and Mrs. J. I Stock and the accompanist was Mrs. H. A. Pickering.
Interment was made in the Shelton cemetery and casket bearers were Raymond Watson, Fred Schroeder, Roy Schroeder, Marvin Helser, Herman Link and Merl Urwiller. There were many beautiful floral tributes, attending to the high esteem in which Mrs. Spahr was held by friends in the communities where she had lived. Relatives in attendance at the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Ben Spahr; Portland, OR. Mr. and Mrs. Ilo Spahr, Los Angeles, CA. and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Walker, Washington, RI.

Services for Rodney N. Stevens, 79, of Shelton who died Saturday, Feb 25, 1989, at a Grand Island hospital will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shelton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Shelton Cemetery.

Stevens was born June 12, 1909, at Polk to Jamier and Signe (Norman) Stevens. At an early age, he moved with his family to Garden County. He graduated from Goodview High School. On March 8, 1938, he married Birdella Dawson at Shelton. They lived in Western Nebraska and Colorado where Stevens raised wheat and cattle. They later moved to Shelton. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Polk.
Survivors include his wife of Shelton; daughters, Marilynn Eickhoff of Omaha and Marjorie Carpenter of Overland Park, KS; sons, Robert of Omaha and Richard of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and an infant son.

Daisy was born on March 4, 1877 on a farm near Shelton, NE.
She is the daughter of Jasper & Joanna Walker.
On Mar. 22, 1899, she was united in marriage to Edward L. Stubblefield.
They lived in the community north of Shelton for a number of years, later moving to a farm southwest of town.
She is survived by her husband, a son and three daughters: Dudley Stubblefield, Myrtle V., Mrs. Elma Watson and Lenora M., all of Shelton.
Services were conducted at the Methodist Church and burial was in the Shelton Cemetery.

STUBBLEFIELD, Edward L., 75, a well-known farmer of this community for more than a half century, died at his home five and a half miles southwest of Shelton, last Thursday at 5:40 pm following an illness of one month
Born at Hopeville, Clark county, IA, Mar 3, 1865, he came to Nebraska in the 80’s when a young man and with the exception of a year spent in Kansas had resided here continuously. On Mar. 22, 1899, he was united in marriage to Daisy E. Walker. They lived in the community north of Shelton for a number of years, later moving to a farm southwest of town which had been the family home for a long time
Mrs. Stubblefield died Oct 5, 1935. He is survived by a son and three daughters: Dudley Stubblefield, Myrtle V., Mrs. Elma Watson and Lenora M., all of Shelton. He leaves two grandsons and two granddaughters; two brothers and a sister, R.N. Stubblefield and Mrs. Nancy Boltin of Shelton and Frank S Stubblefield, Stanford, IL.
Mr. Stubblefield never aspired to public office and devoted practically all his time to farming interests. He had been numbered among the sugar beet growers of this area over a long period of years. At the time of his death he was one of the oldest members of the Shelton Methodist church where he attended services.
Last rites in charge of Rev. Arthur L. Embree were conducted at the Methodist church Sunday at 2:30 pm. Mrs. W. E. Amos, Mrs. J. I. Stock, V. S. Pierce and C. R. Collis sang: “Now the Day is Over” and “Lead Kindly Light” with Mrs. Gerald Stock at the piano.
Interment was made in the family lot in the Shelton cemetery.

WALKER, Agnes J. Mundle, 72, a resident of the Shelton community, died early on Jul 23, 1956 at the Good Samaritan Hospital following a heart attack at her home Sunday evening; had been in poor health since a previous heart attack last October

Was preceded in death by her husband on February 27, 1934 and by a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Spahr on December 3, 1942
She is survived by Donald of Shelton and Mrs. JoAnna Spahr of Venice, CA. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Allen Osborne, five grandchildren, Don, Lynn, Wilma, Kenneth, Elaine Spahr.
Joining with her family in their sorrow are many friends and neighbors who will cherish her memory.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Shelton on Wednesday. Rev. Lowen Kruse officiated.

WALKER, Eliza, Oct 8, 1821 - Aug 17, 1901
Mrs. Eliza Walker, 80, one of the pioneers of this part of Nebraska, died at the home of her son, D. C. Walker last Saturday morning at 10:15.
Mrs. Walker came to Shelton in the spring of 1878. She purchased a quarter section of land adjoining the village on the south, where she settled and where she resided with her son at the time of her death. She was born in North Adams, Vermont, on October 8, 1821. When she was but a small child her parents removed to the state of New York on the shores of Lake George, where she spent her early girlhood. When she had reached the age of fifteen her parents emigrated west and settled in Hancock County, Indiana, her father entering, as it was then called, 240 acres of land only a few miles from the town of Greenfield. When the deceased was about eighteen years of age she met and formed the acquaintance of Wiley Walker, a young man who had come to Indiana from North Carolina with his parents, they having left there on account of their antipathy to slavery. The acquaintance formed, grew and finally ripened into an attachment which ended in their being united in marriage in 1841, the union resulting in the birth of seven sons and two daughters. The husband died in 1862.
The eldest son, Francis M. resided in Kearney for several years, where he died in 1893. The two daughters, Mrs. Rufus Mitchell and Mrs. E.O. Elliott, both died in Shelton, the latter in 1896 and the former in 1899.
One son, Julian, lives in Indiana and one, S.M., in Missouri. N.P. is in Cheyenne, Wyoming, while the others, D.C.; L.L. and J.F., reside in Shelton. Mrs. Walker had been an intense sufferer for several years. On her seventy-fourth birthday she was stricken with paralysis and then it was thought that death would soon relieve her of her suffering, but she rallied and survived for nearly six years. The deceased was a member of the M. E. Church for fifty three years and lived a conscientious faithful Christian life.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. James Leonard, and were largely attended.

WALKER, Harlan Page, Born: Oct. 11, 1864, Allegheny County, PA.; Died: Sep. 13, 1920, Shelton, Buffalo County, NE.
Harlan Page Walker, 55, was born on October 11, 1864 at Noble’s Town, PA. His parents are Gabriel & Lavina Walker. He moved to the Shelton vicinity in 1887 where he engaged in farming. On February 5, 1891 he was united in marriage with Miss Maud Mitchell of this community. To this union three children were born: Lola, Bernice and Clifton.
The first years of his married life was spent in the Shelton community. At the end of that period he moved with his family to Illinois.Ten years later his wife and children moved back into their old home in Shelton and Mr. Walker remaining in Illinois until one year previous to his tragic death.
He leaves to mourn his untimely death his wife, Mrs. Maud Walker, two daughters Mrs. Lola Smith and Miss Bernice Walker and one son Clifton Walker, his mother, Levine Walker and his brother, Newton Walker of McDonald, Pa. and a brother, Dr. W. J. Walker of Pittsburgh, Pa.

WALKER, Jasper F., September 13, 1847 - May 26, 1917; Summoned By Death; Pioneer Citizen Answers Final Call -- Funeral Held Monday Afternoon.
Once more the community has been called upon to part with one of its earliest settlers and prominent citizens in the person of Jasper F. Walker, who died at his home in this city Saturday evening shortly before seven o’clock, after an illness of about two weeks with asthma and other complications incentive to his advanced age, Mr. Walker has been failing in health for more than two years, but only recently that his condition became serious, and for several days before death overtook him little hopes were entertained for his recovery.
Jasper F. Walker was born in Hancock County, Indiana, September 13, 1847, being 69 years, 8 months and 13 days of age at the time of his death. His boyhood and early manhood days were spent in Indiana, in which state he was united in marriage March 9, 1870 to Miss Joanna McCord. He received his education at the Battleground Collegiate Institute at Battleground, Indiana, and a town which had grown up on the site of the battle of Tippecanoe. For some time he engaged in teaching school in Indiana, and later in Nebraska.
In the year 1870, shortly after they were married, Mr. & Mrs. Walker came to Nebraska and settled on a homestead in Hall County, southeast of Shelton where they resided until 1880 when they moved to town. Since that time Mr. Walker has been a resident of Shelton and has been identified with the up-building of the town and community for many years. About twenty-five years ago he took up the practice of law and was successful in that vocation.
Mr. Walker served on the village board of trustees for a number of years and has held other public offices in the community. He was a member of the A.O.U.W and since 1897 had belonged to the Loyal Mystic Legion. He was always actively interested in and closely identified with every movement advanced for the betterment of humanity. When but sixteen years of age he joined the Indians Legion, which was a military organization formed subsequent to Morgan’s raid of Indiana, for the purpose of preventing a repetition of the raid.
In the passing of Mr. Walker, Shelton and community suffer a distinct loss. He was converted, baptized and joined the Methodist church when he was nineteen years of age and remained a loyal and active member until his translation to the church triumphant. He became identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Shelton September 2, 1888, under the pastorate of Rev. C. A. Mastin. The members of the church were greatly bereaved in the passing of one whose voice has been hard in its councils for more than twenty-eight years.
Besides his life companion, Mr. Walker leaves to mourn, two daughters, Sylvia Myrtle, (Mrs. George W. Dawson); and Daisy E., (Mrs. E. L. Stubblefield), and one son, Jesse C., all of Shelton; three brothers, Sidney Morton and Darwin Cooley of Tacoma, Washington and Lucian Larabee of North Platte, Nebraska. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist E. Church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock and were conducted by Rev. F. A. Shawkey, the pastor.
Interment was made in the Shelton Cemetery.

Jesse is the son of Jasper F. & Joanna McCord Walker.
He was born on Jul 19, 1881 on a farm near Shelton, NE.
On April 25, 1906 he was united in marriage to Agnes J. Mundle.
They lived on the family farm and to this union three children were born, one son, Donald and two daughters, JoAnna and Marjorie. Later they moved to Shelton. Jesse was a farmer and farmed the Walker homestead
Jesse is survived by his wife and three children: Donald J. Walker, Marjorie (Walker) Spahr and JoAnna (Walker) Spahr. He is also survived by two sisters; Sylvia (Walker) Dawson and Daisy (Walker) Stubblefield

WALKER, Joanna -- born Oct 10, 1849 – died: May 14, 1940; Pioneer Woman Dies Early Friday -- Last Rites Held Sunday Afternoon in Shelton Methodist Church
Mrs. J. F. (Joanna) Walker, 90, who came to Nebraska as a bride in 1870, and had lived in this community more than 70 years, died at 6 o’clock Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. W. Dawson. Despite her advanced age Mrs. Walker’s memory was good and her mind bright and clear until the last.
Death finally relieved her suffering following a lingering illness. Since Christmas her condition had been critical, and for a great many weeks the end was momentarily expected.
Joann McCord, a daughter of Elias and Eliza (Newkirk) McCord, was born Oct 10, 1849, in Hancock county, Ind., near Indianapolis. Her grandparents on both sides settled there when the country was new. Her father helped to build the first house in Indianapolis. He also built a large frame house on his farm when she was too young to remember. It was constructed out of timber grown there and it still stands in perfection condition.
On March 9, 1870, she was united in marriage to Jasper F. Walker, also a native of Indiana. The same year they came to Nebraska, locating on a homestead two miles east of Shelton Mr. Walker helped to build No. 9 school house in Hall County and was its first teacher.
A few years later the family moved to their farm south of Shelton, on Grand Island. In 1889 they moved to town and Mr. Walker engaged in the practice of law here following that vocation for many years. He died in Shelton on May 26, 1917.
When Mrs. Walker first came here in 1870 the Platte valley was a vast stretch of unbroken prairie, and was inhabited by bands of Indians. In recent years when recalling those early days, she told of being afraid of the Indians and the wind. She knew what hardships and privation meant, lived here when the county was new and undeveloped, and experienced many of the trials know only to pioneers.
She was a member of the Christian church while a girl in Indiana and after coming to Shelton united with the Methodist church, for many years being one of its loyal and faithful members. Always devoted to her home and family, Mrs. Walker was a woman who processed a fine Christian character, and was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends.
Mrs. Walker was the mother of three children. One daughter, Mrs. E. L. Stubblefield, one son, Jesse C. Walker, and four great grandchildren preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. G. W. Dawson, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at two o’clock, with Rev. A. L. Embree officiating. Mrs. Wilmetta Marks Wheeler sang: “Give Me The Wings of Faith,” and “The Land of Beulah”.
Interment was in the family lot in Shelton cemetery. Serving as pallbears were: W. D. Campbell, L.F. Haug, E.L. Templin, San Spahr, Ralph Soderstrom and Floyd Smith.
