Was a farm wife, worked countless hours on the farm raising cattle and hogs along with gardening and cooking for many; later worked a variety of jobs that included the Ramada Inn, Pleasanton Livestock, Goodwill Industries and also Hobby Lobby
Activities: longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pleasanton; loved being able to give to others whether it be vegetables from her garden or some sort of baked goods

Activities: was actively involved in the Evangelical Free Church in Sumner, which later became the United Church of Sumner; taught Sunday school and Bible school, was active in a group called the “Bereans;” was a lovely seamstress and knitted, crocheted and embroidered nearly 70 pairs of beautiful pillowcases; spent the last year and one-half at St. Luke’s Good Samaritan Home

Parents: Eva (Patterson) Christensen and Leo M. Christensen
Had most of her education in the public schools in Lincoln, Neb., and attended the University of Nebraska (Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees) and the University of Wisconsin (Ph.D. degree)
Joined the University of Wyoming faculty of botany as a mycologist in 1963, remained there as a teacher and investigator until her retirement in 1989 to care for her ailing mother in Laramie and in Miller, Neb., her ancestral home; returned to Madison after her mother’s death in 1999
Studied the ecology of the soil microfungi, the source of antibiotics; examined relationships within soil microfungal communities, and variations in those communities in different types of soils and in different kinds of plant communities, finding many new species; published more than 60 major research papers and served as mentor for 25 graduate students in mycology; collected soil samples for analysis from more than 100 native plant communities (deserts, grasslands, bogs, forests and tundra) in the United States, Europe and Africa; reviewed papers for professional journals in botany and mycology, and reviewed grant proposals for the National Science Foundation, the National Park Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Energy; held several offices in the Mycological Society of America; was awarded many honors for her work
Activities: enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and birdwatching not only in Wyoming and Wisconsin but also in Africa, South America, Australia and Europe; played violin, enjoyed classical music, especially chamber music and opera; in Madison, worked actively in SAIL (Sharing Active Independent Lives), a volunteer organization that serves the needs of the independent elderly

Married: Feb. 27, 1980, Della (Shirley) Gilmore in Julesburg, Colo.; gained seven children
Activities: member of the Wellfleet United Methodist Church, volunteer fireman and first responder, a member of the North Platte Elks Club, North Platte Eagles, North Platte American Legion Club and German American Club; founding member of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse; was instrumental in starting the annual Pleasanton Rodeo; was a caretaker in his family; laid carpet for many families; enjoyed traveling summers in a camper to the Black Hills and California, and the Labor Day tradition of camping in Pleasanton at the affectionately known “Cottonwood Hilton” along the South Loup River; traveled to Canada to fish and Germany and Hawaii to visit his son and family

With twin sister, Avis, was delivered by their Grandpa Hermann (Reiter), as the doctor had been delayed by an emergency. What a surprise for her mother and grandfather when not one, but two came along
Grew up in the Elm Creek area and graduated from Elm Creek High School; worked for various families during her high school years, helped with household chores and cared for their children
After high school, got a job as a nanny making $35 a month in Casper, Wyo., but was so homesick that she soon returned home; worked for Irene and Joe Meier from Elm Creek
Married: Russell “Rusty” Florell on Aug. 31, 1944, at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege; he died in 2013
After husband came home from the service in the U.S. Amy Air Corps during World War II, lived in the Wilcox area, farmed and raised livestock; in 1953, purchased a country filling station south of Elm Creek, known as Rusty’s Platte Service; the whole family contributed by changing oil, pumping gas, washing windows and making hamburgers; also had a tank wagon business, and mom cooked for the hired men who worked for their corn shelling business
Activities: active member of Holcomb Evangelical Free Church, taught Sunday school and Bible school, was being active in WMS; accepted Christ as her personal savior; was thrilled to be a part of the Hero Flight to Washington, D.C., to honor the WWII veterans
Survivors include: her sons, Eugene Florell and wife Barbara, Arlin Florell and wife Sally, and Kelly Florell and wife Robin, all of Elm Creek; a daughter, Shelley Miller and husband Larry of Kearney; 19 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Reiter and Irene Florell

Activities: member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elm Creek, the American Legion; was a great Elm Creek sports fan and served on the local honor guard. was an exceptional fast pitch softball pitcher in his younger days, even once struck out 21 batters in a row; enjoyed hunting, dancing, four wheeler rides with his grandsons, visiting with people and telling jokes; also enjoyed traveling and attending his grandsons school and sporting events; held a very special place in his heart for his three grandsons and was extremely proud of all their accomplishments and the fine young men they have become

Survivors include: her loving husband of 58 years, Bob Vogt of Kearney; a daughter, Robbie Samuelson and husband Doug of Kearney; a son, Neal Vogt and wife Stacey of Lincoln; a grandson, Jared Samuelson and wife Angela of Kearney; a granddaughter, Jordan Noel Samuelson of Kearney; two brothers, Dale Smallcomb and wife Beverly of Tempe, Ariz., and her twin, Kent Smallcomb and wife Jo of Kearney; a sister-in-law, Glenda Smallcomb of Ukiah, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews
Was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nellie and Nelson Smallcomb and Oliver and Nellie Harris; her parents; and five brothers, Delwyn, Donald, David Dee, Oren and Darol
