When Burt’s mother died in 1940, the family moved to Florida during World War II when his father was drafted by the U.S. Army as a surgeon; in 1945, the family then settled in Kearney, Neb., where he attended high school
Earned his Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel Military College in South Carolina; received his Medical Doctorate degree from Vanderbilt University Medical School; did his surgical internship at the Chicago Research Hospital
Married: Evelyn “Evie” Holy on July 11, 1959, in East Grand Forks, Minn.
Continued his surgical residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s and Children’s Memorial Hospitals in Chicago
Military: U.S. Army from 1963-1965 as a surgeon at Kirk Army Hospital at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland
Began his career as a general surgeon in St. Cloud in 1965 and continued to care for and treat his patients for 28 years, retired in 1993; closed his private practice in St. Cloud, then joined the staff at Albany Medical Center, worked part time for 10 years; took great pride volunteering for 15 years in providing free medical care for Project H.E.A.L. with CentraCare at Catholic Charities
Activities: enjoyed sailing, pontooning and reading at the family cottage on Grand Lake; was a tremendous sports enthusiast; cherished his family above all else
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Evie of St. Cloud; children and their spouses, Cindy and Larry Brutger of St. Cloud and Rick and Dawn of Afton; grandchildren, Mathew and Michael Brutger and Gracie and Ruby Bancroft; and brothers, Dr. John Bancroft and Tom Candy, both of Kearney, and Al Candy of Lawton, Okla.

Married: Doretha Smith on Aug. 28, 1949, on her parents’ farm south of Gibbon
After marriage, lived near Shelton for 10 years, worked for local farmers; then worked for Fairmont Foods for nine years; opened Lakeview Café south of Gibbon in 1968; in 1972, left the café and purchased Gibbon Standard Oil Agency; over the years, expanded their business to what is now Clevenger Farm Products
Activities: member of Gibbon Baptist Church and a past member of the Gibbon Volunteer Fire Department for 19 years, and served on the Gibbon City Council; enjoyed hunting, golfing, bowling, playing cards and square dancing with his beloved wife; traveled extensively throughout the United States; especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends; Bob and Doretha celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Aug. 28, 2016

Was active in The Arc of Buffalo County, Kearney Little League Challenger Baseball Program and TOPSoccer; was a Make-A-Wish kid, an inspiration for the Inclusive Playground at Harmon Park and was recently invited to attend the Disability Pride Day celebration at the State Capitol to advocate for special-needs causes; had many friends with special needs across the state including his “Sand Bed Buddies” of Children’s Hospital; will be remembered for his smile, laugh and expressive eyes; loved superheroes, spending time with his family and taking walks in the neighborhood with his special caregivers; loved the sounds of his siblings’ voices, crinkled paper, baby giggles, fish kisses and whistling

Worked as a sales clerk in Ravenna for 25 years
Activities: active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, was a volunteer at the Ravenna Good Samaritan Center; enjoyed traveling, dancing, bowling, fishing, hunting, gardening, flowers and playing cards with her friends; loved time spent with her children and grandchildren; enjoyed nature, always pointing out the beauty of trees, clouds and flowers

Activities: enjoyed traveling and visited every state except Alaska; also toured nine European countries, one of the highlights of her life; active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir, helped assemble bulletins and church materials for many years and was a member of Trinity’s Quilting Society, helping make thousands of quilts for those in need; her hobbies included arts and crafts, crocheting, needlework, quilling, basketry, playing cards and working crossword puzzles; loved to laugh and tell jokes

Activities: was a hands-on dad, and enjoyed grandparenting even more than parenting and loved spending time with the grandkids; kept busy working on various projects, was an excellent woodworker and general fix-it man; was passionate about fishing and hunting; his fried fish, deer breakfast sausage and Christmas Eve prime rib are legendary; was a founding member of the Sons of the American Legion in Gibbon and was instrumental in putting together care packages to be shipped to the troops; helped organize many SAL fundraisers and served on the color guard

Born: July 25, 1963, in Wichita, Kan.

Restored a 1969 GTO Judge as a show car and went to several local shows and a national GTO club show in Denver; later sold the GTO to build a stock car for racing
On Aug. 31, 2002, was involved in an accident at Mid-Nebraska Speedway near Doniphan; car burst into flames, and he was burned over 75 percent of his body; spent 7½ months in the St. Elizabeth Hospital Burn Center in Lincoln; after several surgeries and skin grafts, had an infection settle on his aortic valve and had the valve replaced; later had a large cyst on his spleen; after 15 years the infection returned and again settled on the aortic valve
Because of his disabilities, worked part time at Cash-Wa and helped his dad mow yards in the afternoons

After marriage, lived in Kearney; worked at the Kearney Hub and then at Baldwin Manufacturing until she retired
Activities: member of First Christian Church in Kearney; loved her puppy and horses and had a passionate sweet tooth
Survivors include: numerous nieces and nephews
Was preceded in death by her husband in 2004; an infant daughter; and one sister
