MRS. RAVINA ERVIN

(Died March 8, 1899)

Deceased was born Oct. 9, 1815, in Blunt county, Tenn., and came to this precinct in 1858 with her husband, John Ervin, who died only three years ago at the age of 89. They were married in Ohio in 1836, and after coming to Nebraska they lived one year at what was at that time the town of Liberty northeast of here, spending their days since 1859 on the farm where they died.
Grandma Ervin, as she was familiarly called, had been in very poor health for some time, principally by reason of her advanced age, she being near 84 years old, and a few days ago an attack of grippe prostrated her and resulted in death at 8 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday, March 8. Mrs. Ervin was well known as a kind old lady whose many years in this vicinity had caused many people to honor and respect her, and no words of criticism are heard regarding the noble life of this venerable lady whose many years of joys and sorrows have ended. While in her girlhood she united with the Presbyterian Church, but later in life she became a convert to the faith of the church of Latter Day Saints.
The funeral service was conducted by Elder J. W. Waldsmith at the U.B. Church Thursday at 2 o'clock, and was attended by many friends who had known her so many years, and the remains were interred in the Union cemetery three miles northeast of town. She leaves four sons and five daughters, as follows: James, Milton and Orrin, live near Union, Jesse of Nebraska city, Mrs. Rachel Pell, Mrs. Ellen Trook and Mrs. Ruth Clarence, all living near Union, Mrs. Ravina Opp of Avoca, Neb., and Mrs. Marietta Ellsworth of Tecumseh, Neb.

GEORGE W. PELL: ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
(Died January 27, 1901)
George W. Pell was born July 11, 1842, in Surry county, NorthCarolina. Died at 11 o'clock p.m. Sunday, Jan 27, 1901, at his home near Union, Neb.
Deceased had been in poor health the past four years, but didnot appear to be seriously affected until about four weeks ago when hebegan to suffer much from kidney trouble - - Bright's disease. It was then too late for medical skill to combat the disease, and he gradually grew weaker until death came to his relief at the time stated. Thefuneral service was held at U.B. church at 11 o'clock Tuesday, conducted by Rev. H.F. Smith and a large number of neighbors and friends attended and listened to the solemn and impressive discourse, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery beside his brotherWilliam.
George W. Pell was one of the early settlers of this county, coming to Nebraska City with his father in 1853. In 1857 he came to this county and settled upon the place where he died. He was never married, but lived alone most of the time in a comfortable home on one of his farms. He was a very industrious man, strictly honest and honorable with his fellowmen and had accumulated considerable land and other property.
Mr. Pell had lived a Christian life, being a member of the M.E. church for more than thirty years, keeping his vows faithfully, attending regularly, and was for many years an active worker in the church and a teacher in Sunday School. He leaves one brother, Henry Pell of Union and two sisters, Mrs. L. G. True of Union and Mrs. Jesse Ervin of Nebraska City.
The brother and sisters join in expressing their thanks to themany friends for their kindness during the sickness of their brother.

The funeral service was held at 11 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday in the U.B. church near their home, conducted by Rev. Carter, after which the remains of little Sherman were laid torest in the Union cemetery.

HENRY T. PELL PASSED AWAY IN THIS VILLAGE ON LAST FRIDAY MORNING, FUNERAL SUNDAY
(Died December 30, 1910)
Born February 20, 1838, in Surry county, North Carolina.
Died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Dec 30, 1910 at his home in Union.
"Uncle Henry," as he was familiarly called, was one of Casscounty's best citizens, and his death is a matter of regret not only to the relatives but to all who had formed his acquaintance. His health has been failing somewhat for the past few years, but until about eight weeks ago he was able to be around and attend to light work. Eight weeks ago he become so feeble that it was necessary for him to abandon all work and since that time he was confined to his bed. The past two weeks of his illness he failed rapidly, and the relatives realized the approach of his death. The funeral services were held at 11 o'clock Sunday forenoon in the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. W. A. Taylor, and interment was made in the cemetery northeast of this village. The pall bearers were W. F. McCarroll, G. S. Upton, J. D. Bramblet, A. L.Becker, Henry Chilcot and George Everett.
Henry T. Pell came from the south in early manhood, and afterspending a few years in Fremont county, Iowa, he came to this county in 1854, being one of those who endured the hardships of pioneer days in Nebraska, and for some time he engaged in freighting across the plains at the time when white men were not safe from the hostile Indians.Later he established a home in this part of the county, and Aug. 13, 1863, he was married to Miss Rachel Ervin, who survives him, and they have ever since resided in and near this village. They were the parents of seven children, of whom two are deceased, those living being Alice, wife of Frank Hughson; Jesse L: Etta, wife of A.O. Pearsley; Lydia, wife of Edward Midkiff, and May, wife of John Niday, all of whom reside near this village. He leaves also two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Ervin of Nebraska City and Mrs. Lydia True of Coleridge, Nebraska.
All who know "Uncle Henry" can testify as to his value to thecommunity as a neighbor and good citizen, and one thing of which he was always proud was the fact that he could call everybody his friend. He was a worthy member of the United Brethren church, and in addition to being active in helping in a financial way he showed by his daily lifethat his religion was the kind that helps to make good citizenship.
