George W. WilliamsGeorge Williams died at Ansley, age 75 years, 11 months, 19 days. He was born at Covington, Fountain Co., Ind. on Sep. 28, 1846. He enlisted in the Civil War in Company D 1st Iowa Cavalry on Oct. 14, 1862, served until the end of the war, honorably discharged on Oct. 17, 1865, served 3 years and 3 days in defense of home and country. On Dec. 27, 1868 he married Margaret Batman, 8 children, 4 girls, 4 boys were born, 4 alive are William of Brownlee, George of Ashby, Mrs. Roy Jones and Mrs. Ed. Burton of near Ansley. His wife died in 1917. Children dead are Samuel, Ollie, Donald and Agnes. Came in the spring of 1883 to Nebraska and resided on homestead in Custer Co. until fall of 1916 when they moved to Ansley. Known to all as "Uncle George" he was a man of good humor. At Ansley he was elected commander of the Steadman Post of the GAR and was still commander when he died. He fell on his way to town from North Ansley with his suitcase going to the National Encampment of the GAR at Des Moines, Iowa. He was a loyal citizen and friend to all. Leaves 4 children, 23 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral at Modern Woodmen of Am. Hall at Ansley by Rev. Robert B. Smith and Rev. J. W. Henderson of M. E. Church. Taps saluted a great respected old Civil War hero. Stuckey-Amsberry-Rhoades Post American Legion had rites and the GAR veterans were honorary pallbearers. This obituary provided by
