Reuben S. Manning- Sargent Leader, July 25, 1918
Reuben S. Manning was born Sept. 13, 1830 at Helliers Station, Marshal County, Va. In 1856 he moved to Iowa and just before the Civil War he moved to Illinois where he enlisted in Company K, 2nd Regiment Light Artillery Jan. 15, 1861. He was in service until the war closed. He was in many engagements but was never wounded. He was not only a soldier of our civil government but early in life he enlisted as a soldier in the army of the Lord. He was ordained into the ministry about 1869 and was a faithful minister of the Word as long as his health permitted him to work. In 1867 July 5th he was united in marriage to Ruth Gilmore of LaSalle, Ill who preceded him into the spirit world 3 months and 5 days. To this union 6 children were born - B.H. Manning of Sargent, David L. of Hebron, Nebr., Mrs. Phoebe Hinkley of St. Paul, Florence May died at 21 months, Orville E. age 32, and Reuben S. at the age of 4. Mrs. Pear Judd, an adopted daughter lives at Bako, Oklahoma. Mr. Manning made his home in York County in 1869 and came to Custer County near Lone Tree in 1883. He moved to Oklahoma in 1894 then again in 1903 where he was stricken with paralysis. Since then they made their home in Sargent until Mrs. Manning’s death. He died at the home of his son, B.H. Manning July 23, 1918 aged 87 years 9 months and 23 days. Burial was in Somerford Cemetery. - Sargent Leader, August 1, 1918
