Pioneers and Old Settlers, Dakota County, Nebraska
26th annual reunion of the Pioneers Old Settlers
August 1906
James Hagan died at his home in Hubbard, September 13,
1906, at the advanced age of 89 years, 3 months and 20 days. His wife died in
1896.
Mr. and Mrs. John Church, of South Sioux City, died at
their home September 20, and 21 respectively. The funeral was held September 23.
They had lived in South Sioux City since 1870. Mr. Church was 87 years old and
Mrs. Church 79. Twelve children had been born to them, ten of whom are living.
Mrs. Leonard Bates, one of the pioneers of Dakota
county, died at her home in Los Angeles, Cal, September 21, 1906.
Mrs. C P Dow died at her home at South Sioux City,
October 8, 1906, aged 70 years. The interment was in the Dakota City cemetery.
Thomas Duggan died at his home at Hubbard, Neb,
October 6, 1906, aged 41 years. He was one of the pioneers and was born in
Dakota county in 1865. He had been married only six months when called away.
William B. Wright, better known as ‘Bub’ Wright, a
pioneer, died at home at Harrison, Neb, November 26, 1906. The deceased man was
a brother of Mrs. Alice Sides.
Dr. Walter Lewis, one of the pionees of Dakota county,
died at Decatur, Neb, December 3, 1906, agen 82 years. In the early years his
practice extended from Blair to Dakota City and from West Point to Mapleton, Io.
John S. Donnell, one of the pioneers of Dakota County,
died at the home of his son, Joseph, May 9, 1907, aged 73 years.
Asa Rathbun died at his home at La Crosse, Wash. May
7, 1907, aged 79 years. Asa Rathbun came to Dakota county from Peoria, Ill, May
14, 1858. He had all his earthly possessions in two wagons drawn by two yoke of
oxen. He did not stop to look around, but went to work to build a home. Most of
his family were born here. His wife died in 1900. He sold out here and moved to
La Crosse in 1901.
Mrs. Abbie Shook, wife of Elias Shook, one of the old
pioneers of Dakota county, died at her home in chamberlain, S.D, May 29, 1907.
Mary D. Hale, one of the pioneer women of this county,
died at the home of her son, Frank Hale, June 12, 1907, aged 80 years.
Mrs. Dennis Hogan died at her home in Jackson, July
19, 1907. She was born in New York and moved to Dakota county with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ryan in 1857. She was married to Dennis Hogan in 1869.
Martha A. Johns, better known as Grandma Corwin, one
of the pioneers of Dakota county, died at her home at Homer, December 21, 1906,
aged 82 years. She leaves a large family of children, all grown.
Mrs. Catherine Gibbs, one of the pioneers of South
Sioux City, died at her home February 10, 1907, aged 76 years.
Harrison Sayres, one of the pioneer settlers of Dakota
county, died at his home at Waterbury, Neb, February 23, 1907, age 78 years. He
was an honored member of the G.A.R.
Thos Ashford, sr, one of the pioneers, arrived in
Dakota county, march 10, 1856, and his good work show wherever he had lived. In
1858 he burned the first kiln of brick in Dakota county to be used in building a
large hotel in old Omadi. He did not get his pay and the hotel was never built.
When the Pike’s Peak gold excitement broke out in 1859, he was one of the first
to go. He spent two years in the mines, then came back to this county. He then
began farming and stock raising and became very wealthy. He died April 18, 1907,
on the farm where he had lived fifty years, aged 79 years. He leaves his wife
and six children, three boys and three girls. Two children died some years ago.
O C Treadway, one of the pioneers of Sioux City and
northeast Nebraska, died at his home in Sioux City, May 8, 1907, aged 77 years,
“Old Tred” as he was known by the old timers, was one of the best lawyers of the
northwest. He always had a scrap on hand, and kept the jury, judge, and in fact,
the whole court, guessing as to what would come next. He was truly one of the
noted me of this part of the west.
Mrs. Emma C. Waterman died at her home September 23,
1906, aged 60 years. She came to Daktoa county in 1880. She leaves a husband and
one daughter, Mrs. Marvin Armour. Her friends were numbered only by those who
knew her.
John Peckham died at his home in Hubbard September 29,
1906, aged 67 years.
David Ganaway was drowned near Chamberlain, S.D.,
while hunting. Young Ganaway’s mother was a daughter of John Johnson, who lived
in Omadi product for many years.
Charles Zapp died at his home at Emerson, October 23,
1906 aged 77 years.
Harold O’Connor, son of C J O’Conor, died at Hutchins,
Kan. While en route to Fort Bayard, N M, November 21, 1906.
George E Hagaman died at Grant, Mich, November 26,
1906. He leaves a young wife, formerly Roselyn Beardshear, and a baby, and one
daughter by a former marriage.
John C O’Neill died at St Joseph’s hospital, Sioux
City, December 5, 1906, aged 68. He resided in Jackson for twenty-seven years.
Mary Young (nee Lindsley) died at her home near
Phillip, S.D, December 6, 1906, aged 67 years.
Mrs. Goldina Knap died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. August Wilkins, December 24, 1906, aged 89 years.
Mrs. Fay DeForrest, of Walker’s Island, died
Springdale S D, while on a visit to her sister, Mrs. Geo Betz, December 29,
1906, aged 31 years.
Frank H Ayres died at his home in Dakota City January
5, 1907. He came to Daktoa county in 1870.
Dennis Toohey died t St Joseph’s hospital, Sioux City,
Io, January 6, 1907, aged 74 years. He came to Dakota county in 1870.
Miss Alwine Schriever died at her home at Dakota City,
January 15, 1907, at the age of 79 years. She came to Dakota county in in 1885.
Ludwig Kipper died at the home of his daughter, Mrs
Garret Mason, at Homer, February 2, 1907, aged 71 years. He came to Dakota
county in 1876.
Thos A Teter died at his home in South Sioux City
February 24, 1907 aged 56 years. He came to Daktoa county in 1888.
Mrs. L M Leslie died at her home at Dakota City,
February 22, 1907, aged 42 years.
Neil Sorrenson Dierup at his home at Homer, March 21,
1907, aged 71 years. He came to Dakota county in 1887.
Franklin Dunnell died at the home of his son, Fred
Dunnell, in Sioux City, March 17, 1907, aged 80 years. He came to Dakota county
in 1889. Was also a member of the G.A.R.
Martin Lockwood died at his home in Denver, Colo,
March 19, 1907, aged 60 years. He came to Dakota county in 1890. He was a
prominent business man among the pioneers in South Sioux City, and was well
known in Masonic circles.
Mrs. James Orr, wife of James Orr, wife of James Orr,
or as he is better known “Budd” Orr, died at her home at Blyburg, April 1, 1907,
aged 45 years. She leaves a husband and sevenchildren.
Mrs. Geo W Rockwell, known to all of her friends as
Aunt Betty, died at her home southwest of Homer, April 3, 1907, aged 65 years.
She came to Dakota county in 1868. She was one of God’s noblest women.
Mrs. Harry Buckwalter died at the home of her father,
H A Jandt in Sioux City, May 18, 1907, aged 49 years. Strictly speaking, she was
not a resident of Dakota county, but her many visits t her son, Frank B
Buckwalter, who was in business in Homer, made her well known and loved by all
who knew her. She leaves a husband and two sons.
James Deloughery, of Jackson, Neb, died at Rapid City,
S D, June 6, 1907, aged 19 years. He was born in Dakota County.
Mrs. Ed Hammond, wife of Ed Hammond, one of Dakota
county’s boys, died at their home at Schuyler, Neb, June 29, 1907, aged 38
years.
Mrs. Lucy Ann Groves died at her home at Emerson, Neb,
July 4, 1907, aged 83 years. She came to Dakota county in 1870.
Mrs Nancy McPherson died at her home of her daughter,
Mrs. Jessie Little, in Sioux City, July 13, 1907, aged 78 years. She came to
Dakota county in 1968.
Mrs. August Johnson died at her home near Hubbard,
July 22, 1907.
Mrs. Kate Smith, nee Rooney, died at her home at
Hubbard, July 24, 1907.
John McConahey, an old resident of South Sioux City,
died at Norfolk, Neb, August 27, 1907, aged 87 years. For years he was prominent
in G.A.R. Circles.
