Pioneers and Old Settlers, Dakota County, Nebraska

August 29, 1912
Pioneers and Old Settlers Mingle in Happy Gathering
Thursday, August 29, marked another cycle in the annuals of the Pioneers and Old Settlers’ Association of Dakota County, Nebraska. Perfect weather conditions helped swell the attendance and by 1:30 nearly 4,000 people had assembled at Clinton Park to enjoy the happy occasion, and meet old acquaintances – many of whom had come from other states and localities to again grasp the hand of the gray haired pioneers who for thirty-one years have made these reunions a bright spot in the memory of every old settler.
Rev. Robert Wheeler, pastor of the First Presbyterian church at South Omaha, gave the annual address, following the dinner hour. His talk was along the line of pioneer times. Coming to this locality in 1870 he realized the situation as he found it in the then early times, which fact made his talk more interesting to his hearers. He was followed by several of the pioneers with short talks on pioneer times.
A resolution was offered by Historian M M Warner changing the constitution to make all who settled here prior to 1880, pioneers. This will be considered at the next reunion.
