Christian Pansegaru (Sioux City Journal, 12 Nov 1936, B3, funeral notice published Sioux City Journal, 13 Nov 1936, 11) Christian Pansegaru, 82, a resident of Dixon county, Neb., since 1908, died Wednesday in the home of a son, Ronald Pansegaru, three miles west of Ponca, following a brief sickness. Mr. Pansegaru was born in Russia and had lived in the United States since 1908. Surviving him are his widow, Emma; five sons, Ronald and Arthur of Ponca, Edward and Emil of Marshalltown, and Adolph of Sioux City; four daughters, Mrs. E. Klein of Wakefield, Mrs. W. Krause of Allen, Mrs. R. Rahtz of Anthon, and Mrs. Emma Schlacht of Russia. Thirty-seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. The body is at Otto E. Kuk’s funeral home in South Sioux City.


William T. Powell

September 7, 1977, Sioux City Journal, Sioux City, Iowa

William T Powell, 74, of Dubuque, Iowa, a former Sioux City resident, died Tuesday, at a Dubuque hospital. Mr. Powell was born 16 August 1903, at Dakota City, Nebraska. He married Grace Holmes, 19 April 1924, in Sioux City. They moved to Dubuque in September of 1975. Mr. Powell had been employed at the Sioux City Elk's Lodge until retiring in 1965. Survivors include: the widow, Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Tott of Dubuque and Mrs. Don (Jean) Schmidt of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one great grandchildren; three brothers, Henry C. of South Sioux City; Donald N of Mira Loma, Calif. and Harold of Sioux City; and three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Holbrook and Mrs. Cecil (Elda) Holmes, both of Sioux City; and Pearl Sanford of South Sioux City. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Haudenschield & DeWachader Funeral Home at Dubuque. Burial will be in Dubuque.

Joseph Alvin Preston

May 15, 1978, South Sioux City Star

Funeral services for Joseph Alvin Preston, 47, 502 East Sixth Street, South Sioux City, will be held at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Jack Becker Funeral Homer here.


The Rev. Denny Silk, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery. Members of Cownie-Church Post 307 of the American Legion of South Sioux will conduct flag ceremonies at the grave site.


Mr. Preston was dead on arrival at a Sioux City hospital Monday following a car accident.

Dr. Thomas L. Coriden, Woodbury County medical examiner, said an autopsy Tuesday indicated Mr. Preston died of a heart attack. He apparently suffered a heart attack while driving in the vicinity of W. 14th and Geneva streets Monday.

Mr. Preston was born in South Sioux City, May 20, 1930. He lived all his life in South Sioux City. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He had been employed as a laborer, retiring three years ago because of poor health.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Durilla (Luella) Harmon of Sioux City, Mrs. Francis (Evelyn) Schwarte of South Sioux City, and Mrs. Berton (Lillian) Haaskinson of San Jose, Calif.; three brothers, Lyle of Huron S.D., Marvin of Sioux City and Albert of South Sioux City.

Henry C. Powell

Henry c. Powell, 83, 215 W. 21st St., South Sioux City, died Wednesday in Green Acres Care Center at South Sioux City after a long illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Jack Becker Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Clifford Mehrer of Jehovah’s Witnesses will officiate. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery.
Mr. Powell was born Aug. 8, 1896, in Dakota County, Neb. and was a lifelong resident.
He married Winnie r. Hackett, March 1, 1921, in Dakota City. He was an electrician and a vegetable farmer, retiring in 1963.
Survivors include the widow; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Linda) Barker of Commerce City, Colo.; one brother, Donald of Valley Center, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Sanford of South Sioux City and Mrs. Cecil (Elda) Holmes of Sioux City; and five grandchildren.

South Sioux City – Gertrude Margaret Powell, 93, of South Sioux City died Tuesday, March 1, 1994, at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.
The body was cremated. There will be no visitation of memorial service. Becker-Hunt Funeral Home handled the arrangement.
Mrs. Powell was born Sept., 22, 1900, in Elk Point, S.D., the daughter of Claude J. and Ellen G. (Babcock Wood. She married Frank E. Powell, Dec. 6, 1915, in South Sioux City since 1902.
Survivors include a son, Melvin Powell of Sloan, Iowa; three daughters, Isabelle Renkel, Ruth Reed and Phyllis Reed, all of South Sioux city; four sisters, Louise (Helen) Helt, Burnst Matz, Linnie Powell and Winnifred Wood, all of South Sioux City; a half-brother, Neilan Wood of Sioux City; 31 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Marquart; two sisters, Mildred and Nellie; and a half brother, Levi Wood.

Naomi J. Frey, Phillips

Naomi J. Phillips, 72, of Lake Madison, S.D., formerly of South Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at McKennan Hospice in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Nancy Tomlinson, officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery, Lyons, Neb. Visitation will be 1 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with the family present after 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Phillips was born Dec. 8, 1926, in Rosalie, Neb., the daughter of John E. and Nellie I. (Peterson) Frey.
She was raised in South Sioux City and graduated from South Sioux City High School.
She married Robert Phillips on Jan. 23, 1943, in South Sioux City. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 1948.
She was employed with the Coffee Pot Nook and Stadium Café in Sioux Falls. In 1954, she was employed as a machine operator at Hoerner Box Co., retiring in 1977. They moved to Lake Madison.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Jim Sorensen of Alburquerque, N.M.; a brother and his wife, John W. and Kathryn Frey of Lyons; two sisters, Sandra Jacobsen of Sioux City and Patricia and her husband, David Dryden, of Roswell, N.M.; and two grandchildren, Troy and Shannon Ponto.

Zoi Michele Persinger

Homer, Neb. – Zoi Michele Persinger, 25, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Homer, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in Lincoln from injuries suffered in a traffic accident.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City, with the Revs. Terry and Nancy Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery, rural Homer. Visitation was Sunday 4 to 8:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, South Sioux City.
Miss Persinger was born April 9, 1974, in Pender, Neb., the daughter of Shawn and Mickie (Andersen) Persinger. She graduated from Homer High School in 1992. She received her master’s degree from Wayne State College in Communications and Public Relations.
She was a Methodist, and a 4-H Leader in Lincoln.
Survivors include her mother of Homer; her father of Humphrey, Neb.; a brother, Shamus, and a sister, Kate, both of Homer; her finance, Scott Oorlog of Lincoln; paternal grandparents, Mike and Melva Persinger of South Sioux City; a paternal great-grandmother, Ruby Russell of Ponca, Neb.; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Brock Greek, Kevin Stoner, Brett Matteen, Michael Kasting, Chuck Nielsen, and Russell Christiensen.

Alice m. Wenther, Pedersen

Jackson, Neb. – Alice M. Pedersen, 82, of Jackson died Friday, July 23, 1999, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Jackson, with the Rev. Wilfred j. Spenner officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Jackson. Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. The body will then be taken to the church for visitation from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a parish rosary at 4:30 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Pedersen was born Nov. 27, 1916, in Jackson, the daughter of Fred H. and Amelia M. (Andersen) Wenther. She graduated from Ponca High School, and received her teaching certificate from Wayne State Teachers College.
She taught school at rural Jackson and Jackson Public School, and South Sioux City Public Schools.
She married Louis M. Pedersen on April 20, 1940, in Le Mars, Iowa. She lived on a farm at Jackson for her entire married life.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, flowers and working on the farm. She had a deep interest in cattle.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Terry and Marcia of Jackson; a daughter and her husband, Sharie and Del Lieber of South Sioux City; six grandchildren: Kevin Pedersen, Lannette Brewer, Deb VanCleave, Dan, Randy, and Richard Lieber; 15 great-grandcvhildren; a brother and his wife, Harvey and Alice Wenther of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe; two sisters, Margaret and Bonnie; and a great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren; Dan, Randy, and Richard Lieber, Debby VanCleave, Lannette Brewer and Kevin Pedersen.

William Truman. Powell, Sr.

William T. Powell, 86, lifelong resident of Dakota county, Neb., died Tuesday at the home of a son, Henry, in Sioux City after a three-month illness.

Mr. Powell was born February 10, 1869.
Survivors are five sons, Henry, Frank, William, and Harold, all of Sioux City; and Donald of Sacramento, Calif., four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Holbrook, Mrs. Dora Zeitler, Mrs. Elda Holmes, all of Sioux City, Mrs. Pearl Sanford of South Sioux City, Mrs. Frank Brotherton of Waterbury, Neb., and Mrs. Ida Andreen, who lives in South Dakota, 25 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild.

Body was taken to the Becker funeral home at South Sioux City.

Frank Earl Powell

Frank Earl Powell, 79, former Sioux City resident, died unexpectedly Tuesday night at his Artesia, Calif. home.

Mr. Powell, formerly was employed by the Sioux City Brick & Tile County, retiring in 1961. He moved to California in 1964.

He was born July 21, 1896, at Jackson, and he moved to Sioux City in 1929. He married Inez Oliver July 6, 1935, at Elk Point.

Survivors include the widow, two sons, Louis A. of Lakewood, Calif., and Melvin of South Sioux City; five daughters, Mrs. Isabelle Renkel, Mrs. Ruth Reed, and Mrs. Phyllis Reed, all of South Sioux City, Mrs. Charlotte Marquart of Dakota City, and Miss Janice Powell of Sioux City; four brothers, Henry of Dakota City, William and Harold, both of Sioux City, and Donald of Fullerton, Calif., four sisters, Mrs. Hazel Holbrook, Mrs. Dora Zeitler, and Mrs. Elda Holmes, all of Sioux City, and Mrs. Pearl Sanford of South Sioux City; 37 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.

The body will arrive Friday night at the Berkemier Funeral Home.

Lydia May Snyder Powell

 Mrs. C W 'May' Miller, 77, Jefferson, S.D., died Thursday at a hospital here after a long illness.

She was born October 30, 1879, in Doniphan county, Kan., and she had resided for many years in Union county, S.D., and Dakota county, Neb.  She was a member of the Methodist church.

 Survivors include the widower, five sons, Frank, Bill and Harold , all of Sioux City, Neb., and Donald Powell of Artesia, Cal.; five stepsons, Charles Miller of Jefferson, George and Jack of South Sioux City and Bill and Bob of Ferndale, Cal., four daughters, Mrs. Cecil Holmes, Mrs. Kermit Zeitler and Mrs. Grant Holbrook, all of Sioux City and Mrs. George Sanford of South Sioux City; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Edna Keller of Chicago and Mrs. Marie Anderson of South Sioux City; a brother, Walter Snyder of South Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Grenier of South Sioux City and Mrs. Bess Osborn of Des Moines, 26 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The Nelson-Berger north side funeral home has charge of arrangements.

Henry Powell

March 3, 1911, 'Dakota City Herald'

Henry Powell, one of the pioneer residents of Dakota County, passed away at his home in this place Wednesday afternoon, at the age of 83 years. His death was due to old age. Mr. Powell was born in Massachusetts March 29, 1829, and came to Dakota county with the vanguard of civilization in 1857. He was married to Araminta Elam, who, with the following children survive him: Will, Burt, Clay, Richard, George, and Arthur Powell and Mrs. Edith Brotherton, of Dakota City, and Mrs. Ida Andreen of South Sioux City. The funeral will be held today, Friday, at 10 o'clock, from the residence, interment being in the Taylor Cemetery.

Arminta Elam, Powell

GRANDMA POWELL DIES FROM OPERATION

Mrs. Arminta Powell, one of the earliest pioneer women of Dakota county, died at Rochester, Minn, last Thursday morning, July 18, 1912, age sixty-four years, following an operation for the removal of a goiter on her neck. The operation was performed Wednesday at the Mayo Bros hospital, and the shock to her weakened system was more than the patient could stand and death resulted.

The remains were shipped home for burial, arriving here Saturday morning accompanied by her son Burt, who had made the trip to Rochester with her three weeks ago.

The funeral services were held at the home of the deceased at 10 o'clock Sunday forenoon, conducted by Rev. S. L. Keller, pastor of the Lutheran Church. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Taylor cemetery, by the side of her husband, Henry Powell, who proceeded her to that other world, March 1, 1911.

Arminta came to Dakota county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Elam, in 1856, from Illinois; was married to Mr. Elam in 1864. She is survived by eight children, namely: Will, George, Burt, Arthur, Richard and Clay, and Mrs. Edith Brotherton of Dakota City, and Mrs. Ida Andreen of Sioux City.
