Mrs. Ben Rooney – Mrs. Ben Rooney, 87, Hubbard, retired school teacher, died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital of brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hubbard. The Rev. John C. Connealy, pastor of Sacred Heart Church at Emerson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hubbard. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Jack E. Becker Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Mrs. Rooney, the former Mabel E. McGee, was born Aug. 4, 1891 in Hubbard.
She was married June 23, 1917, in Hubbard. Mr. Rooney died in January of 1926 in Hubbard.
She was a lifelong area resident and taught school at Hubbard Grade School for 44 years, retiring in 1962. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar Society of the church.
Survivors include two sons, Tom of Hubbard and John in the navy in California; one brother, Brother Leo McGee of California; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (Sioux City Journal, Thurs. 1 Feb 1979, A5).
Ellis Leroy ‘Lefty’ Roberts

Merrill, Iowa – Ellis Leroy ‘Lefty’ Roberts, 68, of Merrill died Sunday, Jan.
17, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Le Mars (Iowa) Bible Church, with
the Rev. Fred Gums officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery,
Sioux City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer at 7 p.m. at
the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnston Funeral
home in Le Mars.
Mr. Roberts was born Sept. 20, 1930, in South Sioux City, the son of William
Ellis ‘Eli’ and F. Mae (Chamberlain) Roberts. He graduated from high school in
Sioux City.
He was employed with Aalf’s manufacturing in Sioux City for several years and
with Rocklin Manufacturing for 15 years, retiring in 1995.
He married Joy Mills on May 17, 1974. The couple had made their home in
Merrill for 25 years.
He was a member of Le Mars Bible Church and enjoyed bowling, golf and reading.
Survivors include his wife; a son, William Ellis ‘Bob’ of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a
daughter and her husband, Julie and Bob Davis of Sioux City; two stepchildren
and their spouses, Ken and Bonnie Hunter of Harris, Iowa, and Connie and Jeff
Hanson of Le Mars; a sister and her husband Beverly and Clarence Heineman of
South Sioux City; a brother, Darrell; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild;
and a daughter-in-law, Twila Schmit.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Matthew Ross.
Pallbearers will be Ray Kindler, Jim Hoss, Gaylan Lassen, Paul Betsworth, Jack
Berger and Jim Goergen.

Lloyd M. Rich
Wednesday July 26, 1978, South Sioux City Star
Services for Lloyd M. Rich, 70, 409 South 20th Street, Dakota City, were
held Saturday morning at the Gospel Lighthouse in South Sioux with the Rev.
Terry Graham and the Rev. B. L. Swort officiating.
Burial was in Omaha Valley Cemetery, Homer, under the direction of the Meyer
Brothers Colonial Chapel of Sioux City.
Mr. Rich, a retired Zenith Radio Corporation of Iowa employee, was dead on
arrival at a Sioux City hospital July 26. He was stricken while in Sioux
City and rushed to the hospital.
A prayer service was held at the funeral home Friday night.
Mr. Rich was born November 5, 1907 at Walthill. He farmed in the Emerson
vicinity for eight years before moving to Dakota City in 1953. He worked for
Zenith until his retirement in 1968.
Mr. Rich married Luella Hiserote February 23, 1938, in South Sioux.
Survivors include the widow; three sons, the Rev. Thomas Rich of Sioux City,
Vern of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Merle of Sergeant Bluff; a foster son,
Chuck Rose of South Sioux; two daughters, Mrs. Wes (LaVonne) Campbell of
Hartington, and Mrs. Dan (Mildred) Armstrong of Sioux City; five brothers,
Floyd of Sioux City, Boyd of Pender, Roy who lives in Indiana, Orville of
Kalamazoo, Michigan and Dave of Dallas, Texas; four sisters, Mrs. George
(Nellie) Hunter, and Mrs. Owen (Dorothy) Lester and Mrs. Harold (Myrna)
Jones, all of Sioux City, and Mrs. Wilma Beltz of Dallas and 13
grandchildren.

Kermit Rhodman

Services for Kermit Rhodman, 75, a resident of Green Acres Nursing Home,
3501 Dakota Avenue, South Sioux, who died after a long illness Sunday at the
nursing home where he had resided the past three years, were held Wednesday
at the Berkemeier Funeral Home, Sioux City.
The Rev. Donald Bogue of Riverside United Methodist Church officiated.
Burial was in Gross, Nebr. Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.
He was born Sept. 7, 1902, at Pierce, and married Zora Mae Isom on Dec. 11,
1924, at Sioux City. The couple lived at Laurel, after their marriage and
moved to McGregor, Minn., in 1930. They returned to Nebraska in 1943. Mrs.
Rhodman died in 1954.
He moved to Sioux City in 1956 and was a farmer most of his life.
Survivors include four sons, Roy of Sioux City, Elvin of Pollock, Mo.,
Walter of Allen, and Norman of South Sioux City; four daughters, Mrs.
Diedrich (Marie) Von Minden and Mrs. (Lucille) Kraft, both of Waterbury, and
Mrs. Lloyd (LaVern) Kraft, and Mrs. Larry (Marilyn) Hahler, both of Lytton,
Iowa; two brothers, Cecil of Oakland, and Vernon of Norfolk, two sisters,
Mrs. Dave (Myrtle) Carlson of Oakland and Mrs. Lillian Berme of Ogalla,
Nebr.; two half-sisters, Mrs. Eignor (Delphine) Gustafson of Duluth, Minn.,
and Mrs. Roy (Lois) Carlson of Proctor, Minn.; 22 grandchildren, and 10
great-grandchildren.

Hubbard, Neb - Francis Harold Reed, 70, of Hubbard died Saturday, May 6,
1989, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South
Sioux City with the Rev. Leonard Lee officiating.
Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery, rural Hubbard. Visitation will be from 10
a.m. to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Mr. Reed was born Aug 21, 1918, in Jackson, Neb., and was a lifelong Dakota
County resident. He married Phyllis E Powell June 26, 1937, in South Sioux
City, He was employed by Chris Hansen Construction Co for more than 30
years, retiring in 1980.
Mr. Reed was a member of Laborer's International Local 427 of Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Francis A of Yankton, SD, Ernest and
Rodney, both of South Sioux City, Terry of Harker Heights, Texas, and Joseph
of Hubbard; four daughters, Phyllis Stokes of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Beverly
Bishop, Connie Smith and Kim Allen, all of South Sioux City; 30
grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gary, seven brothers and one sister.

Christine A. Reed, 86, of South Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at a
Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in
South Sioux City, with the Rev. Mike Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be
in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. with the family
present after 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Reed was born July 5, 1912, in South Sioux City, the daughter of John
V. and Anna C. Nelson.
She married Glenn W. Reed in 1931, in Elk Point. He died Aug. 8, 1965, in
South Sioux City.
She was employed at the Sioux City Battery Co. and South Sioux City schools
and retired from Green Acres Care Center.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was a former
deacon.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands and their husbands,
Geraldine and Richard Anderson of Dakota City and Donna and Francis Hoing of
Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Dorothy Reed of Ida Grove, Iowa; 10 grandchildren,
and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Charles G.; and three brothers,
Clifford, Robert and Victor Nelson.

Maurice W. “Two Gun” Rave

Services for Maurice W. “Two Gun” Rave, 65, Winnebago, who died Tuesday in
University Hospital in Iowa City after a long illness, were held Saturday in the
Howard Fox residence at Winnebago.
Burial was in the Winnebago Cemetery.
Mr. Rave was born Feb 22, 1913 at Winnebago. He married Roxanne White at Dakota
City. In recent weeks he made his home with a daughter in Sioux City.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Maureen DeForest of South Sioux City and
Ms. Eleanor Clayborne of Sioux City; two sons, Eugene of Iowa City and Charles
of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Tyndall of Macy and Mrs. Ralph (Alberta)
Ferguson of Omaha; a brother Wilmont, of California State and eight
grandchildren.

(August 22, 1964 – April 1, 2015), Becker – Hunt Funeral Home
Daniel Rangel, 50 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at a
Sioux City Hospital. Services will be at the Castillo Mission Funeral Home in
San Antonio, Texas.

Mrs. Frank L. Ryan, 46, 330 W. 21st St., South Sioux City, a former nurse's aide
at St. Luke's Medical Center until her retirement because of ill health last
August, died Monday at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in
South Sioux City. The Rev. Theodore J.C. Schuldt will officiate. Burial will be
Dakota City Cemetery under direction of the Jack Becker Funeral Home in South
Sioux City.
Pallbearers will be Leo and Andrew Miller, Emery Hines, Charles Keleher, Larry
Fustus and David Soleberg.
The former Opal LaVonne Shook, Mrs. Ryan was born Sept. 25, 1925, in South Sioux
City. She was a longtime resident of South Sioux City and she was a member of
the First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City.
Mrs. Ryan was married in Sioux City Jan 16, 1946.
Survivors include the widower; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Marcia) Lellos of
Chicago and Miss Kelly Ryan at home; a son Dennis, at home; her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Shook of South Sioux City; two brothers, Lloyd of Cody, Neb., and
Earl of Sioux City, and a grandson.
A memorial in the name of Mrs. Ryan has been established at St. Luke's Medical
Center.

Herman Roost

Herman Roost Dies of Cancer
After an illness of several
months’ duration, Herman Roost, one of the prominent German farmers of this
vicinity, died at his home in the Brushy Bend neighborhood Thursday night, June
29th, at 9:30 o’clock.
His death resulted from cancer of the stomach
and hardening of the arteries.
Mr. Roost was born near Hamburg,
Germany, in 1848.
He came to America in his youth, and settled in
Cook county, Ill.
He was married June 19, 1878, to Miss Bertha
Eble, at Elgin, Ill., and soon after removed to Dakota county, Nebr., and
settled on the farm where he died.
By dint of hard work, industry and thrift he
had accumulated a competence and built a comfortable home.
He is survived by his widow and
three children.
The children are:
Mrs. Henry Nuerenberger, of Wakefield, Nebr.;
Miss Amanda Roost, at home, and Dr. Frederick Roost, of Sioux City, a lieutenant
in Ambulance Company No. 1, of Sioux City, now stationed at Des Moines, Iowa.
A brother, Louis Roost, of Brushy Bend, also
survives him.
The funeral services were held
Friday afternoon at 12:30 from the home and at 2 o’clock from the German
Lutheran church at Salem.
Rev. L. Frank, of Ponca, Neb., conducted the
services.
Interment was made in the Taylor cemetery.
A large concourse of relatives and friends were present
at the last sad rites to pay their respects to the departed.

Richard D. Rockwell

Death Claims Another Dakota County Pioneer
After an illness of a year or more, R.D. Rockwell, a pioneer resident of this
county, died at his home three miles southeast of Hubbard, Nebr., December 24,
1914. His death was due to hardening of the arteries. He had also been a
sufferer with an aggravated attack of gangrene on his foot, caused by an injury,
although not confined to his bed.
Deceased was born in Dekalb county, Ind., January 21, 1851. He came to Dakota
county first on August 17, 1869, and later returned to Dekalb county when on the
8th day of October, 1873 he was married to Susan Meyers. A few years later they
moved to Dakota county and made this their permanent home since.
Mr. Rockwell followed carpenting for a number of years, and later took up
arming, having one of the finest improved farms in the vicinity of Hubbard,
where he lived for the past forty-one years.
The deceased is survived by a wife Susan and four children. They are, John D.
Rockwell and Mrs. Mabel J. Twamley, of South Sioux City; Mrs. Laura E. Whitaker
of Wausa, Nebr., and Harry Rockwell, at home. One child, Charles E., having
preceded the father in death. Besides the family he is survived by three sisters
– Mrs. John Welker of Homer, Nebr., Mrs. Rose Peterson, of Crookston, Nebr., and
Mrs. Alice Walters, of Des Moines, Ia., and two brothers – Stephen M. Rockwell,
of Homer, and Jefferson P. Rockwell, of Hubbard.
Mr. Rockwell always took an active part in the welfare of the county, and on
several occasions had filled the office of assessor for his precinct with
credit. Hi life was as an open book and his word was as good as his bond. He was
a member of the M.B.A. order, in which he carried a policy for $2,000.
The funeral services were held Sunday from the M.E. church in Homer, Rev.
Keckler officiating. Interment was in the Hale cemetery near Homer.

Mrs. Catharine Riley

Mrs. Thos Casey, who was called her by the illness of her mother, Mrs. Catharine
Rile departed for her home at Cleveland, Ohio, Tuesday. Her daughter, Marie, who
attended school here the past two years accompanied her home.
Obituary
Mrs. Catharine Reiley passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J J McBride,
last Thursday afternoon after a lingering illness, aged 81 years. The deceased
was one of the earliest pioneers of Dakota county and was highly esteemed by
all. She is survived by five children, they are Miles Riley, of Sioux City; Jack
Riley, Tucson, Ariz; Mrs. Tom Casey, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. J J McBride and
William of this place. The funeral was held from the Catholic church here last
Saturday morning, Rev. Father Roche officiating. Interment was made in St.
John’s cemetery.
