South Sioux City - Frances L. Shook 82, 2207 Second Ave., South Sioux City, died
Wednesday in a South Sioux City nursing home after a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Otto
Dale, interim pastor and the Rev. Alfred Walck officiating. Burial will be in
Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the
family present from 7 p.m. in Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City.
Mrs. Shook, the former Frances Jones, was born May 27, 1905, in Sioux City. She
married Thomas E. Shook Feb. 21, 1923, in Dakota City. She had been a resident
of South Sioux City since 1923.
Mrs. Shook was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, a son, Earl A. of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren
and 28 great-grandchildren.

City, died Monday, July 15, 1991, at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First
Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Dal Jirousek officiating.
Burial will be in Dakota City. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home
in South Sioux City.
Mr. Shook was born Jan. 29, 1905, in Sioux City, the
son of Franklin and Mary (Brown) Shook. He married Frances L. Jones Feb. 21,
1923 in Dakota City. She died Jan. 20, 1988, in South Sioux City. He had been a
resident of South Sioux City since 1922. He was employed at Armour & Co.,
retiring in 1963.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Earl Shook and
Dona of Sioux City; a brother Frank Shook of Reed City, Mich.; two sisters,
Martha Sleesman of Wyoming, MIch, and Florence O. of, MIch, -- grandchildren;
and 28 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd, and a
daughter, Opal Ryan. Pallbearers will be Gregg Stinson, Greg Moffatt, Dennis
Ryan, Richard Jochum, John Sandman, Mike Hayes, Jim Miller, and Michael Kelly.

South Sioux City -- George Sweisberger, 77, of South
Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 25, 1994, shortly after arrival at a Sioux City
hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Becker-Hunt
Funeral Home in South Sioux City with the Rev. Michael Ring, pastor of Glad
Tidings Lighthouse officiating. Burial will be in the Dakota City Cemetery.
Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., at
the funeral home.
Mr. Sweisberger was born Feb. 7, 1917, in Watertown,
S.D., the son of Charles and Henrietta (Young) Sweisberger. He formerly lived in
Sioux City and was a longtime resident of South Sioux City. He married Bernice
L. Sweisberger in May 1957 in Dakota City. He was a professional painter for
Koral Brothers until 1981, when he retired. He then was employed part time as a
bartender for Callahan's in South Sioux City.
Survivors include his wife, a son, Steve and his wife,
Nancy of Hartley, Iowa; give daughters and their husbands, Verna and David
Friggie of Westfield, Iowa; Joyce and Loyd Davis of South Sioux City; Carol and
Leonard Kruse of Burkburnett, Texas; Faye and Norman Olson of Anderson, Calif;
and Sandra and Herman Frese of Walthill, Neb.; s brother, Charles of Pilot Rock,
Ore.; five sisters, Henrietta Gill and Margaret Boyle, both of Jackson; Joyce
Prescott of Sioux City; Charleotte Powell of Kingsley, Iowa; and Helen Boyle of
Worthington, Minn; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother,
bill; a sister, Dorothy De Roin; two grandchildren; and a great grandson.
Pallbearers will be Tony Getz, David and Rusty
Friggie, Robert Sweisberger, Charles Davis and Kyle Kruse.
Note: Charlotte lived at Hornick, Iowa; Friggie is

'Fuzzy' C. Sweisberger - Memorial services for Charles
'Fuzzy' C. Sweisberger will be 11 a.m. Saturday, at Bishop Funeral Chapel in
Pendleton. Private interment is at the Pilot Rock Cemetery.
Mr. Sweisberger, 79, of Pilot Rock, died Tuesday,
August 30, 1994, at Amber Valley convalescent Center in Pendleton.
He was born Feb. 21, 1915, at Nashville, Tenn., to
Charles and Henrietta Young Sweisberger. He grew up in South Dakota and
Nebraska.
He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and
was first stationed at Little Rock, Ark., then Hebron, Neb. It was while he
served in the CCC camps that he got his nickname, 'Fuzzy'.
On April 8, 1937, he married Opal Cissna at
Washington, Kan.
They moved to Portland in 1942, and Mr. Sweisberger
worked at the aluminum plant and the Portland shipyard during World War II. In
1950, he began working for Star Metal Fabrication as a truck driver. He was
employed there for 27 years until his retirement in 1977 when he and his wife
moved to Pilot Rock.
Mr. Sweisberger enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, golf
and playing pool. During his younger years he was the light heavyweight Golden
Gloves champion of Superior, Neb., a title he retained for three years.
Survivors include his wife, Opal, at the home; sons,
Roger of Troutdale and Chris of Gresham; daughter Sharon Sacrison of Pilot Rock;
sisters, Joyce Prescott of Sioux City, Iowa; Henrietta Gill and Margaret Boyle,
both of Jackson, Neb., Helen Boyle of Worthington, Minn., and Charlotte Powell
in Iowa; seven grandchildren and 10 great grand-children.

Services for Nels Eric Swanson, 1716 Broadway, Dakota City, who died Friday at a
Sioux City Hospital after a brief illness, were held Monday at First Covenant
Church in Sioux City.
The Rev. Donald E. Lindman officiated. Burial was in the Dakota City Cemetery.
Mr. Swanson was born Aug. 8, 1898, at Stockholm, Sweden. He came to the United
States in 1920 and moved to Wakefield. He had lived in Dakota City the last 41
years. He married Montus Peterson June 19, 1934 in Sioux City.
Mr. Swanson had been a foreman at Sioux City Stockyards Co. for many years. For
the last 10 years, he has been manager of the Shrine White Horse Mounted Patrol
Clubroom.
He was a member of First Covenant Church.
Survivors include the widow; four sons, Kenneth and Charles, both of Sioux City,
Keith of Longmont, Colo., and Steve of Chicago; three daughters, Mrs. Don
(Shirley) Menefee of Sioux City, Mrs. Kenneth (Beverley) Hansen of Kingsley,
Iowa, and Mrs. Bill (Carol) Truchan of Loveland, Colo.; 16 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.

Elmer Loren Surber

Elmer Loren Surber, 86, of South Sioux City, Neb., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 1996,
at a South Sioux City Nursing Home.
Mr. Surber was born Feb. 5, 1909, at Belden, Neb., the son of Elmer Danford and
Hattie Dickey Surber. He graduated from Belden High School and attended Wayne
State. He married Rilla G. Strohm May 25, 1932, in Belden. The couple farmed
near Belden until 1956 when they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, and he graduated
from Nettleton Business College in 1957. He was an accountant at Northeast
Nebraska Telephone Company until 1979 when he retired. Mrs. Surber died August
1993, in South Sioux City.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Sharon Nash of Cypress, Calif., Jim (Joan)
Westadt of Laurel, Neb., Sharmalee (Brad) Pauling of Sioux City, Robert and
Harry Gifford of Washougal, Wash., Lois Hoffman of Salida, Colo., Eleanor (Bill)
Dreitz of Littleton, Colo., Bernice Arduser of Burlington, Colo., Shirley
(William) Hayes of Coos Bay, Ore., Betty Lou (Harold) Bock of Riverside, Calif.,
Billie Joe Strohm of Sunnymead, Calif., Janice (Lowell) Newton of Wakefield,
Neb., Joanne (Bill) Dorsa of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Duane Behren of Jamestown,
Ohio, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Jim Westradt, Brad, Dan and Doug Pauling, Steven Nash and
Lowell Newton.
In addition to his wife he was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother
Dallas Surber, and three sisters, Beulah Gifford, Alta Arduser, and Cleone
Urwiler.
Services were held Jan. 24 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev.
Terry Tomlinson officiating. Graveside services were held in the Belden City
Cemetery. The Becker Hunt funeral House was in charge of arrangements.

residence.

Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family
present 6 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin
Morningside Funeral Home.
Mrs. Steinfeld was born Feb. 14, 1915, in South Sioux City, the daughter of
Andrew and Mary (Bulzak) Macur. She was raised and lived in the South Sioux City
and Sioux City area all her life.
She married George R. Steinfeld Sept. 24, 1933, in Sioux City. He died Sept. 1,
1998, in Sioux City.
She was employed as an assembly line worker at Wincharger Corp. for 25 years.
Mrs. Steinfeld was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was a
former member of St. Francis Church Altar Society.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Leon and Shirley Steinfeld of Colorado
Springs, Colo.; tow daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Willard Goeden of
Sioux City and Geraldine and Arthur Monckton of Stockton, Calif.; a brother and
his wife, Ted and Alma Macur of Fremont, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 31
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Steinfeld; a sister, Mary
Osipowicz, and a brother, Joseph Macur.
Pallbearers will be Robert and Raymond Mundo, Brian
Steinfeld, Stanldey Monckton, Kristopher Goeden and David Rosario Jr.
A memorial has been established in her name with the Queen of Peace Inc.

Mrs. Thomas L. Smith, 95, 3501 Dakota Ave., South Sioux City, died Monday at a
Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Mrs. Smith, the former Jessie Mae Casper, was born June 21, 1882, at Cobden,
Ill. Mr. Smith Died in 1946 at Cobden. Mrs. Smith was a South Sioux City
resident for seven years and a member of the Church of Christ at Chicago.
Survivors include four daughters; Mrs. Wilson (Ruth) Weir of Sioux City, Mrs.
Ralph (Pauline) Haigh of Carlsbad, Calif., Mrs. Julia Schroeder of Chicago and
Mrs. Helen Kryl of Oakbrook, Ill.; two brothers, Paul of Mounds, Ill., and
George of Carbondale, Ill.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The body will be sent from the Jack E. Becker Funeral Home in South Sioux City
to the Carl Schlerf Funeral Home in Chicago for services and burial Thursday.

Homer, Neb. – Hazel D. Smidt, 78, of Homer died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997, at a
Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Becker-Hunt Funeral home, with the
Rev. Roger Miller, pastor of Kiefer Christian Church in Kiefer, Okla.,
officiating. Burial will be in Lyons City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to
9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smidt was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Farnam, Neb., the daughter of William and
Ora (Putman) Blodgett. She graduated from high school.
She married William A. Malone on June 13, 1935, in Pawnee City, Neb. He died
April 15, 1993, in Omaha. She later married Paul Smidt.
Mrs. Smidt was employed as a cook in various restaurants in Nebraska and the
Blue Valley Green Thumb in Hebron, Neb. She retired in 1993 and moved to Homer.
She enjoyed collecting dolls and salt and pepper shakers.
Survivors include five sons and their wives, Jack and Iona Malone of Ogallala,
Neb., James and Donna Malone and Jerry and Mary Jo Malone, all of Fremont, Neb.,
Terry and Joyce Malone of Hebron, Neb., and William Malone of Holdrege, Neb.; a
daughter, Leona Jenkins of Homer; a sister, Helen Canning; 21 grandchildren; 54
great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Marvin and Marion
Blodgett; and two sisters, Murial Hickenbottom and Ileen Smith.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, William, Timothy and Mitchel Hadan, Jerry
Malone, Jr. and Steve, Shane, William, Mike and Joe Malone.

Mrs. Simons was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Elk Point to Howard and Ida Rosenbaum. She
married Marvin Simons Jan. 10, 1953 in South Sioux City. She was a housewife and
had many hobbies including fishing, bike riding, card playing, bingo and
travelling. She was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Elk Point.
Survivors include four sons, Marian and wife Peggy of Lan---, Fla., Lonnie and
wife Joyce of South Sioux City, Rick and wife Edie of South Sioux City and shawn
Simons of South Sioux City; two daughters, Starla Engle of South Sioux City and
Tammy Holtz and husband Jeff of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; six sisters Lavonne Bensen
and husband Amos of vermillion, S.D., Corriene Horton and husband Cecil of
Akron, Iowa, Norriene Bengum and husband Howard of Elk Point, Virginia Sundleaf
and husband LeRoy of Elk Point, Ruth Wirkus of Linn Grove, Iowa, Darlene
Harrison and husband Richard of Sioux City; two brothers, Russel Rosenbaum and

She was preceded in death by brothers Richard and Orville and sister Marcella

Mrs. Sheehan was born March 8, 1934, in Macy, Neb., the daughter of William T.
and Marie (Yepma) Mayberry. She moved to South Sioux City in 1942.
On June 4, 1955, she married Eugene ‘Red’ Sheehan in Omaha. He died Nov. 2,
1991, in Omaha.
Survivors include a son, Guy and his wife, Kathi of South Sioux City; two
daughters and their husbands, Tina and Tim Torticill of South Sioux City and
Phyllis and Rene Obermeyer of Dakota City; a brother, Gilbert ‘Gib’ and his
wife, Ruby of South Sioux City; a sister, Gail and her husband, Chuck Fowler of
South Sioux City and 11 grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ted Mayberry and a
nephew.
Pallbearers will be Richard and Robert Bousquet, John Mullen, Ken Moore, Roger

Chapel.
Alice M. Pedersen – daughter lives Sioux City
Jackson, Neb – Alice M. Pedersen, 82, of Jackson died Friday, July 23, 1999, at
her residence after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Jackson, with the Rev. Wilfred J. Spenner officiating. Burial will be in St.
John’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Jackson. Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. The body will then be
taken to the church for visitation from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a parish rosary
at 4:30 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Pedersen was born Nov. 27, 1916, in Jackson, the daughter of Fred H. and
Amelia M. (Andersen) Wenther. She graduated from Ponca High School, and received
her teaching certificate from Wayne State Teachers College.
She taught school at rural Jackson and Jackson Public School, and South Sioux
City Public Schools.
She married Louis M. Pedersen on April 20, 1940, in Le Mars, Iowa. She lived on
a farm at Jackson for her entire married life.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, flowers and working on the farm. She had a deep
interest in cattle.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Terry and Marcia of Jackson;
a daughter and her husband, Sharie and Del Lieber of South Sioux City; six
grandchildren: Kevin Pedersen, Lannette Brewer, Del VanCleave, Dan, Randy, and
Richard Lieber; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harvey and Alice
Wenther of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe; two sisters, Margaret and Bonnie;
and a great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren: Dan, Randy, and Richard Lieber, Debby
VanCleave, Lannette Brewer and Kevin Pedersen.

City Cemetery under the direction of the Jack Becker Funeral Home.

and Mike Santee, Eddie, Mickey and Alan Boyd.
Mrs. Santee died Monday at a Sturgis, S.D. hospital after a brief illness. She
was visiting relatives there.
Mrs. Santee, former Eycle P. Smith was born Aug. 5, 1903, at Willington, Kan.
She was married July 2, 1921, at South Sioux City. Her husband died in 1943 in
South Sioux City.
Mrs. Santee was a long-time South Sioux City resident and a member of St. Paul
Untied Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Henry, Carl and George, all of Omaha; two
daughters, Mrs. Stewart (Maretta) Ballinger of Visilia, Calif., and Mrs. Bernice
Boyd of South Sioux City; a brother James of Faith, S.D., two sisters, Mrs. Lela
Johnson of Rapid City, S.D.; 31 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mary Jane Saltsgiver, 66, of Dakota City, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at a
local hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the
Rev. David Liewer of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in South Sioux City
officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2
to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and the family present from
6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mrs. Saltsgiver was born Sept. 6, 1932, at Sioux City to Grant E. and Hazel May
(Powell) Holbrook. She married Albert A. Saltsgiver on November 30, 1946, at
South Sioux City. She was a food service coordinator for the South Sioux City
Public School District for 25 years, retiring in 1994. She was a resident of
Dakota City for 44 years.
She was a member of the Dakota City American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed
fishing and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Mark and Betty of Le Mars;
five daughters, Sherry and her husband, Raymond Reifenrath, Jr., of Dakota city;
Sonia Kuehl and her special friend, Marlon Snyder of Wall Lake, Iowa; Sheila and
her husband, Dennis Smith of Dakota City; and Sindy and her husband Steve
Snyder, of Lakeview, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Violet and Marshall
Hamilton, and Margie McQuillen-Stamoulis and Antona Samoulis, all of Sioux City;
17 grandchildren, Raymond III and Rick Reifenrath, Kim Conway, Wade Kuehl, Lyn
Eifert, Marty and Troy Twohig, Dawn Otterman, Crystal Pudenz, Cara Johnson,
Corey Brenner, Stacy Sh----r, Christopher, Nicole and Tiffany Twiford, Misty and

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Grant Holbrook, Jr.; a
sister, Blanch Claaussen, and a grandson, John David Kuehl.

Mrs. Henrietta Sweisberger, 69, 2615 S. Paxton street, died Friday at a hospital
after a six-day illness.
Mrs. Sweisberger was born February 4, 1890 in New York City. She was married
June 19, 1912 in New York to Charles Sweisberger. He died February 15, 1949 in
Sioux City.
After residing at Sioux Falls, Mrs. Sweisberger moved to South Sioux City in
1932 and in 1934 she came to Sioux City.
Survivors include three sons, Bill of Sioux City, George of South Sioux City,
and Charles of Portland, Ore; six daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Powell and Mrs.
Joyce Prescott, both of Sioux City, and Mrs. Henrietta Gill, Mrs. Margaret
Boyle, Mrs. Dorothy DeRoin and Mrs. Helen Boyle, all of Jackson, Neb; a brother,
Bill Young and a sister, Miss Amelia Young, both of New York City, 30
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The body was taken to the Jack Becker funeral home in South Sioux City.

Veteran golf Pro Dies Here -- Charles Sweisberger, 60, taught in Area 20 Years
Charles Sweisberger, 60, widely known golf professional in the Sioux City area,
died Tuesday at his home, 2615 S. Paxton street.
He spent more than 20 years teaching golf at various courses in South Dakota and
Iowa, including many years of service at four links here.
Mr. Sweisberger began his career as a golf pro in South Dakota. He served two
years at Michell, several at Chamberlain and then spent seven years at Elmwood
course in Sioux Falls.
He came here in 1931 and directed Crystal Park course in South Sioux City. He
later was at Meadow Grove two times and at Happy Hollow course three different
times. In 1942, he was chosen as the professional at Morningside county Club,
where he served four years. He signed as pro at Storm Lake, Iowa, golf club in
1946.
Mr. Sweisberger was born March 31, 1888, in Englewood, N.J.
Survivors include the widow, Henrietta; three sons, Charles of Portland, Ore.,
George of South Sioux City and William of Sioux City; six daughters, Mrs.
Henrietta Quishenberry of Southwest City, Mo; Mrs. Margaret Boyle and Mrs. Helen
Boyle of Jackson, Neb; Mrs Dorothy Boyle of Willis, Neb; and Mrs Charlotte
Powell and Miss Joyce Elaine, both of Sioux City, and 15 grandchildren.
The Becker funeral service of South Sioux City has charge.
