PARTIAL LIST OF POLL TAX for DAWSON COUNTY, NEBRASKA
Submitted by LaDonna Frank Doughty, Lexington, NE
January 11, 1860, Dawson County, Nebraska was officially created. The boundaries were changed to the present shape when the county was formally organized in 1871. William H. James, acting Governor of the State of Nebraska, appointed Daniel Freeman, Register of Voters, to take effect the seventh of June 1871. An election was ordered to be held on Thursday, July 11, 1871, and James Delahunty, Richard O'Keefe, Otto Hansen were appointed as judges, and Edward Delahunty and John Kehoe as clerks.
The first election was held at Freeman's Store in Plum Creek; a total of thirteen votes were cast and the following county officers were elected:
J. W. DELAHUNTY, Commissioner Joseph SMITH, Commissioner Otto HANSEN, Commissioner Daniel FREEMAN, County Clerk and Superintendent of Schools Patrick DELAHUNTY, Treasurer John KEHOE, Sheriff Richard O'KEEFE, Probate Judge David MEEK, SurveyorPatrick GAFFNEY, Coroner.........Abstracted from the Dawson County Historical Society Newsletter, Vol.4 No.2, December, 1984 by LaDonna Doughty, Lexington, NE.
Dawson County Tax Assessor Books from the years 1872 to 1903; some for the years 1903 to 1906, are on file at the Dawson County Historical Museum. These are also on microfilm at the Nebraska State Archives, Lincoln, Nebraska. Tax Ledgers from 1906 to the present are on file in the Office of the Dawson County Assessor, Courthouse in Lexington.
Payment of a Poll Tax, or "head tax", in the amount of three dollars, was a prerequisite for voting. Many citizens paid the required tax, others, perhaps not as affluent, chose to work in lieu of payment. A search through the early Poll Tax books gives one a glimpse into the lives of these early pioneers, who settled on the Nebraska prairies, near the then "mile wide" Platte River.
