CornKing Corn finds soil conditions and environment very much to his majesty's liking in this section of Nebraska. With a silt loam and a sandy loam to provide him food, very efficient irrigation systems to give him all the drink he needs and plenty of sunshine to keep him warm and make him stretch, he provides his masters with a bumper crop annually. The elevation at this point is to his liking and with proper irrigation, which is perhaps able to be given with less labor and cost than most any place else in America, he will invariably give yields of from 60 to 80 bushels per acre. The great majority of corn in this region is listed, making cultivation an easier, faster and cheaper job. Irrigation is most generally done shortly after the corn is laid-by and one watering is sufficient to guarantee a big crop. It is not a proposition to pay a certain sum after the insured dies but rather a certain guarantee that the insured will live, thrive and produce wonderful and great dividends. The above photograph is the entire yield of 84 acres of land in a year when no supplementary water was needed. Along with Queen Alfalfa, King Corn provides the best balanced feed for fattening cattle and hogs that nature supplies. A country where King Corn and Queen Alfalfa occupy the throne can truly be called a Kingdom of Plenty -- such is the surrounding territory of the cities of Cozad and Gothenburg. |
AlfalfaFor many years Dawson County (in proportion to its area) has had the enviable reputation of leading the United States in the production of dry land alfalfa. The soil of the Platte Valley in this region seems especially well adapted to this wonderful plant. From early June to late September one can see the haying outfits busy in the large fields. Every year sees four heavy crops harvested and occasionally we have a season that permits cutting a fifth crop. The average production per year per acre of this Queen of all forage plants is about five tons. Once started and properly cared for it provides almost a permanent crop. Under irrigation the yield per acre is increased enormously. Considerable is fed annually to live stcck as winter forage, along with corn as a balanced fattening ration for feeding cattle and sheep and it also provides the best pasture known for hogs. The cities of Cozad and Gothenburg last year also shipped 2,429 cars of this wonderful product of the soil to market. Queen Alfalfa sits upon her purple throne and rules with a magic wand. She transforms a land of Promise into a land of Performance, and a land of Hope into a land of Homes. |
