BACKEMEIER, HAHNE posted by Gerhard Backemeier on Monday, May 19, 2003

Translation to above query:
Who can help me sort out my genealogy? The family name Backemeier apparently originates in the Landkreis Schaumburg Lippe, place: Frille, in what was then Westphalia. But I'm not 100% sure. Perhaps there is some information from this time. My father: Karl-Heinz, born 1935; my grandfather: Heinrich, born ? The names of all other ancestors are unfortunately not known. The only thing known for sure is that the family originated in Frille. Who can help me?

BRANDT, FRY posted by Karen Stanley on Sunday, June 8, 2003

This is a LAND question. My ancestor Isaac Minor FRY lived in Dawson County from approximately 1885 (when he married Lula Addie BRANDT in Cozad) to 1891 (when the marriage ended). The 1890-91 Farmers Directory shows him in Willow Island. Family lore says that he "took a homestead" but if so, he did not prove up on the land. Were homesteads still available in that area in the late 1880s, or would he have purchased the land from an earlier landholder? I am trying to figure out where the land records would be. If anyone is willing to check the records for me, I am interested in trading research as I have access to a major genealogical research collection.

O'KANE posted by Kathleen Waters on Friday, June 20, 2003

Noticed you have two listing for the surname O'Kane who married in Dawson County. How would I go about finding out whether or not either of these individuals actually still reside in the Dawson area? Or were they there for a short duration because of WWII? My maiden surname was O'Kane and oral history has it that some of my Father's cousins and/or one of his brothers went out west for awhile. I'm wondering if John K O'Kane (John Kevin O'Kane?) who married Catherine M Harnan could possibly be my uncle and aunt? I know Catherine was from Arkansas. How they met was never passed on, since John was born in Scotland, migrated with his Mother, Rose Sheehan, when he was around 1 or 2 years of age, lived most of his formative years MA, and then lived in RI for most of his adult life.
Sincerely, Kathleen
