Obituary:

JACOB STOUGH.

The death of Jacob Stough on Sunday morning, November 16, 1902, removes one of the pioneers and potent factors in the building of the city of Ponca.

Mr. Stough was born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1832, removed to Tuscarawas county, Ohio and in 1857 came to Ponca, having come by boat as far as Sioux City by way of St. Louis.

He took a homestead five miles west of Ponca, but after a few years moved into town. Here, in connection with his two older brothers, he helped to establish a saw mill, a grist mill, a large mercantile establishment and a bank. He has always been prominent in the affairs of this city. He was an ardent Christian and a very liberal supporter of the Lutheran church of this place.

Mr. Stough was married in 1870 to Miss Anna Scheffel. Two children blessed their home, Mrs. M. I. Mellon of this place and W. A. Stough of Bramen, Oklahoma.

Mr. Stough has been in failing health for about three years, heart disease being the cause of his sickness and death. The funeral was held at the Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock and was attended by a large concourse of people anxious to pay a last tribute of respect to the dead. Rev. Lipe conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Bray, after which the remains were laid to rest in the silent tomb.

Mr. Stough leaves a wife, two children, two grandchildren, two brothers and a sister at this place and two brothers and a sister in the East to mourn his death.
