Bapt 16 Dec 1807 Dover. According to Martha Isabella's letters, written late 1800s, Edward was named for an esteemed Admiral, Sir Edward Owen.
Md  St. George's Episcopal Church, Ramsgate, Kent Co.,  by Rev Richard Harvey, Jr.  (Church/Bible records)  He emigrated with his wife, small son in 1833 to NY State.  I've speculated Edward's mother may have remarried or died, releasing him  - the youngest/ last born---from any obligation to her.

He was a minister, active with the Methodist Wyoming Valley Conference, appearing in the large book of their clergy.  Where he was educated is not known. His list of churches changed regularly, the children being born in varying spots in central, southern tier, NY.

He, his wife, much of the family, is buried  Spring Forest Cem, Binghamton, NY.

Notes for MARY ANN ADKINS:  Already a minister's wife when they left England, one can only speculate about her life, thoughts, habits. She basically left home, family, known  surroundings  to travel to Binghamton, NY.   In later years, her  sister, Martha Adkins , joined them, living in the house hold until her death.

Marriage Notes for EDWARD BRECKINRIDGE and MARY ADKINS:  Marriage performed by Rev. Richard Harvey, Jr. (Bible record of Rev.Edw Wm Breckinridge.)

Notes for MARTHA ISABELLA BRECKINRIDGE:
Listed in parents household  early census--beginning 1850 when every name was listed on the US census. ---

By 1880,  is living/visiting with her sister, brother in law, Omaha, NE.  Redhaired, beautiful, a talented pianist, she appears to have been the family historian and genealogist.   Her letters were stted to have been  voluminous, she corresponded both here and over seas with  kin, supposed kin,  statesmen, leaders and educators about the varying Breckinridge groups.  She spent a lot of words and time explaining their history, migrations,  the myths of some  "tales"---the truth of others.  She certainly had a tight grasp of who moved where with whom and when, usually why---

Clarence Breckinridge Odessa, NY visited with my Gt Uncle Bob in Binghamton,  with me, my children, in Warners, NY--early 70s-we also went to his home.  He showed me copies of her letters to Sen James Breckinridge of KY---the originals of which are housed at University of Virginia.

Supposedly her papers took up an entire room. In several instances of her writings, she refers to/ mentions  her files, books, papers, etc.  Would love to know what happened to them.  I would have thought I'd died and gone to heaven to sit and visit with HER!

ix. ROBERT NEWTON BRECKINRIDGE, b. 02 Sep 1846, Brookfield, Madison Co., NY; d. 1847, Bainbridge, NY.

2.  HENRY ADKINS6 BRECKINRIDGE (EDWARD WILLIAM (REV)5, MICHAEL4, ROBERT3, ROBERT2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born 26 Feb 1832 Ramsgate, Kent Co., Eng, and died 23 Mar 1913 in Binghamton, NY.  He married (1) LUCY ANN GATES 01 Aug 1862 in Binghamton, Broome Co., NY, daughter of STEPHEN GATES and SARAH DRAPER.  She was born 23 Feb 1831 in Wayne Co., PA, and died 05 May 1878 in Binghamton, NY.  He married (2) LYDIA JANE MAPLE(S) 21 Dec 1881 in Newark Valley, NY.  She was born 13 Jan 1835 in Berkshire, Tioga Co., NY, and died 1917 in Broome Co., NY.

Notes for HENRY ADKINS BRECKINRIDGE:
The Breckinridge Bible, given Henry on his wedding day to Lucy Ann Gates, by his parents. -  (NY American Bible Soc 1862) states marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. E./W..... Breckinridge at the residence of Rev. F.L. Hiller.

Henry was a printer/engraver by trade, an educated man, little personal information has surfaced to date.

Notes for LUCY ANN GATES:    It dawned on me while working on the data input---Lucy didn't marry until she was 31---quite late for the era she lived in.  She had her children beginning in/well into her 30s, early 40s--the last one born when she was 44.

Nothing survived abt Lucy Ann--not even a photo, to my knowledge.  I have her gold  locket, there are faded tiny ovals inside that were Henry and Lucy---but not enough left for a restoration specialist to work with.  Somewhere there are probably the large photos  they were taken from, who has them isn't known.

Lisle (NY) Methodist Church records: 1856-1886''p. 70  Henry A., Lucy A. Breckinridge  are both listed on the 1870 membership list--the remark states:  "removed".

Bible pages of Edward William, son, Henry Adkins, give Lucy's birth yr. as 1833.

Notes for LYDIA JANE MAPLE(S):  Marriage ceremony performed by Rev. E.W. Breckinridge, assisted by Rev. Jay Elizbee.

It was distributed by the executor of the estate, to my mother, it appears, but I didn't  know of it until  lately (2006)

6.  ARTHUR GATES7 BRECKINRIDGE (HENRY ADKINS6, EDWARD WILLIAM (REV)5, MICHAEL4, ROBERT3, ROBERT2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born 06 Aug 1864 in Binghamton, Broome Co., NY, and died 10 May 1940 in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., CO.  He married EFFIE EDITH NOXON 11 Feb 1889 in Berkshire, Tioga Co., NY, daughter of LAWEN NOXON and FRANCES HAIGHT.  She was born 28 Aug 1867 in Speedsville, Tompkins Co., NY, and died 02 Aug 1945 in Austerlitz, Putnam Co., NY.

Notes for ARTHUR GATES BRECKINRIDGE:   Reputedly one of the first Journalism graduates of Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.  He was, for a time,  according to the journal of his mother in law,  a teacher. He  worked  for the Syracuse Herald - later the Syracuse Herald Journal - necessitating the family live in Syracuse.
On their return to Binghamton, Arthur worked for the old Binghamton Sun.  That didn't work out  well, he was, according to family lore, memory, considered "too liberal" and "socialist" in his views, writings, eventually moved to Staten Island, NY where he worked, wrote.

He was courtly, a "perfect gentleman",  great admirer of the ladies.  He wrote essays, poetry for all occasions, some of which have survived til now, as have numerous letters he wrote varying family members.   They show him to have been mannerly, complimentary, concerned, quick to give praise, gentle advice.  Even his  admonishments were couched in kind words, always supportive.
He obviously made excellent money--even during the 30s. It was his funds that supported/ helped support, his daughter, Margurite, her husband and daughters.  He paid often  for his other children, their famiies, also contributed greatly to the well being of his sisters, his nephew, Edward Graham.  The house up on Ross Park Dr, referred to as "Airy acres" was purchased by him,  put in the name of his wife,Effie.
When Arthur retired, he was not allowed to come home. (the  exact circumstances have not surfaced  - there was no scandal--the journal of Bertha Haight Noxen clearly shows it was  a marraige performed instantly due to her "death bed wish" which may have had some bearing once the children were out and on their own? (Bertha actually lived  into her 90s--however!) so,  it remains somewhat of a mystery/matter of  speculation..
Having read his letters, known how much he did for all his beloved family, the great joy he took in being with, socializing  among--them, I , personally wonder at the isolation in which he spent  the end of his life.
Arthur  went to the Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs, where he died.  His son, Bob,  brought him home, and he is buried in Spring Forest Cemetery with the rest of the Breckinridges.

Notes for EFFIE EDITH NOXON:
A tiny lady, with a lovely, but sad, face.  According to her mother's journal, she was a school teacher, only friends with the often visiting "Mr. B"--whose sisters  also visited at length in the Noxon home. It did appear "Mr B" was more interested in pretty Effie than the other way around.

She was a talented artist-many of her hand painted china, collectibles in the hands of her gt. grand daughter.---she was an adept seamstress, making her own clothes, dresses for her much younger sister, May.  She seemed to be active, out and about with, her friends, colleagues, and a caring daughter. sister. Her only granddaughters spent  many summers, vacations with her in Binghamton, but I never heard anything about the relationship between Effie, her own daughters.

I remember the house up on the hill--the wide porch that overlooked  a large portion of Binghamton NY. The yard was huge, dropped off sharply into a small ravine, where Effie (Gt. Grandma B)

iii. LEONORA BRECKINRIDGE MACDIARMID, b. Feb 1919, Cook Co., IL.

Generation No. 4

13.  MARGURITE8 BRECKINRIDGE (ARTHUR GATES7, HENRY ADKINS6, EDWARD WILLIAM (REV)5, MICHAEL4, ROBERT3, ROBERT2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born 20 Sep 1890 in Binghamton, Broome Co., NY, and died 07 Mar 1939 in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY.  She married RAY HOPKINS KELLAM 24 Mar 1910 in Ithaca Tompkins Co., NY, son of TIMOTHY KELLAM and CORA HOPKINS.  He was born 02 Jan 1889 in Binghamton, Broome Co., NY, and died 27 May 1955 in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY -  bur Plains Cem, Ceperley Ave.

Notes for MARGURITE BRECKINRIDGE:
Marguerite was educated in Binghamton schools, attended College in Itha ca.  She was a classically trained pianist, considered very talented from letters, notes written by others. How she met Ray Kellam has not been learned, perhaps at a college function.  The families didn't know one another, moving in totally different circles.  Diaries and letters, cards,  in the possession of the family, now owned by the author, outline the "pinning" which occurred while Ray was at college- an accepted/ traditional practice. Pictures indicate they had a variety of friends, occasions to attend. Everything about the marriage was executed in secrecy by Margurite's maternal grandmother.(Bertha Haight Noxon) Their license, the ceremony, occurred under her  direction, none of the family was aware, or present.  Both were from  relatively affluent families, educated-- what the problem might have been is speculation at this point.  In that era, students couldn't be married, as I understand it. Why put anything in jeopardy?

She was a phenomenal seamstress, artist, painted china, pretty and well dressed,  brilliant, educated,  beyond her time-- sadly, from photos, letters, she never appeared to be a happy woman.  She's buried at Plains Cemetery.

Sources:
Family info, letters, cards, notes, news clippings, knowledge of older people who had not known me, my immediate family closely over years due to some of the above. I am especially grateful to Dr. Carl Spear, his wife,Tillie,  who spent an entire day with me in Tulsa, Oklahoma--some 50 years after he had delivered me.  They had known my family since they were all in their twenties, thirties---and  very unexpectedly explained/ confirmed much of what I had come to believe/ know /find out. --   Burial: Plains Cemetery, Ceperley Ave.

Notes for RAY HOPKINS KELLAM:
Ray attended Binghamton schools, graduating from Binghamton Central High in the class of 1908.  He went on to Colgate University, Hamilton, New York, majoring in Architecture.  At Colgate, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and the Math Club.  Both he, Margurite, were students at the time of their marriage, unusual, not allowed, in those days.  Once Ray's parents learned of the marriage, they withdrew financial support. With the backing of the Breckinridge funds and contacts, Ray took his bride, moved to Spokane, Washington, where he did work as an architect.

He moved his family back east in November of 1914, staying briefly in Binghamton, New York, before going to Oneonta.   In later years he, his second wife, Helen, enjoyed traveling a great deal, entertaining quietly---visiting with friends. They went to most of the events at the Elks Club--had a circle of friends they  "went out" with.

He died after an extended illness--cancer, which attacked pancreas, liver.  It may well have been  the toxins he worked with so closely in R & D --not even made, let alone allowed-- in today's work environment--they could have impacted on him. No one before or since, in the family- had these  health problems.   He's buried with his first wife in Plains Cem, Oneonta's West End.

Notes for - JAMES WILLIAM (SR) SPENCER:
Raised by his father, Jim spent his childhood living in rooming houses. He attended Oneonta High School, until Judge Kellog scouted several of the guys for the school in Treadwell.  He bought them a car, and they drove to school over there.  The teams they played on, basketball, baseball, football, set records never broken in my memory.  Among his group was Ken Chase, who went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies, Kippy Lee, Louis Pondolfino, (Lou Pond--coached at Vestal, NY) . Jim played for the Farm teams, Yankees--was to be picked up--but--played football, broke his collarbone--badly-- as a pitcher and no sports medicine in those days, that was kind of -that.

He  worked for Cook Coffee Co., later went to work for the Delaware & Hudson RR, which took him to Binghamton, NY during WWII. Back in Oneonta by the late 1940s, he always played ball, bowled in championship leagues , was active with the Eagles Lodge, serving a couple terms as President. He kept up with the Yankee Farm team based in Oneonta, playing one of the Old Timer's games, hitting a 3 base hit off Bob Feller, former Cleveland Indians pitcher.  The summer he died, he threw out their first ball in June.   He was a life Member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT) which saw it's inception/signing, at the caboose now in Neawha Park, Oneonta
