Rose M. Korbelik

Rose Marie (Kucera) Korbelik was born on Feb. 10, 1911, in Milligan, to John F. and Celia E. Kucera. She passed away hours before her 85th birthday on Friday, Feb 9, 1996, at Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital.
Rose’s mother passed away when Rose was a young girl. Although circumstances made it impossible for her to finish high school, she never stopped learning, and her children and grand children knew she was the one to go to for "proof reading" a paper or help with a homework assignment.
Rose married Adolph R. Korbelik Oct. 16, 1930. In 1931, along with Adolph’s parents and his brothers, they moved to Kit Carson County. Vernetta Ann was born to this union, followed six years later by Harvey Lee, and six years after that came Patricia Jane.
Rose was active in organizations concerned with the affairs of the home, her children, the farm and the community. These included Green Valley 4-H club, Green Valley Extension Club, Kit Carson County Farm Bureau, the school, the hospital and the church.
Rose was a devoted wife and mother who always thought first about other people’s needs before herself. Times were very trying for a young married woman living with her in-laws before having her own home, and then again for some time after her first home was destroyed by fire—all of this during the dust bowl years of the dirty thirties. Hardships either destroy relationships or make them stronger, and for Rose and Adolph they made their marriage so strong it lasted until Adolph’s death in 1992, over 60 years.
When her family started expanding with marriages and grandchildren and later great-grandchildren, Rose was always the most happy when the family came to visit and for special family gatherings. She always prepared meals that were so delicious and so abundant that after everyone was filled to capacity there was still dessert to eat and , of course, enough leftovers for meals to come.
She was so wonderful about helping the young learn new things and always eager to teach someone to cook to can or to sew. Rose loved her family very deeply and was rewarded greatly by a return of that love many times over by not only her family, but by all who knew her. She was a true rose of beauty who will be missed greatly but who has gone to a more beautiful place in the r presence of God.
The family has lived southeast of Burlington in Kit Carson County since 1931. The family farm has had some good times and survived some hard times and is still operating as a family farm in the same area as it began over 60 years ago.
Vigil services were held Sunday, Feb. 11, with Father Henry Grodecki officiating. Granddaughter Susan Corliss led the gathered family and friends in saying the rosary.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Catherine Catholic Church on Monday, Feb.12. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Burlington. Father Hank officiated over the services. Musical selections were sung by the congregation. Paulette Ohnmacht was the organist.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adolph sister Angeline Slezak; brothers, Alois and John Kucera; granddaughter, Sharon’ and grandson, Korbelik.
She is survived by daughters, Vernetta Ann Mallet and Patricia Allaman and husband, Jim; son Harvey Korbelik and wife, Connie; granddaughters, Susan Corliss and husband, Russell, Terri Johnson and husband, Doug, Cindy Weaver and husband, Mike; grandson, Rick Mallet, Todd mallet and wife, Chrissy, Gary Mallet and wife, Lianne, Chris mallet, William Korbelik and wife, Tonya, David Korbelik, Monte Allaman and wife, Lisa; great-granddaughters, Heather Weaver, Sandra Corliss, Kaylee Korbelik; and great-grandsons, Justin Korbelik, Dustin and Clayton Corliss; and a soon expected great-grandchild; sisters, Helene Smith and husband, Phil, and Emma Koca, all of Lincoln; brothers-in-law, Arvil Korbelik of Santa Ana, Calif., Emil and wife, Mary of Burlington; sisters-in-law, Bessie Korbelik of Friend, Vi Kucera of Milligan; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.
Pallbearers were Rose’s grandsons and honorary escorts were her grand-daughters and great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions for the Kit Carson county Hospital may be left in Rose M. Korbelik’s name at the First National Bank of Lamar.
