Arthur Edward McDaniel, son of John Edward and Adeline Harvey McDaniel was born on June 22, 1920 at Laurel. He died Feb. 8,2000, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 16 days. He was the oldest of five children in the family. He was raised in the Laurel vicinity, moving several times until he was ten years old. The family lived in Wiggins, Colo. for a short time and then moved to Holt County area. Art finished his schooling in Neligh. He was baptized on April 14, 1957, in the California Junction First Presbyterian Church near Missouri Valley, Iowa. He later was a member of the United Methodist Church for several years and at the time of his death was a member of the Bethel Church of the Brethren near Carleton.

Arthur was in the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1936 until 1941. He also served in the United States Armed Services from September1941 until October 1945, serving his country overseas for nineteen months. During his stint in the service Art saw considerable serious action. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and other awards while in the European Theatre. In 1948, he re-enlisted in the Army Officer Training Command at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and was later discharged as a corporal. Art was proud to have served his country.

Arthur was married to Beulah Milne on Jan. 2, 1943 and to this marriage were born six children, Ellen Marie, Roger Dale, Donald Neal, Thomas Edward, Lois Jean and Shirley Beth. On August 26,1967, he married Lois Hoffert and they resided in Dorchester and later Friend. He worked at various jobs, and then they enjoyed RV'ing and traveling for seven years,, working at resorts and National Parks. They made their home in Carleton in 1987 and later do to failing health moved to Geneva.

Arthur was a loving, caring person with a unique sense of humor. Although not musical himself, he enjoyed music and had a huge collection of religious and Western records and tapes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Adeline McDaniel; by his brother, Marlyn; and brother-in-law, Malven Raff.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of Geneva; sons, Roger McDaniel of Plattsmouth, Donald McDaniel of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Tom McDaniel of Harlan, Iowa; daughters, Ellen Stull of Omaha, Jean Knapp of Carson, Iowa, and Shirley Delaschmutt of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Evelyn Milne of Creighton, Lucille Haskin of Royal and Leona Raff of Norfolk; by 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Feb.11, 2000, from the Bethel Church of the Brethren, near Carleton, with Rev. Jim Hubble and Rev. Dale Dowdy officiating. Sara Nippert accompanied Larry Nippert who sang "The 23rd Psalm".

Casket bearers were: Doug Smith, Hubert Miller, Norman Walker, Max Dowdy, DeRoy Miller, Bob Enghauser and Richard Tritt.

Interment with military honors by the Carleton American Legion Post No.329 was held at the Bethel Cemetery with arrangements in charge of Farmer & Son Funeral Home. Memorials are directed to the Bethel Church Cemetery Fund.
