Exeter

Exeter is a prosperous town in the northeastern part of Fillmore county and 12 miles from Geneva, the county seat. It is located on the main line of the B & M RR and the Superior branch of the F E & MVRR, 47 miles from Lincoln and 50 miles from Hastings and has a population of 1600. The surrounding country is thickly settled by a thrifty farming population, and extensive shipments of both grain and live stock are made from this point. There are three grain elevators in constant operation, and several flour mills in the neighborhood. Among the business enterprises are a canning factory, a nursery, a brickmanufactory, etc. The First National Bank, capital $100,000 and The Exeter National Bank, capital $50,000, have the confidence of the business circles. The churches here represented are Baptist, Christian, Congregational, Catholic and Methodist. Societies: GAR, IOGT, AOUW, IOOF and D of R. The Exeter Enterprise, the oldest, is one of the largest country newspapers in the state. Money order office and daily mail.
