Leonard Carl Folkerts was born to Carl Jansen Folkerts and Amelia (Remmers) Folkerts on April 29, 1928, at the Beatrice Hospital in Beatrice, and passed away unexpectedly Jan. 14, 1997, at his winter home in chandler, Ariz. at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 16 days.  He was an only child.

Leonard was baptized June 3, 1928, at the Lutheran Parsonage at Carleton.  He lived on a farm near Carleton with his parents until the death of his father on march 1, 1929.  At the age of 10 1/2 months he and his mother moved to Garrison to be near her family.  In May of 1934, his mother married George Eden of Bruning.  Leonard, at the age of 6 years, moved to the farm where he resided for 62 years.

He attended Trinity Lutheran Church and was confirmed in 1943.  He attended Prairie Plains Country School through the eighth grade and then attended Bruning Public Schools, graduating in 1945.  After graduation he remained on the farm making farming his lifelong occupation.

Leonard took great pride in learning to fly, and obtained his pilot license at Flying Hawks Ranch.  His special interests were fishing, golfing, and working in his shop.  He greatly enjoyed feeding cattle.  He took great pride and joy in his grandchildren.

Leonard was married to Delores Anne Gerard of Strang on Aug. 10, 1952 and to them four children were born.

Leonard served on the Bruning Public School Board for nine years, serving as president and treasurer. He and hi wife, Delores, began spending the winter month in Chandler, Ariz. in 1976, and enjoyed meeting many new friends and visiting with them.

Leonard was preceded in death by his father and mother, Carl and Amelia Folkerts; and by his stepfather, George Eden.

He is survived by his wife, Delores of Bruning; son, Alan and wife Sheri of Bruning; daughter Linda (Bob) Hansen of Emporia, Kan., and Joann Folkerts of Bruning; six grandchildren Benjamin and Brian Hansen, Emily Folkerts and Shauna Bruning and Andrew and Jillian Folkerts.

Funeral services were conducted from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning on Monday, Jan. 20, with Pastor Vern Barlow officiating.

Janice Fintel accompanied Betty Edzards who sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Wayne Bowman, Herb Bruning, Larry Hinrichs, Mark Hinrichs, Tom Kerl and Wilbur Mammen.

Interment was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Farmer & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
