William Molthan, Sr. donated five acres for the church. It was 0.5 miles west and 2 miles south of Ohiowa, NE. The church was dedicated on 18 May 1888 and was called St. John's German Lutheran Church. In 1917 a new church building was erected and was dedicated on 06 Aug 1917.
From the time the church was started until 1945, the services at this church were conducted in German In 1945, the services were conducted in English. They also decided to drop the word German from the name of the church so it was known as St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1954, the church was re-organized and became the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.
