Grafton, Nebraska

The Nebraska Signal, January 1916

(Transcribed by Great Grand-daughter, Linda Masters)

Mrs. Lucy J. Cole passed away at her home in Grafton Tuesday morning January 11, 1916, at 3:20 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks.      Mrs. Cole was born at Union Mills, N. Y.      Her age at the time of her death was 84 years and 8 months.

September 1, 1851, she was married to Fones Cole who preceded her in death a number of years.    Mr. Cole was a soldier in the Civil War, having served in Company I, Twentieth Iowa Volunteers.

Mrs. Cole is survived by a brother, a sister and a son, Xerxes C. Cole of Grafton.     A son, Riley V. Cole and a daughter, Mrs. Dora Keepers, died some years ago.

Mrs. Cole came with her family to Grafton forty-four years ago and has resided here since that time.     She is therefore ranked among the first pioneers of Fillmore County.    Several years ago she, with her son, left their farm south of town and came to Grafton to live.    Despite her advance age, Mrs. Cole was a very active woman until a short time before her death, which terminated an illness of much suffering.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Congregational church and will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. T. J. Brown.     The remains will be laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Grafton cemetery
