Engel Buthe Watermann

Engel Watermann nee Buethe (sic) was born on 15 Nov 1852 in Rolfshagen, Schaumberg, Germany. When 14 years old she united with the Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member until the last.

On December 26, 1872 she was united in holy marriage to Christian Watermann. This union was blessed with ten children, three sons and seven daughters. Two sons and one daughter in infancy, preceded their mother to the Better Land. On July 1, 1891 they left their homeland for North America coming directly to Ohiowa where they already had relatives.

Mrs. Watermann had been failing in health for almost a year and a few days before her death. She took suddenly worse on Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock. She passed this earthly life to the life beyond leaving her sorrowing husband, one son Henry and six daughters, Mrs. John Werner, Mrs. Charles Marquardt both of Campbell, NE; Mrs. William Franzen, Mrs. Herman Shafer of Callaway, NE; Mrs. Conrad Hofferber and Miss Emilie Watermann; 24 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

A short service was held at the house and the body was then taken to St. John’s Lutheran Church south of Ohiowa (note: Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church) of which she was a member. Rev. G. Klatt, her pastor, held the service. The body was placed in the cemetery beside the church. She reached 65 years, 5 months and 8 days.
