Garfield County was named after James A. Garfield (who had been assassinated earlier that year) and formed from Wheeler County in 1884. In 1885 Willows Springs was the county seat, until the railroad bypassed the city in favor of Burwell. In 1890 Burwell became the county seat. Garfield County is the home of Nebraska's largest outdoor rodeo, and Calamus Dam. The first newspaper was the Burwell Bell in 1885. Burwell remained a village until 1947, when it became a city.
