Services (if any) prior to Enlistment into 26th Regt: None"Geneva, Illinois -- A History of Its Times and Places" (pub. Geneva Public Library District, 1977) notes that among the town's early shoemakers were John, Frederick and Henry Carter, three brothers who came from England and "worked at the trade circa 1855 to 1876."
John Carter and his family moved to Iroquois County in the late 1860s, so apparently a brother or two remained in Kane County to carry on.
