Gosper County Men
World War I

(The Great War)

The following is an excerpt from The Elwood Bulletin, Thursday, June 14, 1917, pages 1 & 4.

Personnel of Those Registering In County

As reported last week 421 young men in Gosper County registered on Tuesday, June 5th, as being eligible for military service.  Two hundred and twenty-two have dependent relatives, five claimed total disability with a probably forty-five listed as exemptions.  As far as local authorities can ascertain not a "slacker" is to be found in the county.

Following is the number registered in each precinct. Highland 24; Union 24, Elk Creek 32, West Muddy 26, Lincoln 26, Turkey Creek 26, East Muddy 37, Harrison 55, Elwood 80, Robb 24, Bethel 38, Brace 29.

The total registration in the state as reported to the governor is 118,123, being about eleven thousand lower than the government estimate.  Of that number 74,596 are asking exemption.

It is expected by the Federal government at Washington that the total registration would be close to 9,000,000 in place of the ten and one-fourth million as put by the census experts.

Following is a complete list of those registering in ths county:

    All Men in Gosper County
    Must Register for Labor

                                 --------
Due to a late ruling coming
from the office of Provost Marsh-
al that all men must do work or
fight and due to the shortage of
labor in the agricultral countys
Tuesday, June 18th, has been des-
ignated by the State Council of
Defense as registration day for
Gosper county, when every male
person who has attained the age
of 16 years and who have reached
the age limit up to a hundred
must register.  The registration
is under the supervision of the
County Council of Defense and will
be handled by school districts.
   In the country districts the
hour for registration is set at
8 p. m. and in Elwood and Smith-
field at 7 p. m.  Supplies will
be in the hands of the school off-
icers in time for the registration.
While the boys are in France
licking the stuffing out of the
Huns it is up to us over here to
do a little military skirmishing
of our own in the harvest fields.
A military necessity, it must be
done.  The labor situation is
serious and what better can be
done than the business men in the
towns enlisting for farm work dur-
ing harvest.  Retired farmers and
the business man will be expected
to put in a few good licks in the
field each week.  In another
column we call attention to the
proclamation issued by the County
Council of Defense.  Read it and
do not forget to register on Tues-
day, June 18th.

continue on each day successively

ing Wednesday, the 26th day of

males were required to register.
