Paul Wilhelm Melchert and Maria Albertine Auguste Wendland were married February 11, 1904 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, located in Elk Creek Precinct south of Elwood and north of Arapahoe. Paul was the son of Friedrich Wilhelm August "Fritz" Melchert and his wife Bertha Schievelbein; he was born December 30, 1879 at Bell Creek (Arlington), Washington, Nebraska. The family moved, in about 1880, to Gosper County where Paul and his younger sister grew up. Maria, born September 27, 1882 in Germany, was the youngest child of Franz Fiederich August Wendland (called August) and his wife Friedericka Mues. The family immigrated to the U. S. soon after Maria's birth and settled in Gosper County. Paul and Maria had two sons and one daughter.
