DEATH CLAIMS MRS. HOWARD W. KIRKMAN
Sticken While Dancing and Dies Before Reaching the Hospital
Mrs. Hazel KIRKMAN, wife of Howard W. KIRKMAN, died suddenly shortly before midnight Friday. Death resulted from a heart attack. Mrs. KIRKMAN was stricken while dancing at a party of the Grand Island council of the United Commercial Travelers, held in the Masonic ballroom, and died while being taken to the Grand Island Luther hospital. Hazel SHILTS was born in Watertown, S. D., came to Grand Island in girlhood, graduated from the high school as a member of the class of '12 and for several years was employed by the Dolan Fruit company. She was always interested in community affairs, was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, a member of Andrew chapter, No. 41, Order of Eastern Star and the U. C. T. auxilliary. Miss SHILTS married Howard W. KIRKMAN in this city Dec. 24, 1919. Surviving are her husband, her aged step-father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. SAVAGE, and three sisters, Mrs. Grace DENMAN of Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. Ivy SIMPSON of Horse Shoe Bend, Ida., and Mrs. Prudence WYNNE of Glendale, Calif. The family residence is at 244 South Oak street. Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Geddes funeral home with burial in Grand Island cemetery. Friends may view the body from 7 to 9 o'clock Monday night at the funeral home.

ADOLPH KRUSE DIES AT 87
Adolph "Otto" Kruse, 87, a Hall County native, died Monday evening at a local hospital.
funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel of the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey Clark, pastor of the St. Paul's English Lutheran Church, officiating. Visiting hours will be Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Adolph Kruse, RFD 1, was born on a farm seven miles northwest of Grand Island, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kruse on Sept. 12, 1876. He grew to manhood here and attended the local schools. He was married to Kathern Kerns April 5, 1905, and they made their home on an adjoining farm and continued to live there for nearly 60 years. He was a farmer all his life, active until his retirement the last few years. He is survived by his wife, Kathern; one sister, Mary Kruse; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

MR. KROLL DIES AT 72
Bernard Kroll, co-manager of the Bauman Home, died unexpectedly Friday noon at a local hospital shortly after being admitted. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the chapel of the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. L. Paul Bowling, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation hours will be held Sunday evening from 7 - 9 at the Funeral Home. Bernard Kroll was born NOv. 13, 1890, at Nanticoke, Pa. He was reared on a farm near Effort, Pa., and grew to manhood there. He began his trade as an apprentice butcher and became associated with the American Stores Company. He became general superintendent in charge of the meat department for American Stores Co. He remained in this capacity until the late 1930's when he operated a general Foods Store in Allentown, Pa He married Miss Zdith Baliman at Philadelpia, Pa., Jan. 15, 1935. Mr. Kroll continued to operate his Foods Store until 1942. The family moved to Nebraska in 1945 from their home in Quakertown, Pa., settling on a farm near St. Libory. Mr. Kroll was active in the poultry business and worked for a number of years fo the Watkins Company as a representative. The family moved to Grand Island in 1958. Mr. Kroll and his wife became managers of Baumann Home Jan. 1, 1959, when the home was opened. He is a member of the First Baptist Church, Aslar Lodge 33 AF & AM and was a 32-degree mason. He is survuved by his wife Zdith; one son Richard, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and a daughter, Miss Louise Kroll, Bethlehem, Pa.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

John "Jack" W. Kissler, 56, of Cairo, died Friday, Feb. 2, 1996, in Lincoln. Services were Tuesday at the Cairo United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Davis officiation. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo. Memorials are suggested to the Cairo Senior Response Team or Cairo Senior Citizens Center. Mr. Kissler was born on March 20, 1939, in Lincoln to John and Alvena (Gettman) Kissler. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1957 and from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1962. He married his wife in 1961, in Cairo. The couple moved to Cairo in 1972. He received his master's degree from South Dakota State University in Brookings in 1970. He was an officer in the United States Army from 1962 to 1972, serving in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He was a major when he was discharged. He also received the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. He was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church and the Iszaak Walton League. He enjoyed Nebraska athletics and belonged to the Booster Club. He was an avid collector of University of Nebraska and World War II memorabilia. For many years and at the time of his death, he was a sales representative for Van Guard Industries of Colon, Michigan. Survivors include his wife; two sons of Boise, Idaho and of Grand Island; one daughter of Minnespolis, Minn.; one granddaughter; and one sister of Placentia, Calif.. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mae C. Kluge, 86, of Cairo died Saturday, August 15, 1986. Services were Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Lew Kaye Skinner officiated. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo. Visitation was Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo. Memorials were suggested to the church or the donor's choice. Mrs. Kluge was born August 18, 1899, at Bigelow, Kansas, the daughter of Francis and Rosetta Miller Alderman. They moved to Cairo when she was 9, and she grew up and received her education in the Cairo area. In 1917 she married Frank Riedy. He died in 1938. In 1940 she married George Kluge at Wayne. They farmed in the Cameron township area before moving into Cairo in 1970. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Royal Neighbors of America, and the Cairo Senior Citizens group. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Elmer Riedy of Cairo and Donald Kluge of Gretna; two brothers, James Aldermand of Eugene, Oregon and Calvin of Brayford, Minn.; a sister, Bertha Austin of Julesburg, Colol, five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jack Riedy; three brothers, Floyd, Arthur, and Roger Alderman, and two sisters, Agnes Wahl and Frances Vigneaux.

Eddie P. Krolikowski, 72, of Wood River died Wednesday, April 6 (1986) at Grand Island. Service were Monday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. Robert Wiest officiated. Burial was in Ft. McPherson Nathional Cemetery at Maxwell. Visitation was Sunday from 5-8 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River with a rosary at 7 p.m. Memorals were suggested to the church or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Krolikowski was born September 23, 1913, at Ashton, the son of Peter and Maggie Klos Krolikowski. He attended school at Ashton. After completing his education, he was engeged in construction work. In July 1941, he sentered the U.S. Army, serving with the 155th Infantry in the Philippines and in the Ryukys campaign. He was discharged in December, 1945. After his discharge, he worked on constructing the VA Medical Center in Grand Island. He then began farming in the Cairo area, retiring in 1980 and moving th Wood River. He was a member of St. Mary's parish and American Legion Post No. 314, both in Wood River. Survivors include a son, of Central City; a grandson; three sisters, of Grand Island, and of Muncie, Ind., and three brothers of Wood River and of Lincoln. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Irene A. Koehler, 95, of Grand Island died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at her home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the church. Mrs. Koehler was born on July 20, 1902, at Shelby, Iowa, to G. Adolph and Jessie Luella (Clark) Lenz. She lived in Hastings as well as Idaho, Sutherland, Ore., and Brickton. She moved to Grand Island with her family in 1917. She was a graduate of the Grand Island Business College. She married Arnhold O. Koehler on June 5, 1920, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. She worked as a secretary for the Donald Co. for three years and then stayed home to care for her family. Mr. Koehler died on July 16, 1969. Mrs. Koehler was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the women's society. Survivors include two daughters, Vivian Jensen of St. Libory and Genevieve Forbes of Boulder Colo.; one son, Kenneth of Newport Richey, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dolores Lindsay; two brothers and one sister.

Wilbur "Heinie" V. Kutschkau, 82, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at his home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Denton Jantzi will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Mr. Kutschkau was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Hamilton County. He grew up in the Phillips area and graduated from Phillips High School in 1933. He married Ione M. Hanover in 1943 in Grand Island. Mrs. Kutschkau died on Feb. 13, 1964. Mr. Kutschkau worked for the U.S. Postal Service until he was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in the army until 1945. Following his military service, he returned to Grand Island and did carpentry work and auto body repair until 1948, when he returned to the postal service. He retired from the postal service in 1973. He was a member of the Eagles, VFW and the Platt-Duetsche. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and horse racing. Survivors include one son, David of Grand Island; two daughters, Wanda Runge of Grand Island and Karen Wetzel of Albany, Ore.; two brothers, Orvis of Washington and Melvin of Fullerton; two sisters, Eloise Sherry of Grand Island and Betty Vlasek of Lincoln; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy and Donald.

Shelby -- Minnie M. Kobza, 83, of Shelby died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at St. Joseph's Villa in David City. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with the Rev. John Copenhaver officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary, Sunday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's Villa in David City. Mrs. Kobza was born on April 20, 1914, at Bruno to Edward and Clotilda (Koza) Hlavac. She grew up in Butler County and attended rural schools. He married Sylvester Kobza on June 19, 1944, at Bruno. The couple lived in rural Shelby, where they farmed. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include three sons, Sylvester J. of Ridgefield, Wash., Dan of Grand Island and David of Lincoln; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Edward Hlavac of Downey, Calif.; and one sister, Celstine Roh of Omaha. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Kemper was bom Aug. 25,1907, at Wisner to Chris and Anna (Baehr) Stauflcr. She was educated in Wisner. She married Bcrnhard T. Kemper on March 17, 1934, in Wisner. The couple lived in Pilger and Stanlon before moving to Grand Island in 1943. Mr. Kemper died in 1972. Mrs. Kcmpcr lived at the l.ebensraum Retirement Home from 1988 to 1994. and then she moved to Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center. Clarence I.. Karsten, 76, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 1 1 am. Monday, with a family prayer service at 10:45 am. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Burial will be at 2 pm. Monday in the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm. Sunday. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 pm. at Apfel-ButlcrvGeddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Mr. Karsten was born July 8, 1922, in Loomis to Louis and Emma (Haeffner) Karsten. He grew up and attended school in Elm Creek. He entered the US Army on Oct. 16, 1942. serving during World War II and receiving a Bronze Star medal. He was discharged on Oct. 13, 1945. He married Grace G. Loschen on Aug. 13. 1943, in Lexington. The couple lived in the Keamey, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1971, they moved to Grand Island, and he continued to work for the Union Pacific Railroad until he retired in 1982 after 41 years. He then began working for Apfel- Butler—Geddes Funeral Home and retired in 1996. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 759 of Kearney and the American Legion Post No. 53 of Grand Island. He was a member of the Union Pacific Old Timers, of which he was past president, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks and the Plan-Duetsche. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Maxine (Mrs. Ron) Erpelding of Gibbon and Beth (Mrs. Larry) Janecek of Gering; one son, Rod Karsten of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Elizabeth Smith of Bertrand, Florence Montgomery of Norfolk, Lila Rishel of Gothenburg and Fern Karstcn of Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Albert, Herman and Walter; and two sisters, Edna Hayward and Mabel Hemstrom.

Louise B. Kully. 89, of 2419 W. Anna died Thursday. Jan. 8, I998, at Community Care of America. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Cantor Erik Contzius will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Mrs. Kully was born on Aug. 26. I908, in Grand Island to Max and Flora (Gretz) Greenberger. She grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island High School in I926. She attended business college in Omaha and worked for Brandeis Department Stores. She married Stan Kully on March I7, I935. in Grand Island. She assisted her husband at Greenberger's clothing. Mr. Kully died in April I997. Mrs. Kully was a member of 'I‘iffereth Israel Synagogue in Lincoln, Andrew Chapter 41 of the Order ofthe Eastern Star and the Does. Survivors include one son, Mike Kully ofGrand Island; one daughter, Sandra Freed of Omaha; and five grandchildren. Besides her husband. she was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Sarah Frances; and one sister. Miriam Abrams.
