LAST RITES HELD FOR WILLIAM H. THOMPSON
Former Senator Praised as an Ideal Citizen and Trusted Servant.
GRAND ISLAND. (AP). Simple but impressive services were held here Tuesday for William H. Thompson, 83, former U. S. senator and Nebraska supreme court justice who died at his home here Sunday. Rev. Glen L. Rice, pastor of the First Presbyterian church was charge. Many men prominent in state politics, including Governor Cochran and former Governor Bryan, were among the honorary pallbearers. Rev. Mr. Rice characterized Thompson as "a representative ideal American citizen, a useful and faithful servant of his country. To see him passing down the street, so erect, so dignified and yet so kindly was to know why he was held in such great respect." Mr. Rice said. Honorary pallbearers included in addition to Governor Cochran and Mr. Bryan, the following:

TRAVIS FUNERAL RITES TUESDAY
Funeral services for Mrs. Maude TRAVIS, life-time resident of the Alda community, will be held at ten o'l\clock Tuesday morning in the Friends church at Alda. Rev. JOHNSON, Wood River, will conduct the rites and burial will be in the family plot in Alda cemetery. Death, which occurred at her lome Saturday morning, was caused by a heart attack. Maude May RICHARDSON, daughter of Darias and Emma RICHARDSON, was born Apr. 18, 1876, at Alda, attended the district school and grew to womanhood on the family farm. She married John C. TRAVIS Jan. 8, 1896, and since had resided at the Alda hotel, operated by her husband until his death June 20, 1924. She was a member of he Ladies Aid and the Alda Cemetery association. Surviving are a son, Herman TRAVIS, at Burns, Wyo.; a daughter, Mrs. Edwin MADISON of Polk and four grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers and a sister also preceded her in death. Friends may view the body from 7 to 9 o'clock tonight at the Livingston-Sondermann funeral home.

FRIENDS THRONG CATHEDRAL FOR TORPEY RITES
Relatives and Friends from Forty States Attend Services Here
Funeral services for John (Jack) TORPEY, widely known livestock commission man who succumbed to a heart attack Monday morning, were held at nine o'clock this morning at St. Mary's cathedral. Relatives and friends from approximately 40 states paid their respects. Floral expressions reflected the scope of his friendships. Msgr. A. W. HELMES was celebrant of the solemn requiem high mass. He was assisted by the cathedral choir. Father Leo KEATING was in charge of he service at the grave in the Grand Island cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. W. J. MOSLANDER, E. P. RYAN, Dr. J. E. Geraldine J. Thomsen, 53, of St. Paul died Tuesday, February 4 in a Grand Island hospital. Services were Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Mason officaited. Burial was in the St. Paul Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday afternoon and evening at Jacobsen Mortuary in St. Paul. Memorials were suggested to the Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Mrs. Thomsen was born January 1, 1933 at Grand Island to Robert and Esther Orndoff Dickey. She attended District #37 school in Hall County and junior and senior high school at Whittier, Calif., graduating in 1950. She returned to Hall County and worked in the office of Ulry-Talbert, and then at the Overland National Bank until 1953. On October 18, 1953, she married Merle Thomsen. They made their home and farmed north of St. Paul. Mrs. Thomsen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of St. Paul. Survivors include her husband, Merle; two daughters, of Grand Island and Wilcox; two sons, of St. Paul and of Grand Island; her parents, of St. Paul; three grandchildren; a brother and wife, of Brady; one nephew of Las Vegas, Nev.; one aunt of Cairo; and one cousin of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

ALDA ‹ Fern I. Tibbs, 58, of Alda died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at her home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Roland Going will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. She was born on May 21, 1939, at Grand Island to Elmer and Irene (Florke) Tibbs. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1958. She later worked at Bullet Weights in Alda for 13 years and was a home health care provider. She was a member of the Lutheran faith and enjoyed gardening and her cat. Survivors include a son, Brian Knefelkamp of Aurora; two daughters, Debra Martin of Harvey, N.D., and Pamela Harders of Alda; six grandchildren; her mother, of Wood River; three sisters, Joyce Andersen, Beverly Solliday and Shirley Hernoud, all of Lincoln; and one brother, Lyle Tibbs of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister, Phyllis.

COLUMBUS -- Wilber Elmer Thomazin, 84, of Columbus, formerly of St. Edward, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Edward Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Gill will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Edward Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward. Visitation will continue after 7 p.m. at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. wake service. Visitation will resume from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Thomazin was born on Feb. 12, 1913, in Burrows Township north of Monroe to Thomas R. and Frieda (Albers) Thomazin. He was educated at Postville District 31 and Platte County District 68 schools and attended St. Edward High School. He married Kathryn Koerber on June 1, 1939, in Genoa. They lived in the Woodville and Big Cut communities between St. Edward and Genoa throughout their marriage. He was a farmer. Mrs. Thomazin died on March 19, 1994. Mr. Thomazin had lived at the Columbus Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit since February 1996. He was a longtime member of the St. Edward Catholic Church. He served as a board member of both Big Cut School District 12 in Nance County and the St. Edward Rural Fire Department. Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen (Mrs. Kenneth) Johnson of Columbus and Ann (Mrs. Rob) Johnson of Olympia, Wash.; two sons, Kenneth Thomazin of Sacramento, Calif., and Max Thomazin of Genoa; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Glenn; and three sisters, Mildred Werts, Lola Iverson and Cleo Nauenberg.

Young America, Minn. -- Florence Eureka Troester, 88, of Young America, Minn., formerly of Hampton, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at Glencoe, Minn. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. George Damm will officiate. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. Mrs. Troester was born on May 27, 1909, at Columbia, S.D., to Charles and Anna (Yeske) Zastrow. She grew up and attended high school at Columbia. She later attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward for two years. She taught in country schools for three years, including at Salem School near Hampton and two years at Wayne. She married Walter Troester on Aug. 7, 1933, at Columbia. They farmed near Hampton. They moved into Hampton after a tornado in 1964. Mr. Troester died on Dec. 28, 1991. Mrs. Troester had lived between Lakewood, Colo., and Young America, Minn., with her family for the past six years. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn (Mrs. Robert) Durbin of Young America, Minn., and Laures Runnels of Lakewood, Colo.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Ida Matthies of Dearborn, Mich. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

ARVADA, Colo. —- Dale R. Tofi, 67, of Arvada, Colo., died Nov. 30, 1997. Memorial services were on Dec. 3. Mr. Tofi was born on Sept. 30, 1930, in Omaha to Einor and Marie Toft, longtime teachers in Grand Island. Mr. Tot‘t graduated from Grand Island High School, where he was an outstanding athlete, eSpecially in basketball. He worked as a teacher, coach and administrator in Jefferson County schools. Survivors include his wife, Sue Schiff; two sons, Bob and Rich, both of the Denver area; a daughter, Judy Kinncar of the Denver area; a stepson, Mark of Arvada; a stepdaughter, Kate of Arvada; four grandchildren; and a brother Jim of Jefferson City, Mo.

LINCOLN -- George R. Thiel, 77. of Lincoln died Saturday. March 27, 1999. at his home. Private burial of cremains will be on Friday in Lincoln. There will be no visitation. Roper and Sons Mortuary of Lincoln is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Thiel was born on May 3, I921 . at Overton to Dwight and Fannie (Cross) Thiel. The family later moved to Grand Island. He was a World War ll veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He married Delores White on Nov. IO. 1946. at Mankato. Kan. They lived in South Sioux City, where he was a contractor. They later moved to Lincoln, where he worked as a construction coordinator. Survivors include two sons, Mike and Bruce, both of Lincoln; four grandchildren; three brothers, Karl of Grand Island, Dwight of Manteca, Calif.. and Jack of Des Moines, Iowa; and two sisters. Patricia Stratman of Gothenburg and Vera Jar-zynka of Yuba City, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Alfred and Frank; and four sisters. Leona O'Brien, Bonnibel Juzek, Leith O'Brien and Winifred Nelson.
