VERN VATH VETERAN OF BOTH WORLD WARS DIES HERE

Vern E. Vath, 66, of 716 E. 15th, died this morning in a Grand Island hospital. He had been seriously ill for about two months. Mr. Vath had resided in Grand Island about a year, moving here from Los Angeles, Calif. Survivors include his wife, Mildred. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. The Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home will be in charge.

SERVICES THURSDAY FOR VERN VATH

Services fro Verne W. Vath, 66, veteran of both world wars who died Monday morning in a local hopital, will be observed at 1:30 Thursday afternoon in the chapel of the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Friends may call from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Burial is to be in Grand Island cemetery. Verne W. Vath was born March 12, 1897, at Shelton, the son of Conrad and Lilly Smith Vath. He received his schooling ner Shelton and enlisted in teh armed forces. He served his country in World War I and World War II, and was discharged on June 11, 1943. Following his discharge he worked at the Kearney Air Base as a mechanic until 1951 when he and Mrs. Vath went to Los Angeles, Calif. In June, 1962, they came to Grand Island. He and Mildred Clancy were married Jan. 14, 1949, at Kearney. He is survived by his wife; three step-sons, Harold Clancy of Grand Island, James Clancy, Sisseton, S. D., and Robert Clancy, Kearney; one step-daughter, Mrs. Richard Loidalt, Minneapolis, Minn.; three brothers, A. O. Vath, Juniata, Ralph Vath of Kearney and Harry Vath of Grand Island; and 21 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.

SERVICES HELD FOR VERNE VATH

Funeral rites for Verne W. Vath, veteran of both world wars, were conducted Thursday afternoon in the chapel of the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home by Dr. Laurence Davis, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. Francis Purdy played hymns and the prelude and recessional.
Pallbearers were Gust Kallos, Harold Phelan, J. D. Hansen and John Maulsby. Members of American Legion Post 63 conducted military rites a the graveside. Francis Purdy sounded taps. Present at the rites from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Vath, Juniata, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clancy, Kearney.

Winifred Vierk

Winifred R. Vierk, 74, of Cairo died Monday, March 10 (1986) at Grand Island after a brief illness. Services were Friday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Lawrence Fenton officiated. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo. Visitation was Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo with a rosary at 7:30. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Mrs. Vierk was born December 6, 1911, on a farm southeast of Cairo, the daughter of James and Bertha Brandt Donigan. She grew up in the Cairo and Grand Island area and received her educaton in rural schools. On February 3, 1947, she married Glen Vierk. They farmed southwest of Cairo until 1970, when he died. After his death, she moved into town. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament parish at Grand Island. Survivors include two sons, Jack and Paul, both of Cairo; two daughters, Mrs. Julie Bernt of Arlington, Va., and Janice Vierk of Omaha; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Vince Donigan of Omaha and James of Portland, Ore., and a sister, Mary Billesback of Sun Valley, Calif.

Franklin Vogel

CAIRO -- Franklin V. Vogel, 67, of Cairo died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at his home in Cairo. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cameron Cemetery. The Rev. Eldon Elsberry will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Cairo. Mr. Vogel was born Sept. 25, 1930, to Everett and Ruby (Dubbs) Vogel in Wood River. He attended school in Wood River and graduated from Wood River High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1953. He married Phyllis Lemburg on May 27, 1955, in Grand Island. They lived in Cairo until 1959, when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. He worked for the city there, constructing and maintaining the Summit House on Pikes Peak. The couple moved back to Cairo to resume his business as owner and operator of Vogel Salvage in 1959. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cairo. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas of Grand Island and Ty of Cairo; two daughters, Jane Schipman and Kay Fielding, both of Grand Island; seven grandchildren and three sisters, Ramona Hadenfeldt of Fort Collins, Colo, Merna Hoage of Austin, Texas and Cheryl Tyler of Wood River. He was preceded in death by two grandsons.

Pearl VanWinkle

CAIRO -- Pearl A. VanWinkle, 99, of Cairo died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cairo United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo. Memorials are suggested to the church. Mrs. VanWinkle was born on June 1, 1898, at the Klinkacek homestead in Buffalo County to Frank and Josefa (Jarolim) Klinkacek. She married Clinton VanWinkle on Feb. 9, 1926, in Grand Island. They lived west of Cairo and moved into Cairo in 1942. They lived their married life in and around Cairo. Mr. VanWinkle died on March 1, 1985. She continued to live in Cairo until she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna in 1994. She was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church and W.S.C.S. Survivors include two daughters, Loretta (Mrs. Henry) Rhoda and Doris (Mrs. Roy) Hochstetler, both of Cairo; one son, Edward VanWinkle of Cairo; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and three sisters.

James I. Van Trump

Salt Lake City < James Isaiah "Jim" Van Trump, 87, formerly of Greeley and Grand Island, died Thursday, Jan. 8. I998, in Salt Lake City. His ashes will be interred at the LaGrange. Wyo., Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Mr. Van Trump was born on Dec. 7, l9l0. in Greeley t0 Frances and Anna Van Trump. As a young man, he worked in the beet harvest in western Nebraska and northeast Colorado. He married June Spellman of Wood River on May 9, 194]. and started his own trucking company. He was an explosives expert with the US. Army Air Corps during World War [I and helped build air strips for US. planes on Okinawa. After the war, he returned to Wood River and began farming. He later homesteaded in the Riverton, Wyo., area before going to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. He moved to Hillsdale and later to LaGrange, Wyo. Following his retirement, he returned to Grand Island for several years.
