CLIPPING A REMINDER OF FATAL CAVE IN
TELLS OF ACCIDENT NEAR ATKINSON IN 80S THAT COST TWO LIVES
(Norfolk News)
One of the incidents that the Floyd Collins tragedy will recall to the minds of old settlers in this part of the state occurred near Atkinson in the early 80s and is described in the following clipping from the Niobrara Pioneer kindly sent to the News by Mrs William Hubbard of Lynch.
"Word reaches us from Atkinson of the sad death of two brothers by the name of Biglow. They were digging a well last Thursday and had reached the depth of 25 feet, when the quicksand gave way burying the unfortunate men in the bowels of the earth. No one was near when the accident took place, but when discovered both were alive, although one was badly hurt by falling timbers.
"On Saturday evening, about 9 oclock, one of the men in the well called to his friends to do all in their power to rescue him; that he could live but a short time longer; that his brother had died the day before from injuries received when the well caved. Feeling sure that nothing could be done he bid his family and friends good by. Nothing more was heard, and on the following day both men were taken out and buried immediately. They leave large families, who have the sympathy of all in this their sore bereavement.
Mrs Hubbard has been keeping clippings of interesting events for 44 years.

One of the Werner daughters, Gertie remembers that there was no Protestant cemetery in Atkinson when they moved there. When her sister Mable died she was buried in a little grave plot on the Bowen place, six miles east of town. However, Mr Bowen refused to give the district a deed to the burial ground and a new cemetery was laid out in Atkinson and the graves moved to town. Seven graves were moved to this cemetery, about twenty rods east of the present highschool on outlot A. Among them was that of Laura Wheeler, and the Bigelow brothers. These last lost their lives in a well cave in on their homestead 14 miles northwest of town in 1881.

MISS ME, BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free
Miss me a little- but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
Its all a part of the Masters plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me, but let me go.

Pleasant flower, how soon thou art nipt
By deaths old hand thy bloom is stripd
Thy pleasant form lies very low
But will one day immortal grow

A light is from our household gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A ? is vacant by our hearth
Which never can be filled
