GEORGE DEXTER COTTON

     George D Cotton, for 43 years a resident of Holt County passed away at his farm home west of the city August the 11th.

     George Dexter Cotton, son of Dr and Mrs J D Cotton was born at Marietta, Ohio, Feb 11,1861 and died Aug 11,1927 at the age of 66 years, 6 months at his home near Stuart.

     Mr Cotton spent his childhood days at Marietta and received his education there, attending Marietta academy and college.

     In 1884 he came to Holt Co and homesteaded. In 1886 he married Eva Blondin, who came with her parents from Ohio in 1883. To this union were born 10 children- 2 who died in infancy; those living are Mrs Anna Brocker of Creighton, Mrs Edna Halligan of Cedar Butte, SD, Mrs Dorothy Griender of Crawford, Mrs Lelia Shields of Omaha, Lillian of Omaha, John of Gregory, SD, Ruth and Dewitt Dexter of Stuart.

     Mr Cotton leaves besides his wife and children, 1 sister, Millea Dawson Cotton of Marietta, Ohio, 1 niece, Blossom Ellicott of Brooklyn, NY and 1 nephew, Colonel Caspher Conrad in army service and 19 grandchildren.

     Mr Cotton was an intelligent, well educated man. He was generous hearted; and reliable in his business dealings; a good citizen and firm in his support of temperance; cordial within the circle of his immediate friends. "Blest be the tie that binds" was his favorite hymn. Two days before his death he bade his son goodbye and asked himto care for his mother. He was of a cheerful, happy nature and was highly esteemed.

     The funeral services were held Saturday, Aug 13 at Presbyterian Church in Atkinson, Interment was made in the Atkinson Cemetery.

Coxbill, Fred

FUNERAL OF FRED COXBILL HELD HERE
FATHER OF CC AND EARL COXBILL OF ATKINSON, DIES AT STUART HOSPITAL

     Fred Coxbill, 64, father of C C Coxbill and Earl Coxbill of Atkinson, died Tuesday at Stuart hospital. Mr Coxbill's home wasa at Fairfield. He had been in failing health the past 3 years and 2 weeks before his death was taken to the hospital in Stuart. He is survived by his wife and 5 sons.

     The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church here Thursday, Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

     Fred Coxbill, son of William and Hanah Coxbill, was born May 8,1867 at Hook Norton, England, and passed this life Tuesday, Sept 8,1931, aged 64 years and 4 months.

     Mr Coxbill came to America in 1881 and settled on a farm at Fairfield, Clay County, Nebr, and resided in that community until his death. When a young man he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was a faithful member both in attending and support until death.

     On Oct 16,1890 he was married to Miss Lena Victoria Fores. To them were born 5 sons, all of whom survive and were present with their mother at the funeral. They are Minor A of Deweese, James F of Henry, Chauncey C of Atkinson, Maxmilimum W of Deweese, Earl Jerome of Atkinson. His wife and sister, Mrs Jane Elger of London, England and 3 grand children.

     Mr Coxbill was very devoted to his family and rejoiced exceedingly that his boys were upright, manly citizens of high moral character. He received much joy from recounting the happy days of his boyhood in England. As his end drew near he repeatedly affirmed that he had a home in heaven and was ready to go and claim his reward.

Dunn, Rosa Rebecca Schmidt

EARLY RESIDENT OF THIS COMMUNITY PASSES AWAY

     Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in this city Wednesday afternoon for Mrs Rosa Dunn, 70, who passed away Monday after more than 50 years a resident of Holt County and 27 years a resident of Atkinson. She had been in failing health for many years, however her last illness was of less than 2 weeks duration.

     Mrs Dunn was born at Homesdale, Penn, Jan 3,1860. At the time of her death in Atkinson, June 10 her age was 75 years, 5 months and 9 days. Her maiden name was Rosa Rebecca Schmidt. After coming to Holt County with her parents she was married to Thomas J Dunn, on April 8,1880, by County Judge William Malloy. She was then 21 years of age.

     Mr and Mrs Dunn homesteaded a few miles west of Atkinson and farmed there and elsewhere near here until 27 years ago when they moved to town. Here Mr Dunn died 10 years ago, at the age of 77 years.

     Mrs Dunn was the youngest of 9 brothers and sisters, all of whom are deceased. She is survived by 5 children, Thomas J Dunn of Atkinson, Mrs Lilly Solfermoser of Inez, George William of Spokane, Wash; Mrs Amelia Schrader of Atkinson and Frederick of Atkinson. One child, Emily Susannah, died in early childhood. Five grandchildren also are living.

     Her acquaintances speak of her as a kindly lady, a good mother and one whose welcome was always extended to the visits of her friends. Grief stricken at the death of her husband 10 years ago, her health has failed gradually. For years she has kept house for her son, Frederick, suffering considerably from rheumatism, but her last illness continued for less than 2 weeks before her death.

     On March 24,1872, when she was 13 years old, she was confirmed in the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Homesdale, Penn, by Pastor J T Wilkin. After coming to Holt County she attended the services of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson.

Gettert, Charley Henry

DEATH TAKES AGED NEBRASKA PIONEER
C H GETTERT DIES AT HIS FARMHOME 10 MILES NORTHEAST OF ATKINSON

     C H Gettert, aged Nebraska pioneer died last Friday at his farm home 10 miles northeast of Atkinson. Mr Gettert was 86 years of age and has been a resident of Nebraska for 65 years.

     Funeral services were held at the home Monday and burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson.

     Charles Henry Gettert was born in Germany June 17,1845. At the age of 5 years he came with his parents to America. They settled at Muscatipe, Iowa, where Charley lived until he was 21. He moved to Cass County, Nebraska where he took a homestead.

     Mr Gettert was married to Ella Matson at Lincoln, Aug 20,1878. To this union 6 children were born, 2 of whom died in infancy.

     Surviving him are his wife, Ella, 4 children, Lewis, Rena, Carl of Atkinson, Mrs F S Wright of Long Pine. 5 grandchildren, Loretta Wright and Floyd, Elva, Eugene, Glen Gettert of Atkinson; brother Peter of Muscatine, Iowa.

Hammill, Undine Elizabeth Burley

MRS EDW L HAMMILL

     Mrs Edw L Hammill passed away at her home in Atkinson the 19th inst, aged 26 years, 3 months and 22 days.

     The surviving members of the family are her husband and 3 children, Thomas, Clarence, and Luella Viola; also her parents, Mr and Mrs Everett Burley of this county, and the following named sisters and brothers, Mrs August Wabs, Mrs Ada Stewart, Sadie, Estella, Dora, Luella, Virginia, Lawrence, Floyd, Evertt Burley.

     Undine Elisabeth Burley was born May 28,1900 in Beaman, Iowa. In 1910 she came with her parents to Holt County, Nebr, and in Oct 1918 was married to Edw L Hammill.

     Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at St John's Lutheran Church, and interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

FRANK HANEL FUNERAL IS HELD IN ATKINSON
BODY OF FORMER ATKINSON RESIDENT BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL IN WOODLAWN

     Funeral services for Frank Hanel, former Atkinson resident who died at his home in Bayard Thursday,last week, were held here at Kilmurry Funeral parlor, Sunday. A short burial ritual was read at the grave by members of the Sons of Herman Lodge, of which Mr Hanel was a member.

     Frank Hanel was born in Heinzendorf, Germany, April 1,1864 and died at his home in Bayard, Oct 15,1931, aged 67 years, 6 months and 13 days. He came to America in 1886 and made his home with his sister, Mrs Agnes Goldfuss for a short while. Later he opened a shoe shop in Atkinson, where he remained in business for 18 years.

     In May 1900 Mr Hanel was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Hettinger of Naper. To them 7 children were born; 2 of whom, Jesse and Helen, died in infancy. After the death of his wife on July 5,1918, Mr Hanel moved to Bayard and made his home with his boys. He enjoyed good health until Jan, this year, when he suffered a paralytic stroke at Sterling, Color. He recovered and returned to Bayard, where he was getting along splendidly until death came suddenly upon him.

     He is survived by 5 sons, George and Victor of Denver, Colo, Alfred of Brighton, Colo, Henry of Bayard, Francis of Atkinson, 1 sister, Mrs Agnes Goldfuss; 2 grandchildren, 7 nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Hendricks, Oscar Nile

DEATH TAKES WELL KNOWN RANCH OWNER
O N HENDRICKS PASSED AWAY LAST MONDAY NIGHT AT STUART
LIVED HERE 30 YEARS
WAS ONE OF LEADING RANCHERS IN THIS SECTION; FUNERAL HELD YESTERDAY

     Death took another promient resident from this community when last Monday night, O N Hendricks, 58, passed away at the Stuart Hospital. Mr Hendricks had been one of the leading ranchers of this county. He lived 16 miles north of Atkinson.

     Mr Hendricks for several months had been suffering with cancer of the throat. Last June he went to the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minn, for treatment and came home seemly much improved. About 6 weeks ago he went to the hospital in Stuart, his condition rapidly growing worse until death came as a merciful relief to his intense suffering.

     Brief rites were conducted at the Hendricks home yesterday afternoon, then at Methodist Church, Atkinson, of which Mr Hendricks was a member. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

     Oscar Nile Hendricks, son of Joseph and Sophia Hendricks was born at Douglas, Otoe County, Nebr, on Feb 17,1873 and passed this life Sept 21,1931, age 58 years, 7 months 4 days.

     Death was preceded by several months of illness and suffering which grew intense in the last few weeks of his life, during which he was confined in the hospital at Stuart.

     In 1900 Mr Hendricks came to Holt County and as a young man settled on a ranch 16 miles north of Atkinson, where he remained in partnership with his father, Joseph Hendricks, until his death.

     On July 15,1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Edna Alberta Cannon of Celia and to them 7 children were born. One son, Willard, died in infancy. Soon after his marriage, Mr Hendricks became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Atkinson. A few years ago when the family moved to McAllen, Texas for a short time, his church member ship was transferred to that city.

     Mr Hendricks served faithfully in many capacities as a neighbor and citizen in the community where he lived. With his beloved wife, he reared and trained a splendid family of children in home life that was permented with that desirable spirit of loyalty and Christian fellowship.

     As his end drew near, Mr Hendricks sought to hide his own physical suffering and always presented an agreeable, warm welcome to those who visited him. His last request was for reading of the scripture and prayer.

     He is survived by his wife and 6 children; Harold Glen of McAllen, Tex; Mark W, Joseph J, Elva Nina, Marjorie Catherine and Eunice Lucille at home, his father, Joseph Hendricks of Atkinson, sister, Mrs Leona Webber of Seneca.

Karr, George Phillip

GEORGE KARR DIES OF WOUNDS FROM ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF SHOTGUN

     Wounds inflicted by the accidental discharge of a shotgun at this home five miles southwest of Atkinson at ten o'clock AM Monday, resulted in the death of George P Karr Wed evening.

     Mr Karr that morning was about to leave his home to go on an errand to a neighbor's, and intending to take the gun along reached out to remove it from its accustomed place beside the door he had just passed through. He placed his right hand on the muzzle to lift it, and at that instant the gun was in some manner discharged. The shot tore away part of his right hand, and having leaned slightly, his head had come in range for the fatal injury. A portion of the charge entered his right eye and mutilated the side of his head at the temple.

     Unshaken apparently by the catastrophe he calmly asked his wife to help him to bed. She then had to go a mile to a telephone to summon the doctor.

     Dr Douglas with Dr McKee in consultation, attended his injuries within a short time, and later he was removed to the hospital in Atkinson where he passed away Wednesday evening.

     George P Karr, son of Edw M Karr, was born in Hastings, Nebr, Dec 1,1896. He attended high school in Blue Hill, Nebr. He came to Holt County with his parents in 1914.

     Feb 28,1923 at Stuart, Nebr, he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie R Malone. To them was born one child, little Dorothy May, who, with her mother, witnessed the fatal tragedy that took from them the husband and father.

     Deceased was a World War soldier. He enlisted in the Army Feb 2, 1918 at Omaha, and was discharged July 3,1919 at Camp Funston.

     He was a motor mechanic in the air service and spent six months in France and six months in Germany.

     Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist Episcopal Church this afternoon.

     The John Farley Post American Legion of Atkinson will observe the burial rites at Woodlawn Cemetery.

MacLachlan, Donald

PIONEER MINISTER IS LAID TO REST
DONALD MACLACHLAN, 90, DIED AT HIS FARM HOME NEAR ATKINSON JULY 26

     Donald MacLachlan, 90 year old pioneer Nebraska minister, died at his farm home northeast of Atkinson Monday evening, July 26, following a short illness. Mr MacLachlan came to Nebraska in 1886 and served as pastor of the Plainview United Presbyterian Church about 7 miles northeast of Atkinson.

     Funeral services were held Presbyterian Church, Atkinson, Wednesday of last week.

     Donald MacLachlan, son of Archibald and Mary MacLachlan, was born at Oban, Scotland, Argyleshire, in the month of July, 1841. When he was 11 years of age his parents emmigrated to Hamden, Delaware County, NY, where he was educated in Delhi Academy and Union College, graduating from college in 1867, and from Union Seminary in 1870, in which year he was ordained to the Gospel ministry by the Presbytery of Delaware of the United Presbyterian Church.

     He served as pastor in New Jersey for 5 years and then moved to Rock Prairie, Wis, where he was pastor of the United Presbyterian church for 11 years. He moved to Nebraska in 1886, and served as pastor of the Plainview United Presbyterian Church about 7 miles northeast of Atkinson.

     On Nov 1,1877 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Laura Wilson Hutchinson to which union were born David A, James A, Robert H, John A and Mary L, all of whom survive him together with 2 granddaughters, Larua R and Roma L MacLachlan. His beloved and faithful wife for 51 years passed on before Feb 17,1929.He was the eldest in his family and the last to depart this mortal life. He knew what it means to endure hardships, working his way through school and pioneering in home missionary work.

     All of the children reside near Atkinson except David, who came from his home in Des Moines, Iowa to attend the funeral.

Mohr, Blanche Ethel

HEART ATTACK FATAL TO 15 YEAR OLD GIRL
BLANCHE MOHR IS STRICKEN WHILE DRIVING CATTLE FROM CORN FIELD

     While helping her mother drive the cattle out of the corn, Blanche Mohr, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Mohr living southeast of Emmet, dropped dead of heart failure Monday afternoon.

     Blanche and her mother were resting in the house during the heat of the day but when they discovered the cattle in the corn they went to drive them out. They had reached the field and just started after the cattle when the young girl was stricken and fell to the ground. Mrs Mohr carried her daughter to the hosue and then ran a mile to the nearest neighbor, Jack Welen, for help and to summon a doctor.

     The sudden death of this young girl was a shock to the whole community where she lives. She had always seemed to be in perfect health. When the doctor arrived at the Mohr home he found that the girl had died almost instantly when the valves of the heart closed and ceased to function.

     Funeral services were held at Atkinson Wednesday morning at Methodist Church and burial made inWoodlawn Cemetery.

     Blanche Ethel Mohr was born in O'Neil, Oct 27,1912 and departed this life Aug 6,1928, aged 15 years, 9 months 10 days. She attended high school in Atkinson 2 years where she was a member of the high school glee club.

     She leaves to mourn her death her father and mother, Mr and Mrs John Mohr; 2 brothers and 3 sisters; John, Doris, Francis, Lois, Alice; her grandfather, A J Mohr, grandmothers Mrs A J Mohr living in Cal and Mrs J T Elsbury of Atkinson; and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Peebler, infant

TALEUM POWDER KILLS BABY

     The 3 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Glen Peebler of West Point, playfully powdered the face of her 6 month old sister Wednesday. Today the infant is dangerously ill at Fremont hospital suffering with pneumonia, as a result of having inhaled some of the powder.

     The baby's death occurred the last of the week. Mr and Mrs Peebler came to Atkinson Wedneday night bringing the remains for burial here.

     Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs Peebler's brother, DeLoss Moulton, Thursday at 2:30 and interment made in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mr Peebler was in California and came at once.

     Friends sympathize with them in this sad bereavement.

Poessnecker, William Henry

ATKINSON FARMER STRICKEN SUDDENLY
WILLIAM POESSNECKER DIES OF HEART FAILURE; FUNERAL SERVICE HELD TUESDAY

     William Poessnecker, 66, farmer living 8 miles north and a mile west of Atkinson, was stricken with heart failure while in bed early last Sunday morning and died without regaining consciousness. Mr Poessnecker was operated upon for appendicitis about 6 weeks ago but apparently had recovered and seemed to have been getting along very nicely.

     Funeral services were held Tuesday at St John's Lutheran Church, Atkinson.

     William Henry Poessnecker was born Jan 31,1865 in Hof an der Saale, Bavaria, Germany and died at his home near Atkinson Oct 4,1931, aged 66 years, 8 months and 4 days.

     In 1886 he came to America to make his home with his uncle Julius Poessnecker, at Stanton, Nebr, On June 4,1898 he was married to Miss Pauline Happold of Stanton. To this union 6 children were born, who with their mohter survive Mr Poessnecker. They are Ottmar, Mrs Erna Goldfuss, Rudolph, Eugene, Thilo, Werner, all of Atkinson. 1 grandson and a cousin, Mrs Lillian Hahn of Stuart.

     In 1920 Mr Poessnecker and his family moved from Stanton to Inman, where they lived for 7 years, coming to Atkinson in 1927.

     Mr Poessnecker was a member of the Atkinson Lodge Sons of Herman of which he was a past president.

Spry, Gale

KICK BY HORSE IS FATAL TO GALE SPRY

     Gale Spry, 15, son of Mr and Mrs M W Spry, who live east of Phoenix, died in the Stuart hospital Thursday, Aug 20 of injuried received the day before, when a horse kicked him in the stomach. The lad was mowing hay and was kicked as he was unhooking one of the tugs. Funeral services were held in O'Neill last Saturday at the Presbyterian Church and the body was laid to rest in the Phoenix Cemetery.
