   Word of the death of Pearl Wright Amerine was received here Friday, by her father, Robert Wright, Chief of police of Atkinson, at her home in Martenez, California. Mrs Amerine died of pneumonia.

   The body was shipped to Atkinson accompanied by Mr Amerince, and it reached here Tuesday.

   Funeral services were held at Presbyterian Church in Atkinson.Interment was in Stuart Cemetery, where her mother and sister: are buried.

   Pearl Wright, eldest daughter of Robert and Alice Wright, was born: on the farm near Amelia, Holt Co, Nebr, on the 10th day of Dec, 1897.

   She grew to womanhood in Atkinson and was married here July 4,1918 to Clarence V Amerine. They moved from Atkinson to Martenez, California last March 1924, and it was there her death occurred DCec 26,1924, at the age of 27 years and 16 days.

   She is survived by her husband, her father, two brothers, Benjamin and Lloyd and one sister, Mrs Charles Jarvis, all of Atkinson.

WAS OVER 83 YEARS OF AGE; SUFFERED PARALYTIC STROKE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

   John E Andrus, who for more than 40 years has been a resident of Holt Co near Atkinson, passed away at the home of his son, Arthur W, 4 miles southeast of Atkinosn, Friday, Feb 27. Mr Andrus was a few months past 83 years of age. He had been in ill health the past few years and especially the past two months, having suffered a stroke the day after Christmas.

   Mr Andrus moved from Cass Co to a farm 18 miles north of Aktinson in the fall of 1889. In 1892 he purchased a farm 4 miles southeast of Atkinson where he moved with his family and lived until 1909. Suffering ill health for a few years,he decided to quit farming, sold the place and moved to town. Mr and Mrs Andrus were not long satisfied with life in town so three years later they bought a farm 10 miles southwest of Atkinson, where they lived until Mrs Andrus died Sept 28,1920.

   After the death of his wife, Mr Andrus made his home with his daughter Mrs Pat Hayes and his son Arthur W who lives on the old home place 4 miles southeast of town. Besides these two children: he is survived by an adopted son, Charles D Andrus, also of Atkinson. One son, Charles M died when a small boy.

   Funeral services were held Sunday at Methodist Episcopal Church, Atkinson. Four of the pallbearers Lawrence Hayes, Owen Hayes, Clarence Callely and Milton Andrus are grandsons of Mr Andrus.

   John F Andrus was born: near Canton, Bradford Co, Penn, Nov 20,1847. His mother died when he was five years of age, and at 17, he started to make his own way in life. In the spring of 1859 he started westward, stopping at Marengo, Iowa where for a time he worked on a farm. In 1870 Mr Andrus came to Nebraska and for $600 purchased an 80 acre claim near Plattsmouth. He was married to Exona Harbour Jan 28,1873 in Pilot Township, Iowa Co.

   From a sketch of Mr Andrus life published in Cass Co more than 40 years ago the following paragraph is taken.

   "Mr Andrus was a member of the school board for 5 years. Has been superintendent of the Sunday School at Union and Eagle for 9 years. Hhe takes a lively interest in politics and is an active republican. He is a gentleman who believes in farming a little land and farming it well. He is a man who deserves and has the respect and confidence of all his neighbors and strict and unswerving integrity marks all his transactions.

FRANKLIN T ATTEBERRY

   Franklin T Atteberry, was born: in Macon Co,Ill, near the town of Macon on May 6th, 1857, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Florence L Corrington on March 9,1881. To this union 7 children: were born, who with his wife are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father.

   The children: are: J N of Atkinson, Mrs H L Merrill of Westcliff, Colo; N L of Eldorado Springs, Mo; Mrs F C Oakley of Ainsworth, Mrs S L Gilbert of Gillette, Wyo; S F of Colome, SD, J C of Maysdorf, Wyo.

   Mr Atteberry resided in Wyo until recently, when, because of failing health, he gave up active work and with his wife had been spending the winter with his son JN and family. His death occurred March 10,1924 at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 4 days.

   He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of 24 years. Funeral services was held Thursday, Rev E L Peterson and Rev Fintel conducted the service and burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

OBITUARY- BALLON

   John Ballon, the subject of this sketch, was born: in Bohemia, the 16th day of May 1837. At the age of 44 years he came to America reaching West Point, Nebraska, in the spring of 1881. He came to Atkinson in the spring of 1884 and has resided in Holt County, on a piece of land he then homesteaded, ever since.

   He was married to Mary Ceral when about 24 years of age, who died about 4 years ago.

   To this union was born: 9 children, 4 boys and 4 girls of whom are now living, 1 boy having died when about 10 years of age. Those living are Raymond, John, Joseph, Charles, Christine, Barbara, Julia and Millie. Two of the girls are married, Mrs Julia Hatfield of Atkinson and Mrs Christine Selkirk of Sioux City, Iowa.

   Mr Ballon died on Thursday morning of last week, being the 19th day of Oct, at the age of 74 years, 5 months and 3 days.

   The burial took place in Woodlawn Cemetery last Saturday, beside his wife who had preceded him in death. Besides his children, Mr Ballon leaves to mourn his decease many old neighbors and friends who will long remember him as such.

ATKINSON PIONEER DIES AT HIS HOME AFTER 2 YEAR ILLNESS

   Death came as a relief to the long suffering of John S Ballon, 64 year old Atkinson pioneer who passed away Tuesday, Sept 3 at his home in this city. Mr Ballon had been in ill health for several years and for the past two years had been confined to his home practically all the time.

   Mr Ballon came to Atkinson 51 years ago in a covered wagon and this city had been his home all but four years since that time. For many years he was associated with the late N J Tuller in the cattle business. They also did an extensive real estate business here for a long time. Mr Ballon retired from active business about 15 years ago.

   He was widely known and respected in this vicinity and for years was a leading figure in local democratic political affairs. During his long illness he was a patient sufferer and always enjoyed visiting with friends who called to see him.

   Not long ago, realizing that he had not long to live, he called in a few of his closest friends and to them expressed his wishes in regard to fineral services. These were carried out in the rites held yesterday at his home. Atkinson Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which Mr Ballon was a member for 31 years, and a past noble grand, had complete charge, the arrangements being made by B B Adams.

   The Rev C E McPheerson read the obituary and offered prayer. The Odd Fellow ritual sermon was delivered by Chaplain L E McDowell. Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   John S Ballon was born: on the 8th day of February, 1871 in Churdim, Czecho-Slovakia, and departed from this life Sept 3,1935 at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 27 days.

   In the year 1881 he came to America with his parents and located at West Point, Nebr. In 1884 he came in a covered wagon to Atkinson, locating on a homestead 15 miles southwest of this city, where for a few years he endured the hardships of pioneer life.

   In 1893 he left for the west, and after working for some time on ranches in Wyoming, he went into business for himself at Colbertson, Mont. In the year 1897 he disposed of his business in Colbertson and came back to Atkinson where he went into the cattle business with the late N J Tuller. They operated a ranch about 12 miles southwest of Atkinson for a few years and then moved to town. In addition to cattle raising, they engaged in the real estate business, Mr Ballon retiring about 15 years ago.

   He leaves to mourn his death, three brothers, and three sisters, Raymond of Nohly, Mont; Joe and Charlie of Atkinson; Barbara and Mrs Julia Bitney of Atkinson; Mrs Millie Neher of Colville, Wash.

KATHERINE BECKER, EARLY HOMESTEADER, IS DEAD

   Mrs Katherine Becker, for 47 years a resident of this community, passed away Wednesday in Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton,SD, where just a week previous she had been operated upon for gall stones. Her death came as a shock to her relatives and friends, since after the operation she rallied and seemed to be recovering nicely until Monday night when her condition changed. At her bedside were her sons, Edward of BelleFourche and Garett of White River, SD and a daughter, Mrs John Henning of Atkinson. She was 77 years of age.

   The funeral service will be held Saturday at St Josephs Catholic Church in this city, conducted by Rev John Pieper. Burial will be made in St Joseph's Cemetery beside the body of her husband, Joseph Becker, who died May 9,1891 at the age of 39 years and a son, Henry, who passed away Feb 2,1892 at the age of 5.

   Katherine Wedige was born: in Coblenz, Germany, on June 11,1851. In 1860 at the age of 9 years, she came to the US with her parents. They settled on a farm near Darlington, Wis. On Feb 17,1873 she became the bride of Joseph Becker. 7 years later her husband came to Holt County and took a homestead 7 miles north of Atkinson. The family came the following year in 1881.

   Mrs Becker moved to town 23 years ago and for a number of years conducted a millinery store in Atkinson. Surviving her are five children. They are Mrs Fred Jansen and John Becker of Casper, Wyo; Garett Becker of White River, SD; Edward Becker of Bellefourche, SD, Mrs John Henning of Atkinson. All the children: are here to attend the funeral. Also surviving her are 23 grandchildren: and four great grandchildren; Mrs Paul Seger of Atkinson, a niece and John and Joe Wedige of Stuart, nephews.

FRANK BITNEY, FOUNDER OF ATKINSON, COMES BACK FOR ETERNAL REST IN THIS CITY
EARLY HOLT PIONEER DIED LAST SUNDAY AT SOLDIERS HOME AT HOT SPRINGS; CAME HERE IN 1873; FIVE YEARS LATER PLATTED THE TOWN ON HIS OWN PREEMPTION

   Back to Atkinson, the town which 52 years ago he platted on his preemption on the Holt County prairie, came Frank Bitney Tuesday from Battle Mountain Sanitarium, Hot Springs, SD, where the past 15 years he made his home.

   Not to visit relatives and old time acquaintances did he come, but to be laid to rest in peace under the sod of the prairie he loved. At the age of 85 years, after an illness of several weeks, he passed away last Sunday, April 27 at Hot Springs.

   Atkinson folks Tuesday paid their last respects to the man who founded their town. In the large gathering which filled the Methodist Church at the funeral services, also were many Holt County old timers who came for a last farewell to a comrade of pioneer days. Among them was only one of the little colony that came with Mr Bitney to this county in 1873. That one was Wm Dickerson of Atkinson. Among them was only one remaining comrade of Civl War Days, That one was L Brown of Stuart.

   The funeral service was conducted by Rev Geo M Carter, pastor of the church. In its flag draped casket, the body was borne to the grave by members of the John Farley Post American Legion, escorted by Legion color guard and firing squad and the WRC ladies.

   Frank Bitney was born: at Beaver Creek, Wis, July 15,1845. When a young man, he volunteered for service with the Union army in the Civil War, and enlisted at Madison, Wis, with Co I, 23rd Wis volunteers. He was the youngest of five brothers: who served the Union, and he experienced some difficulty in enlisting because of his age.

   At Baraboo, Franklin Co, Wis, on Dec 30,1865 he was married to Miss Clarissa Dickerson. To this union were born: 6 children, of which the oldest boy, Frank H was the first white child born: in Holt County, Nebr. Phoebe H was born: at Baraboo, Wis, April 16,1869 and died March 10,1929 at Wilmette, Ill. Ida M was bornJuly 22,1871 at Baraboo and died Feb 6,1872. Frank H was born: May 22,1874 at O'Neill and is now living in Atkinson. William R of Fremont was born: at O'Neill, July 14,1876, Fred J of Grass Valley, Cal was born: at Atkinson, June 4,1880. Guy L was born: at Atkinson on May 3,1883 and died Sept 26,1883.

   Frank Bitney with a colony of pioneers from Wisconsin, came to Holt County in 1873. Other members of the party were Wm Bitney, Wm Dickerson, H H McEvony and family, E H Thompson and family, L Prouty and family, Jennie Schultz. Coming in covered camp wagons, they faced the hardships of entering an unsettled and undeveloped country. The little colony settled at a place one mile southeast of what is now the city of O'Neill, and named the settlement Rockford. One year later the O'Neill colony came to Holt County and the city of O'Neill was founded.

   In 1877 Mr Bitney and his family moved from their homestead near O'Neill and took a preemption on the land on which the city of Atkinson now stands. Here he opened the first mercantile business in this community, also the first postoffice. He had the city of Atkinson platted on his land in 1878.

   For more than 20 years he engaged in the mercantile business in Atkinson. He then sold out and bought a livery barn where the Smith and Spann garage is now located in this city. This business he conducted until 1908.

   On April 6,1909 Mrs Bitney died.

   Besides the children: who are living, he is survived by one sister, Mrs Sophia LaBell, who lives in Wisconsin, four grandchildren, Mrs Clarissa Mlinar of Atkinson, Mrs Esther Kemp of Martin, SD, Miss Phoebe Bitney of Pender, Nebr, and Robert Bitney, adopted son of Wm R of Fremont; 8 great grandchildren, a son-in-law, G G Krueger of New York City; two brothers-in-law, Wm Dickerson of Atkinson and Tom Dickerson of York.

   In line with his life as a pioneer, Mr Bitney helped survey the Nebraska-South Dakota State line and at one time during this work he was reported killed by the Indians. It was 3 months before news of the error of the reported reached his family in Holt County. He also was one of Holt County's first commissioners.

   In the early days, the front part of the building now occupied by the Chace meat market was Mr Bitney's store. In 1884 he built the old rink, which last summer was razed by wreckers.

   Mr Bitney was a member of the Atkinson Reds, a famous early day baseball team. Some of the other players in his time were Elmer Blake, Fred Dashley, Ed Butler, C M Forney, Harry Matthews, Hulbert, Jim Davis and Dr Blackburn.

MAN DROWNED AT EWING

   Tuesday of last week, Joseph Borgelt, a young man of 20 years, whose home was in Ewing went on horseback to look after the cattle on the old Sievers ranch north of town, and failed to return. The next day the horse returned riderless, and it was at once surmised that the man had been drowned. Searching parties were immediately organized and on Tuesday of this week, his body was found by Jas Weaverling.

   The young man was a powerful swimmer, and it is thought that he must have been hurt when thrown into the water, or he would otherwise have been able to save himself. Funeral services were held Wednesday.

SOLDIER AND CITIZEN

   From the State Journal of the 26th the following is gleaned concerning a former citizen of this county, whose death was noted last week.

   William Bowen was born: Oct 28,1824 in Bustleton, now within Philadelphia, Penn, and died April 20,1909 in Lincoln, being at the time of his death 84 years, 5 months and 22 days. He had been sick 8 weeks.

   On Dec 12,1848, he married Caroline Starkey. To this union were born: four children, one of whom, W S Bowen of Woodhill, Ill, survives. On Aug 14,1862 he married Mary E Appleman. To this union 6 children: were born, four of whom, with the widow survive. N U of Aledo, Ill, Lillian M of Lincoln, Oran R of Pierce, Earl E of Creighton.

   Mr Bowen moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania in 1854 and to Holt County, Nebraska in 1883, and to Lincoln in 1894. He had been an active member of the M E Church for 65 years, serving as Sunday School superintendent, as trustee, as steward and as delegate to conferences. He was active in public life. In 1862 he enlisted as a soldier in Co G, 112th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was detailed soon after enlistment as hospital steward, in which capacity he served during the war. He was justice of peace for 40 years, was county judge of Holt County and a member of the state agricultural board.

General Thomas J Henderson, colonel of his regiment, offers the following:

   "I take pleasure in stating that the bearer of this letter, Mr William Bowen, was a member of Co G, 112th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, regiment I had the honor to command in the Civil War. The history of the regiment written by Captain Bradford F Thompson, for some time adjutant and afterwards captain of Co B of the regiment, says of William that he was detailed Sept 22,1862 and served his whole term in the hospital department and was one of the best men in the regiment; and I take great pleasure from my personal knowledge of his character in concurring n that opinion, and believe it to be the feeling of every man in the regiment. When the chaplain of the regiment resigned his office the regiment desired to have him appointed chaplain, but he was not a minister of the gospel and could not be appointed, and as no one was appointed he substantially filled the office and performed the duties and I know but few chaplains inthe army who rendered better service and did more good than he. He was a man of excellent character and his influence over the officers and men of the regiment was always good, an dI may say invaluable in maintaining discipline and good conductof the officers and men of the regiment. No man could have been more ready or willing to perform his duty when called upon that he was, and I take great pleasure in commending him to the confidence, the courtesy and kindness of all our old comrades with whom he may be associated.

   The funeral services for Mr Bowen were held from the house Thursday, April 22. Dr J W Jones of Grace, M E Church, had charge of the services.Scripture was read by Rev W W McGuire, Rev F M Eaterbrook offered prayer. Dr Jones spoke beautifully of his church relationship. Rev J W Carter and Rev A S Hisey, both of whom were very near neighbors and visited him frequently in his late illness, spoke of him. The casket was covered and surrounded with beautiful flowers and a sheaf of wheat lay among the flowers on the casket. The G AR had charge of the services at the Cemetery. Chaplain Mickie made an address full of tenderness. At the request of the deceased his four surviving sons were the active pallbearers. Six comrades of Farrugot Post, GAR acted as honorary pallbearers. The body was placed in the vault temporarily during the construction of a cement vault grave. Friday it was removed to its final resting place.

OBITUARY

   James Brook was born at Ashford Co, Kent, England, Sept 25,1828.

   He was married to Frances Ward in London, England, in1852. Coming to America about 60 years ago, they resided in Illinois and Iowa before coming to Atkinson, where they have made their home about 17 years ago and the latter preceded him to the other world 8 years ago, March 27,1910.

   Five children were born to this union, 2 boys dying in infancy.

   Charles and Jess Brook who grew to manhood were prominent in the hardware business here for many years, the former departing this life 17 years ago and the latter only 5 years ago.

   Their only daughter, Mrs Nellie B Foote, has taken care of her father and has been his constant companion during these last years of his life.

   Mr Brook learned marble cutting as a trade in England and worked at it in earlier years, but since coming to Atkinson he has engaged in gardening and fruit growing.

   Being of a quiet, retiring manner, Mr Brook was not well known to a large circle of acquaintances, but the few who met him in his home and became intimately associated with him, recognized the sterling qualities and real worth of the man, who to a ripe old age lived a quiet, useful and an active life.

   He died Saturday, April 20th, 1918, aged 89 years, 6 months and 25 days and was buried Sunday, Rev Berg assisted by Rev Wells, conducting the funeral service in the home.

   Mesdames Eby and Wilburn and Messrs Hall and Snyder sang the three beautiful hymns- Rock of Ages, Face to Face, and Nearer My God to Thee and so was laid to rest a kindly friends and a good citizen.

   Mr Brooks was the last of a family of 11 children.

DEATH TAKES MARY ANN DONNELLY, PIONEER WOMAN

   Mary Ann Donnelly, probably Atkinson's best known pioneer woman, died in Omaha Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Agness McQuilken, 411 North 22nd Street, with whom she was spending the winter. Mrs Donnelly was 72 years of age and came to Atkinson 46 years ago. The greater part of her life here was spent in helpful services to others, she being for years the only nurse in the community. This fact perhaps made her beloved in many Atkinson homes, since to her has been intrusted the care of almost two hundred newly born: babies and their mothers.

   For a good many months Mrs Donnelly's health had been failing and the past 3 or 4 weeks she had been in critical condition. Her body was brought to Atkinson Wednesday and funeral services will be held this morning at St Josephs Catholic Church, conducted by Rev Fr John Pieper. Burial will be made in St Joseph's Cemetery.

   Mrs Donnelly was a very active member of organizations with which she was affiliated. For 15 years she led the choir at St Joseph's Church. She was a charter member of the Royal Highlanders Lodge. During the World War she was one of the principal workers in Atkinson Red Cross chapter and of late years had taken active part in Legion Auxiliary work. While in Omaha she was connected actively with the War Mothers. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers society of St Joseph's parish, and gained no little fame in this community as a maker of good coffee when this society had charge of suppers and bazaars.

   Mary Ann O'Brien was born: in Montreal, Canada, June 3,1857. At the age of 5 she moved to Chicago with her parents, Mr and Mrs John O'Brien. In that city she grew up and in 1877 she became the bride of Michael McQuilken. To this union were born: Agness, now living in Omaha, and John, now a resident of Norfolk. The father died in 1883 and in the same year the mother and children: came to Atkinson. Here in 1886 she was married to Geo Donnelly, and to this union were born: Mamie, Emeline, George, William, and Charles. Between the years 1890 and 1901 the family lived at Hennessey, Okla. Mr Donnelly died in Atkinson, Aug 30,1918. He was the first victim of influenza in this community.

   Mrs Donnelly is survived by five children, Mrs Mamie Grooms and Miss Agness McQuilken of Omaha, John McQuilken of Norfolk, Charles Donnelly of Bonesteel, SD, and William Donnelly of Norfolk. One daughter, Emeline Donnelly died in childhood and a son, George Donnelly died in infancy. Two sisters, Mrs Agness Plunkett and Mrs Nellie Green live in Washington, DC and one, Mrs John Bond, lives near Atkinson. Mrs W J Griffin of Atkinson is a niece. Five grandchildren: also survive her. They are Stella Grooms of Omaha, Joan, Charles, Eugene and Nancy Ann Donnelly, children: of Mr and Mrs Charles Donnelly; Elva Marie daughter of Mr and Mrs Wm Donnelly.

   All the children: are here to attend the funeral today.

AUSTIN FLEMING PASSES AWAY AFTER OPERATION

   Austin Fleming passed away at the Atkinson General Hospital Saturday, March 23, where on the preceding Monday he had been operated upon and greatly relieved of suffering from intestinal tuberculosis. His recovery following the operation was little expected. Mr Fleming had been in ill health the past few years and the last year was bedfast most of the time. He is survived by his wife and two children, Violet and Bruce, students in the Atkinson public school.

   Funeral services were held Monday at Methodist Church in Atkinson. The sermon was delivered by Rev Chas Kirland, who used for his text II Kings Chapter 10 verse 15 "Is thine heart right?. Rev Kirkland received the suggestion for this text when in a conversation shortly before his death Mr Fleming made the remark that his heart was right. Rev Rasmusson assisted. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson.

   Austin Lawrence Fleming was born: in Atkinson Oct 31,1884 and lived practically his whole life in this city where he worked as a barber. At the time of his death he was 44 years of age. On May 17,1908 he was married to Celia Clare Townsend of Crawford. To them were born: two children, Violet Clare and Bruce Austin. Besides his wife and two children, Mr Fleming is survived by his father R P Fleming, a brother: Earl and a sister: Mrs J Arnette, all of Sioux City, Iowa.

   His father was in Atkinson to attend the funeral, the brother: and sister: being unable to come. Earl is at present taking treatment in a government hospital at Excelsier Springs, Mo.

   Robert Gallagher died at his home in Page, Nebr, last Monday evening after an illness of about six months of Bright's Disease. Mr Gallagher was born: in Albany, NY, Feb 18, 1846, and was one of the pioneer residents of this county. He was an old soldier and for several years was a member of the soldiers relief commission of this county. Deceased had a host of friends throughout this county who will regret to hear of his death. The funeral was held Wednesday, the remains being interred in the Cemetery at Page.

GLEN HAGLER

   After short funeral rites at the home 20 miles north of Atkinson, the body of Glen Hagler was brought to Atkinson Sunday where services were conducted at the Methodist Church by Rev S G Rasmusson. Glen, who was better known by his nickname, Mike, passed away Thursday last week, after a short illness of pneumonia. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   He was 20 years of age, having been born: in Knox County on the 30th of August, 1908. In 1919 he moved with his parents, Mr and Mrs J W Hagler, to Boyd County and in 1925 the family came to Holt County, where the family now lives. He leaves to mourn his death, his father, mother, four brothers, and three sisters. The brothers: are Floyd, Lee and Earl of the home community and Willis Hagler of Arnold, Nebr. The sisters are Effie, Lauretta, and Freda all of whom live at home with the parents. One brother, Ray, and an infant sister: preceded him in death.

MRS HAHN, HOLT COUNTY RESIDENT 50 YEARS, DEAD

   Mrs Jacob Hahn passed away at her home in Atkinson Tuesday, Feb 26, at the age of 80 years. She was a resident of Holt County for 50 years, and for 39 years has lived in Atkinson. Mr and Mrs Hahn were planning on celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this year on the 24th day of March.

   Funeral services were held yesterday at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev S G Rasmusson, and burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Mary Laubscher was born: in Sterling, Penn, Feb 2,1849. She was married to Jacob Hahn at Dunmore, Penn, in 1869. 50 years ago in March 1879, she came to Holt County with her husband and they homesteaded near Stuart, moving to Atkinson 39 years ago, where they since have resided. To Mr and Mrs Hahn 12 children: were born, 6 of whom died in infancy. Two sons, Carl M and Jesse Blaine, also preceded Mrs Hahn in death. Her husband survives together with four daughters, Marie Boettcher of Blake, Nebr. Catherine Tinker of Truman, Minn; Rose Piepenbrink of Libby, Mont, and Margaret Hudson of Atkinson. There are also 10 grandchildren. Mrs Hahn was a member of the Methodist Church of Atkinson.

DEATH OF MRS FRANK HANEL

   Mrs Elizabeth Hanel, wife of Frank Hanel, who departed this life July 5th was born: Nov 7,1861 at Denhoff, Russia.

   On May 22,1900, she was united in marriage with Mr Frank Hanel.

   To this union were born: 7 children: Frank, George, Henry, Albert, Victor, Helen, Jesse Raymond, the last named being an eight day old babe at the time of the mother's death. The one daughter died in infancy.

   Mrs Hanel was known to a large circle of friends, both in town and in the country where they resided for some years on a ranch and these, with her husband and sons, to whom she was a devoted wife and mother, her mother to whom she was a loving daugher, and other relatives, will, all mourn her untimely departure.

   Funeral services were held at St John's Lutheran Church, July 8 conducted by Pastor Rev J R Janssen. They were largely attended. Out of town relatives were her mother, Mrs Elizabeth Hettinger of Lincoln, her sisters, Mrs Mary Wolbach of Lisbon, SD; Mrs Mabel Schlanker of Bayard, Nebr. and a brother: Phillip Hettinger of Wendover, Wyo.

   Interment was made in Atkinson Cemetery.

SAMUEL HARDY DIES AT OLD SOLDIERS HOME, HOT SPRINGS

   Samuel Hardy, civil war veteran and Holt County Homesteader, died Dec the 2nd at Old Soldier's Home at Hot Springs, SD.

   Samuel R Hardy was born: Nov 18,1846 in Broadheadville, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. On Jan 1,1863 when a little past 16 years he enlisted in Co D 67th Pennsylvania Volunteers and served the war of the Rebellion, receiving his discharge at Hall's Hill, Virginia, July 14,1865.

   He was married to Nellie Jackson of Golden Hill, Wyo Co, Penn, Aug 25,1878. To them two children: were born, Katie D and John Hardy.

   In 1879 they moved to Saunders Co, Nebr, and from there to Holt County in 1883, homesteading a claim ten miles northeast of Atkinson.

   Deceased became an inmate of the Soldiers Home at Hot Springs, SD in 1916. He is survived by his daughter, Katie Gilbert and one grandson of Augusta, Kan, and two granddaughters, Mrs Nydene Reetz of Douglas, Kan and Mrs Pauline Getter of Rock, Kan and one brother: residing in Allentown, Penn.

   Interment was made in National Cemetery at Hot Springs.

STEPHEN AYERS HIATT

   Stephen A Hiatt, 81, for the past 31 years a resident of Holt County and for many years a member of the Atkinson Post Grand Army of the Republic, passed away at his home near Amelia, Nebr, last Friday, Nov the 25th.

   Stephen Ayers Hiatt was born: in Indiana, Nov 10,1846, and departed this life Nov 25,1927 at the age of 81 years and 15 days. His mother died when he was but a little child. The early years of his life were spent at Jonesboro, Indiana.

   During the Civil War he offered himself to the cause of freedom. On Aug 1,1863, he enrolled at Jonesboro, Indiana as a private under Captain E W Fluharts, Co C, 118 Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged March 1,1864 at Indianapolis, Indiana. On Feb 14,1865 he enlisted again to serve for one year under Captain John A Howards, Co G, 153 Regiment, Indian Volunteers and was discharged at Lousiville, Kentucky, Sept 4,1865.

   On April 14,1867 he was united in marraige to Elizabeth N Burch, who preceded him to the great beyond about three years ago. To this union were born: 7 children, 3 girls and 4 boys. Three of the boys died in childhood.

   In the spring of 1880 he movd to Palo Alto County, Iowa, and 3 years later to Tilden, Antelope County, Nebr. In 1892 he moved to Elgin, Nebr, and in 1896 to Holt County, Nebr. where he spent the remainder of his life.

   Early in life he became a Christian and united with the church. His life was consistent with his profession. He was a kind husband and father, and made many friends, but no enemies. All who knew him will speak of him in the highest terms. He was always ready to help in the work of the church and any other enterprise, that was for the upbuilding of the community. Although he lived a strenous life and went through many trials and hardships, he never complained. He was calm and composed under the severest tests.

   He leaves to mourn his death three brothers: and one sister, Elma Hiatt of Edmunds, Oklahoma, Leslie Hiatt of Payet, Idaho, and Arthur Hiatt and Mrs Hollingsworth of Peru, Iowa. 3 daughters and one son, Mrs Nellie Baker of Casper, Wyoming, Mrs Alwilda Mulligan, Mrs Olie Traver and Arthur Hiatt of Amelia, Nebr, besides a number of grandchildren: and other relatives and friends.

   Funeral services were held at the home Sunday, Nov 27, Otto Michel of Amelia officated. The body of the deceased was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Atkinson Cemetery, Sunday.

MRS DONALD MACLACHLAN, EARLY SETTLER, IS DEAD

   Mrs Donald MacLachlan, one of Holt County's earliest pioneer women, died Sunday at her home eight and one half miles northeast of Atkinson. Mrs MacLachlan was almost 81 years of age and lived in Holt County for 40 years. She is survived by her husband, Donald MacLachlan, and five children, David A of Des Moines, Iowa, James A, Robert H and John A and Mary L of Atkinson.

   Funeral services were held at MacLachlan home northeast of town yesterday conducted by Rev Forest A Heizer and Donald MacLachlan. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson

MRS DONALD MACLACHLAN

   Laura Wilson Hutchison was born: June 12,1848 in New Wilmington, Penn. She was of pioneer, Presbyterian, American ancestry. Her mother's grandfather, William Bennett, was born: in France in 1742. He came to America in 1760 and was a color bearer in the Battle of Bunker Hill. He served thru the war and was severly wounded in the siege of Yorktown while serving as one of Geo Washington's body guards. He was given a piece of land in Westmoreland Co, Penn for his service in the war. Here he was married and raised a large family.

   Mrs MacLachlan lost one brother: in the Civil War and her eldest son, David A, served in the 42nd Division in the World War. She was raised in a Christian home of modest refinement and culture. In early life she became a member of the United Presbyterian church. She was a good girl at home and a good pupil in school and a good student in college.

   She was a great lover of children, of the beauties of nature, and of music. Her alto was always a rich contribution to the choir and leadership.

   She was united in marriage, Nov 1,1877 to Rev Donald MacLachlan, pastor in Johnstown Center, Wis.

   She was a true helpmate in this field where he served 11 years. They came with four small sons to Holt County in the fall of 1887 in answer to a call from the United Presbyterian Church.

   These last 42 years she lived a very quiet, retiring, unselfish life. Her death came Sabbath evening, Feb 17 after a very short illness. Her age was 80 years 8 months and 5 days.

   Her husband, Donald MacLachlan, four sons, David A of Des Moines, Iowa; James A, Robert H and John A of Atkinson, one daughter, Mary L of Atkinson, 2 granddaughters,Laura R and Roma ; two brothers: T M Hutchison and Rev A P Hutchison of Penn survive her.

DEATH OF MARTIN REGAL

   Martin Regal, a resident of Holt County since 1882, passed away at his home in Atkinson Thursday, Jan 13, aged 85 years 2 months 2 days. 

   Deceased was born: in Moravia (under the Austrian Crown), Nov 11,1835. He was wedded to Victoria Kopec in their native land in 1863 and in 1871 emigrated to America. To them 10 children: were born, 6 of whom together with the widow, survive to mourn the death of a husband and father. Four daughters, Mrs Mary Ziska, Mrs Anton Ziska, Mrs Josie Johnson of Atkinson and Mrs Agnes Wallent of Ponoka, Canada, and two sons James and John R of Atkinson, all of whom were present except Mrs Wallant, who owing to distance was unable to come. 

   Martin Regal settled on land 7 miles west of Atkinson in 1882 and where he continued to reside until a few years ago when he retired from the farm and moved to Atkinson. 

   Funeral services were conducted at St Joseph Church Monday, Jan 17, and interment was made in Atkinson Cemetery.

ANOTHER OF HOLT COUNTY'S PIONEER WOMEN PASSES

   Mrs Martin Regal, who has lived almost half a century in Holt County, died at the age of 88 years Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs Joseph Ziska, 7 miles southwest of Atkinson, with whom she had lived for more than a year. She had suffered a gradual failing in health for a number of years.

   Mrs Regal and her husband and family came to Holt County in 1880 and settled on a homestead 7 miles west of Atkinson. Her husband died about 8 years ago.

   Victoria Kopeck was born: in Scheptoev, Czecho-Slovakia, in the year 1841. In 1866 she became the bride of Martin Regal and they came to America in 1877. For three years they lived on a farm near Schuyler, then moved to Holt County where they struggled through the hardships of pioneer life. Six children: survive. They are Mrs John Ziska, Mrs Joe Ziska, Mrs Josie Johnson, James Regal and John Regal, all of Atkinson, and Agnes who lives in Canada. One daugher, Grace, died about 20 years ago. Sixteen grandchildren: and fifteen great grandchildren: also survive her.

   Funeral services were held in Atkinson Wednesday at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Rev Fr John Pieper conducted the rites and used for the text of his sermon Matth 11:20 "Come to me, all you that labor and are heavily laden and I will refresh you". Burial was made in St Joseph's Cemetery.

TRAGIC DEATH IN OMAHA OF CHARLES T RICHARDS IS SHOCK TO COMMUNITY

   Shocked Wednesday morning of news of the sudden death of Charles Richards, this community became one enveloped in sadness when that afternoon it was learned that the boy, a student at the American Business college, Omaha, ended his life by gas asphyxiation after a quarrel with Gladys Todd, his sweetheart of high school days in Atkinson and also a student in the Omaha school.

   After writing a farewell note to the girl he went to the bathroom in his rooming house where he inhaled the gas thru a rubber tube. There he was found by his roommate about 7:30 Wednesday. He was 20 years old, the only son of Mr and mrs Merle A Richards of Atkinson, and Miss Todd is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J F Todd of Nebraska City, who until last spring were also residents of this city. Gladys and Charles went thru Atkinson high school together. She a graduate last spring and he the year before.

   The heartbroken girl and the boy's father came home yesterday morning on the same train which brought the body from Omaha. The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Richard's home 1 mile north of town. The service will be conducted by Rev S G Rasmusson, pastor of the Atkinson Methodist Church of which Charles became a member a few years ago.

   Tuesday evening Charles, who was rooming at 210 South 36th Street, went to see Gladys. She scolded him for breaking a promise to her and sent him home. Charles and his roommate were awake until about 2:30. Charles badly broken up because he thot he had lost the love of Gladys. At 6 o'clock, when the alarm clock went off Charles got up but his roommate went back to sleep. It was then that he went to the bathroom, put the tube in his mouth and inhaled the gas.

   Word of his death was received here about 10 o'clock and his father, and A J Atkins and Roy Johns left that noon in the latter's car for Omaha. In a letter to his mother, received here Tuesday, Charles was enthusiastic about the success he was having in school. Since going back after the Christmas vacation he had moved from a dormitory to a new rooming place and he remarked in the letter that he had a nice place to stay and a good roommate, and thought he would get along fine.

   Charles Thomas Richards, only son of Mr and Mrs Merle A Richards, was born: at Atkinson on the first of August, 1908. All his life he has lived in this community, and his first absence from home for any length of time was begun last fall when he went to Omaha to attend school. During his high school days here he was one of the popular studens and took promenent part in athletics on the high school track squad and baseball team. Later he pitched baseball for the Atkinson town team.

   Charles is survived by his mother and father, 3 sisters, Dorrit 12, Gwendolyn 10, and Jessie Ilene 6; his grandmother, Ms Lou Ella Brook; grandparents Mr and Mrs Thomas Richards, all of Atkinson. One uncle, LeRoy C Richards and an aunt Mrs CC Crippen, live here and an uncle Melvin Richards, lives at Sac City, Iowa and an aunt Mrs Henry Mathis lives at Pasadena, Cal. Mrs Cora Brook of Boulder, Colo arrived last night. She is an aunt of Mrs Richards.

MRS NICHOLAS SCHWINDT

   Amalia Krieger was born: March 24,1875 in the German colony Norka, in Russia, and died at the Stuart hospital, Stuart, Nebr, on Sunday Jan 29, following a surgical operation, performed on Thursday, Jan 26. Her age was 52 years, 10 months 5 days.

   She came to America in 1898, making her home in Lincoln, Nebr, where she was married on Feb 26,1901 to mr Nicholas Schwindt. To this union 3 children: were born, Anna, Amalia an dJohn, all of whom survive. In 1911 the family came to Holt County. In 1919 she willingly took into her home four children: of her deceased brother. They are Pauline Krieger, John, Frieda and Manuel Krieger. These children: were under her care until the time of her death and they mourn the loss of her with her own children.

   She also leaves to mourn her death, her aged mother, one brother: and one sister: in Russia an done brother: in Lincoln, Nebr.

   Funeral services were held on Tuesday from St John's Lutheran Church in Atkinson, conducted by pastor, Rev Wm G Vahle. Interment was made in the cemetery at Phoenix.

   Carl Parsons Scofield was born: in Herman, NY, St Lawrence Co, July 7,1885 and died at the home of his brother, Frank Scofield, Feb 25,1921, aged 35 years 7 months 18 days.

   When about 3 years of age the deceased came with his parents from NY and settled in Columbus, Nebr. He resided there until about 5 years ago when he came to Holt County to live.

   He was stricken with hemorrhage of the brain Sunday, Feb 20 and passed away the following Friday, Feb 25.

   He leaves to mourn his loss the following immediate relatives, Frank, Edward, Gertrude, Bessie of Atkinson, a twin brother, Earl of Omaha, and a brother: and sister: of Columbus, also a brother-in-law Mr C E Knox and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday, Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Charles Wesley Tullis was born: in Taney County, Mo, Aug 1,1842 and died Nov 22,1909, at his home two and one half miles southeast of Mineola, Nebr. The deceased leaves a wife and three children. He enlisted in the Union Army, April 3, 1861, serving until the close of the war when he was honorably discharged. He died as he lived without a complaint. He acknowledged a loving Jesus and died at peace with God.

   The funeral services were held at the Mineola Methodist Church, Rev Bartley Blain spoke briefly of his acquaintances with the deceased who was among the first settlers. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev Joseph Stopford of Page, Nebr. Throughout it was a very fitting service.

Here thye homesteaded on the land which they made their home up to about one year ago, when they moved to town, where Mrs Ulrich died April 13,1909, being nearly 55 years of age. To Mr and Mrs Ulrich were born: 8 children, 6 boys and 2 girls, all of whom, with her husband survive her. It is given to mankind to live for 3 score years and ten. Mrs Ulrich was called away 15 years before her alloted time, but it is given to but a few women to do as much for the world as has Mrs Ulrich. She with her husband, not only braved the trails and dangers of frontier life, being the oldest settlers in this neighborhood, but, she has raised a family of which she well was proud, having given to the world six stalwart boys, now grown to manhood, all a credit to their mother's careful training. Henry, George and Frederick of Scranton, Penn, who are engaged in a maufacturing enterprise, and are quite successful. Next comes William who is employed by the Wm Krotter Co here; Charles who graduated from Stuart school and now attends the State University; and Frank who is still at home. Of the girls, Mary and Clair, both grown to womanhood. Mary is a sister: of the order of St Francis of LaFayette, Indiana, and is devoting her life to others. Clara, the youngest girl, is at the home of her parents, and very deeply mourns the loss of her beloved mother. It was thought that Mrs Ulrich, who has been ill for a number of months, was improving, and the end came entirely unexpected. Clara, who was just recovering from a severe illness was particularily affected by her mother's death and is still very ill as a result of the shock. All of the children: except Mary were present at the funeral which occurred Saturday in St Boniface Church, of which Mrs Ulrich was a devout member. Adam Splitzer, a brother: of Mrs Ulrich, Mrs N Kampff, a sister: of Mr Ulrich, and Mrs Charles Kempff, a nephew of Mr Ulrich, all of Penn, were also here to attend the funeral. Mrs Ulrich is survived by her mother, two sisters, and four brothers, all of whom reside in Pennsylvania.

DEATH OF A J WILLIAMS

   A J Williams, the subject of this sketch, was born: at Turin, NY, Aug 18,1832 and died at Atkinson Oct 9,1914, aged 82 years, 1 month and 21 days. The deceased moved to Waukegan, ? when 16 years of age where he lived for 9 years, when he removed to Iowa.

   He was married to Laura Williams, Oct 6,1881. To this union were born: 4 sons and 2 daughters, who together with his wife and four brothers: and a sister: survive him. G R of Omaha, Dr J J of Wayne, E R of Randolph, Nebr, E B of Sand Point, Idaho; Mrs C J Dolan of Randolph. These were present to assist in laying him to rest for the last long sleep whose awakening is in realms supernal.

   The community was greatly shock to learn that Mr Williams had passed away las Friday. H ehad gone in and out among us in apparently in good health, and was suddenly stricken down. The blow tails with double weight on the family. The shock is almost more than they can bear. They have the utmost sympathy of the community.

   Mr Williams belonged to the Methodist Church of which he was a faithful member for many years. He also belonged to several fraternal orders among them the M W A which had charge of the burial services.

   Although a citizen of Nebr nearly all of his married life, the deceased had lived only four years in and near Atkinson. Near the closing scenes of his last actions he was laid to rest. The funeal services were conducted from the Methodist Church by his pastor, W S York, the body being interred in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friend and brother: farewell, We shall meet but we shall miss him. There will be one vacant chair. We shall linger to caress him. When we breathe our evening prayer.

STROKE IS FATAL TO MRS W E WILLIAMS
ATKINSON MOURNS SUDDEN DEATH OF NATIVE DAUGHTER; FUNERAL TO BE HELD THIS AFTERNOON

   Atkinson was grieved Tuesday afternoon to learn of the sudden death of Mrs W E Williams, a native daughter of this city; and only child of one of its pioneer merchants. Mrs Williams passed away that afternoon at her home, the cause of her death being a cerebral hemorrhage. Her49th birthday anniversary would have been next Tuesday, Sept 19.

   Mrs Williams was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs A T Hart who until Mr Hart's death in 1924 conducted this city's only exclusive men's clothing store. She and her family resided in Omaha until last April when they moved here and opened the Williams 5 cent to $1 Store located in the A T Hart building.

   Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Presbyterian Church, Atkinson. Burial will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Grace W Hart was born: at Atkinson on Sept 19,1890 and passed away suddenly Tuesday, Sept 12,1939 at her home in this city after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. She died at the age of 48 years 11 months 23 days.

   She was the only child of Alexander T Harft, pioneer Atkinson merchant and June Hart, both of whom preceded her in death.

   She grew to young womanhood in Atkinson, attended the public schools here and was graduated in 1909. For several years after graduation she worked with her father in the clothing store which he established in Atkinson in the early days and operated until his death in 1924.

   In 1917 she went to Omaha and entered Wise Memorial hospital as a student. She finished her training in 1920 and for a short time afterward was in charge of a hospital in Arapahoe, Nebr. Early in 1921 she returned to Omaha to accept the position of night supervisor at Wise Memorial Hospital. Shortly after that she was made superintendent of the hospital and she served in that position until May 1922.

   On June 5,1922 she was united in marriage to W E Williams of Omaha, the ceremony being performed at Presbyterian parsonage in O'Neill. She and her husband made their home in Omaha and continued to reside in that city until April 11,1939 when they moved to Atkinson and established a mercantile business in the building which her father erected and in which he conducted a clothing business for so many years.

   When she was a girl she united with the Presbyterian church in Atkinson.

   She leaves to mourn her death her husband, one daughter, Phyllis Jean born: July 13,1925 at Omaha, aunts and uncles including Mr and Mrs C J Wilson of Atkinson; Mrs Clara Crossman Pattison of Omaha; James Hart of Charlotte, NC; Clara Wehrle of Indiana,Penn; Will Wehrle of Punxsatawhey, Penn; Raymond M Crossman of Omaha, a cousin and many other relatives and a large circle of friends.

EWING SOLDIER SLAIN IN BATTLE ON FRENCH FRONT
ONE OF FOUR SONS OF NEBRASKA COUPLE IN SERVICE MAKES SUPREME SACRIFICE; TOWN MOURNS

   Charles F Wiseman killed in action.

   This telegram was received Sunday by Mr and Mrs George Wiseman, Ewing, Nebr. from the War Department, informing them of the death of their son while fighting the hun "somewhere in France". No further details were given. his death also was reported int he causualty list given to the Associated Press.

   Charles was one of four sons of Mr and Mrs Wiseman in the service. One brother, Earl, is in the same company in France in which Charles was serving at the time of his death. Two other brothers, Otto and Roy, are in the army and navy, respectively.

   Charles and Earl, together with four other Ewing boys, were the first to answer the call of their country from that town. All enlisted at the same time in April 1917. Charles and Earl were sent to Fort Bliss where they became part of Company K, 16th Infantry and were sent across on June 12 in General Pershing's Rainbow division. Charles was 27 years old. His parents are retired farmers.

   Business houses in Ewing Monday closed for one hour in honor of the dead soldier. All flags in town were lowered to halfmast. Memorial services for Wiseman will be held next Sunday at Methodist Episcopal Church.

MRS GUS WOERNER PASSED AWAY SUNDAY
HAD BEEN ILL SEVERAL MONTHS WITH DIABETES, BUT DEATH WAS UNEXPECTED

   Mrs Gus Woerner passed away at her home in Atkinson quite unexpectedly Sunday, June 30, after an illness of several months from diabetes. Although she had been ailing since February and partly blinded the past two months from effects of the disease she had not been bedfast and the day before her death had been to a doctor in Stuart for treatment. Mrs Woerner was 51 years of age and is survived by her husband, and four grown children: by a former marriage.

   Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday and the same day at the Methodist Church in Stuart. Both services were conducted by Rev Bell and interment was made in Stuart, formerly her home town.

   Mr and Mrs Woerner have lived in Atkinson four years.

   Jessie May Spragg was born: Aug 26,1877 at Newell, Buena Vista County, Iowa, the daughter of Chris and Mary A Spragg. Forty six years ago, when a child five years of age, she came to Nebraska with her parents and has since lived in various places in this part of the state, her home town, being Stuart.

   When in early womanhood she was married to Lee Menuey and to them were born: four children, all of whom survive her and were here for the funeral. They are LeRoy Menuey of Rapid City, SD; Chris Menuey of Hot Springs, SD; Earl Menuey of Casper, Wyo; Mrs Ethel Cadwaddler of Stuart.

   In 1922 at Stanton she was married to Gus Woerner of West Point, where for a time they lived. Besides her husband and children: she leaves her father Chris Spragg; two sisters, Mrs Pete Lutter of Parker, SD; and Mrs John Papke of Winner; one brother, H C Spragg of Parmice, SD, all of whom were here to attend the funeral.

   For the past 8 weeks Mrs LeRoy Menuey of Rapid City, SD had been at the Woerner home helping take care of Mrs Woerner.

   Anton Wondercheck, 92, died suddenly Tuesday March 26, at the farm home five miles southwest of Atkinson where he had resided the past half century. Funeral sevices will be held Saturday at Methodist Church, Atkinson. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Mr Wondercheck was born: in Czechoslovakia 92 years ago. He was married to Anna Stetla Hunacek in Vienna, Austria. on June 30,1878. They emigrated to America in 1879 and resided in the city of Chicago for 6 years. In 1885 they came to Holt County and took a homestead five miles southwest of Atkinson, where Mr Wondercheck resided until his death.

   Mr Wondercheck was preceded in death by his wife on May 4,1928 and by one child, Leopoldine, who died in infancy. Surviving him are 9 children. They are Mrs Mary Smolik of Hyannis; Edward of Atkinson; Mrs Emma Kyte of Casper, Wyo; Mrs Anna Bedwell of Sheridan, Wyo; Frank of Atkinson; Arthur of Palmer; William of Newman Grove; John of Atkinson; Minnie of Seattle, Wash. A large number of grandchildren: and great grandchildren: also survive him. All of the children: except Mrs Kyte and Mrs Bedwell are expected to be here for the funeral services.

ED WONDERCHECK DIES SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME
ATKINSON FARMER AND RESIDENT OF THIS COMMUNITY OVER 50 YEARS IS FOUND DEAD IN BED

   Edward V Wondercheck, 57, was found dead in bed at his farm home eight miles northeast of Atkinson Tuesday morning, Sept 12. Apparently he had suffered a heart attack.

   Mr Wondercheck was nearly a lifelong resident of this community coming here with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Anton Wondercheck, when he was four years of age.

   Funeral services were held Thursday at Presbyterian Church in Atkinson. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Edward Victor Wondercheck was born: in Chicago, Illinois, on Dec 24,1881, and passed away Sept 12,1939 at his home northeast of Atkinson, at the age of 57 years, 8 months 20 days.

   When he was four years of age he came to Holt County with his parents who took a homestead southwest of Atkinson in 1885. On Nov 23,1911 he was united in marriage to Katherien Frances Husak. In 1918 they moved to Stuart where they lived a few years, then returned to Atkinson where he resided until his death.

   Surviving him are his wife, six children, Mrs Emma Zahradnicek, Mrs Ila Zahradnicek, John, Edward, Frank, Robert of Atkinson, three grandchildren, Nile Owen and Edna Zahradnicek and Theodore Zahradnicek; four sisters, Mrs Mary Smolik of Hyannis; Mrs Emma Kyte of Casper, Wyo; Mrs Anna Bedwell of Sheridan, Wyo; Mrs Minnie Strode of Dwight, Nebr; four brothers, Frank and John of Atkinson; Athur of Palmer; William of Newman Grove, and a host of friends.

   His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

   Mrs Anton Wonderchek, a resident of Atkinson for 43 years, passed away at her home in the city Friday, the 4th inst, aged 74 years.

   Anna Stella Hanacek was born: in Vienna, Austria, June 30,1878. They emigrated to America in 1879 and resided in the city of Chicago, Ill for 6 years, moving then to Atkinson.

   They resided on a homestead 5 miles southwest of Atkinson until about 6 years ago when she moved into town and has made her home with her daughter, Miss Minnie Wonderchek.

   Deceased was a member of the Bohemian fraternal order ZCBJ. In the funeral service Rev Peterson spoke of the fine Christian character of Mrs Wonderchek and gave a brief survey of her life, mentioning the hardships endured by the pioneers in the work of making homes and rearing families in the new country.

   Surviving her are her husband and 9 children. They are Mrs Mary Smolik of Tryon, Nebr; Edward of Atkinson; Mrs Emma Kyte of Casper, Wyo; Mrs Anna Bedwell of Sheridan, Wyo; Frank of Atkinson; Arthur of Superior, Nebr; William of Boone, Nebr; John and Minnie of Atkinson. also 32 grandchildren: and 1 great grandchild. Their eldest child Leopoldine died in infancy in Chicago.

   After a short service at the home funeral services were held at Methodist Church, Atkinson; Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery. All of the children: were present at the funeral.

In loving memory of our sister, Mrs Gertrude Yelsma.

Dear Sister, gone before us We cannot wish you back,
Tho' now in our deep sorrows
The future seems so black.
O'er us dark clouds seem soaring,
O'er Thee, the skies are bright.
And thanks to God are pouring,
From our sad hearts tonight.
Thanks for relief from sorrow
Thanks for Thy home above,
That for Thee no dark tomorrow
Casts a shadow o'er His love.
Today we know Thee better,
And in spite of our lonely pain.

OBITUARY

   Edith Brethower was born: Jan 19,1869, died May 23,1906, aged 37 years, 4 months and 4 days.

   She was married to Yelle Yelsma in 1893 and was the mother of 7 children.

   Funeral services were conducted by T W Bowen, from the Presbyterian Church, Saturday, May 26, and the remains interred in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Little Keith Alton York, child of Mr and Mrs A H York, was born: on May 3 and died May 9,1914, living just a week. The funeral was held from the house on Sunday, conducted by Rev Cunningham of Presbyterian Church and the little one laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.
