Akin, Benjamin Franklin
Dec 20,1894, Atkinson Graphic

DIED

At the residence of his son, Delbert, in this village, Dec 16,1894, Benjamin Franklin Akin, aged 62 years, 4 months and 16 days.

The deceased was born Aug 1,1832 at Spring Creek, Warren Co, Penn. His ancestors were numbered among the pioneers of the Brokenstraw valley and were important factors in the early development of the then great lumbering resources of that region. They were men of strong physical mold and keen intellectual perception and obtained enviable notoriety far beyond the local limits of the grand old hills that skirted the inviting valley where the subject of this sketch was reared. One of his uncles was a man of remarkable inventive genius and merchanical skills, and in the latter years of the 30's was famed among river men on the Allegheny and Ohio as constructor of a model steamboat, in which the propelling power was successfully applied from a small upright stationary engine, the result of his inventive genius and skillful handiwork.

The deceased came to the west with the great flood tide of emigration in 1858, an had the pleasure of seeing and to a considerable extent participate in the wonderful developments of this vast industrial empire.

He was a man unassuming in his manners, temperate and frugal in his habits and congenial in his intercourse with his fellow men. Impressive funeral services were had, Rev Blackburn delivering an appropriate and touching discourse, after which his remains, followed by relatives and a large number of friends, were conveyed to, and interred in, the Atkinson Cemetery.

CLIPPING A REMINDER OF FATAL CAVE IN
TELLS OF ACCIDENT NEAR ATKINSON IN 80'S THAT COST TWO LIVES

(Norfolk News)

One of the incidents that the Floyd Collins tragedy will recall to the minds of old settlers in this part of the state occurred near Atkinson in the early 80's and is described in the following clipping from the Niobrara Pioneer kindly sent to the News by Mrs William Hubbard of Lynch.

"Word reaches us from Atkinson of the sad death of two brothers by the name of Biglow. They were digging a well last Thursday and had reached the depth of 25 feet, when the quicksand gave way burying the unfortunate men in the bowels of the earth. No one was near when the accident took place, but when discovered both were alive, although one was badly hurt by falling timbers.

"Willing hands went to work to rescue the brothers, and had nearly succeeded in reaching them when the sand again filled up the well. By this time one hundred and fifty people had arrived at the scene of the accident, and fresh hands took hold of the shovels, but all to no avail.

"On Saturday evening, about 9 o'clock, one of the men in the well called to his friends to do all in their power to rescue him; that he could live but a short time longer; that his brother had died the day before from injuries received when the well caved. Feeling sure that nothing could be done he bid his family and friends good by. Nothing more was heard, and on the following day both men were taken out and buried immediately. They leave large families, who have the sympathy of all in this their sore bereavement.

Mrs Hubbard has been keeping clippings of interesting events for 44 years.

John F Brady, pioneer Atkinson business man and ranch owner, died Tuesday morning at his home here. He was almost 74 years of age. His death was caused by pneumonia, although he had been seriously ill and bedfast most of the time for more than a year, suffering a severe heart attack on July 19,1930.

Mr Brady had been a resident of Atkinson for 48 years. Probably no Holt County pioneer had a wider acquaintance among ranchmen and sportsmen over the state of Nebraska than did Mr Brady. At one time the Brady ranch was the largest in this section of the state and had the largest herd of fine Aberdeen Angus cattle.

Besides his ranching interests, Mr Brady conducted various business enterprises in Atkinson during the many years of his residence here. Among them were a grocery store, the flour mill and a real estate and grain business. Of late years, he and his son, Frank J Brady have conducteed a hay, grain and coal business here in addition to the ranch, which is 25 miles southwest of Atkinson.

Mr Brady was born Oct 20,1857 in Kankakee, Ill. He was the only child of Benjamin and Mary Brady. In 1883, when he was 26 years of age, he came to Atkinson and took a homestead 7 miles northeast of town. A few years later he entered into a partnership with the late Howard Miller in a grocery store which was located in the building now occupied by Anton Ahle's harness store.

In 1886, Mr Brady went to Joliet, Ill, and there was married to Miss Ella Shaw on Sept 8 that year. A year later he and his bride came back to Atkinson to make their home and again Mr Brady went into business with Howard Miller, this time, a real estate and grain office. Mr Miller later moved to Battle Creek, where he owned a lumber yard. He died there several years ago.

In 1891 and '92 Mr Brady owned the Atkinson flour mills. In the following year he established the ranch which for years identified hi as one of north Nebraska's leading cattle raisers. Starting with 160 acres, which he purchased in 1893, he developed the property and added to it until the Brady ranch consisted of ten thousand acres of cattle land.

On this ranch not many years ago, Mr Brady had one of the largest herds of black Aberdeen Angus cattle in this part of the state. More than nine hundred head of them grazed on the meadows of the ranch. Most of this herd was sold two years ago.

A year ago last January Mr Brady was quite badly hurt when he was struck by an automobile in Atkinson. After that time his health failed rapidly and he suffered a heart attack in July of that year from which he never fully recovered.

He is survived by his wife, who has been tireless in her efforts to keep him comfortable during his long illness. 3 children also survive him. They are Mrs H W Creavers of Omaha, Frank J of Atkinson, Dr Rolland, an interne in the Salt Lake CIty general hospital.

Funeral services were held at the home in Atkinson Thursday. Mr Brady had long been a member of the Atkinson Masonic Order and the lodge conducted rites at the home and at the grave.
