     A coroner's inquest was held here last Saturday night over the remains of the man killed at the gravel pit. The jury brought in a verdict exonerating the railroad company, as the evidence showed that he met his death by his own carelessness. No information as to his identity could be produced and he was buried Monday in the Woodlawn Cemetery at the expense of the railroad company.

JOHN ZAHRADNICEK

     John Zahradnicek was born at Rimore, Province of Moravia, Austria, Aug 10,1857, died at his home, Aug 2nd 1921.

     He emigrated to America in 1875 with his parents and settled near Schuyler, Colfax Co, Nebr, and in the year of 1880 he came to Holt County where he filed on a homestead 4 miles sw of Atkinson, where he has resided for a period of 41 years. Droughts and a multitude of other discouragements failed altogether in dislodging this sturdy pioneer from his moorings, here he fought the battles of life, reared his family and made a place for himself as a valuable citizen of the commonwealth of Nebraska.

     About three weeks ago he complained of throat trouble which became aggravateddeveloping into an acute stage of infection and despite all medical skills he departed this lfe on Tuesday evening leaving to mourn his death, his wife, and 11 children. Mrs Elizabeth Ellsworth of Mobrifge, SD; Frank A of Carter, South Dakota; Mrs Mary Ashby of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs Anna Rosecrans of Billings, Montana; Mrs Rose Leonard of Casper, Wyoming; John, Louis, Mildred, Edward, Theodore and Charles of Atkinson; two brothers, Anton Zahradnicek of Sheridan, Wyoming and Mike Zahradnicek of Atkinson, and one sisters, Mrs Anna Fuller of Lysite, Wyoming. Four grandchildren and a great company of friends.

     Funeral services were conducted from the home on Thursday afternoon in charge of Rev E L Peterson of the Methodist Church. Interment was made in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

     Ted Wright of Atkinson was killed yesterday morning in an accident at the Lyman Ritchie gravel pit near Meadow Grove when he became entangled in a cable to which a team of horses was attached. He was rushed to a hospital in Tilden but lived only 20 minutes after arriving there.

     Thus tragic death strikes the Siemsen family of Atkinson twice within a week. Ted was the husband of Dora Siemsen, daughter of Mr and Mrs K F Siemsen. He was here Monday to attend the funeral of Karl Siemsen, who died last Friday after receiving a broken neck when he slipped from a diving board at Long Pine a few weeks ago.

     Mr Wright about 25 years of age, was foreman of the crew at the gravel pit. The accident happened Thursday morning and he suffered severe scalp wounds, crushed chest and fractured leg. He had been employed by the Lyman Ritchie company for several years.

     Mrs Wright was notified immediately after the accident and one of the members of the gravel crew drove to Atkinson to take her to the hospital. Her husband died, however, before they reached there. Two small children, Robert 8 months and Lewis 6 years also survive him.

     The body will be brought to Atkinson for burial. Funeral services will be held Sunday.

FUNERAL SERVICE HELD FOR ACCIDENT VICTIM
TED WRIGHT, KILLED IN GRAVEL PIT MISHAP LAST WEEK, IS BURIED HERE

     Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Atkinson,last Sunday afternoon for Ted Wright, 30, who was fatally injured Thursday morning, last week, when he was caught in a dragline cable in the Lyman Ritchie Gravel pit near Meadow Grove.

     Mr Wright was foreman of the crew. He was attempting to straighten a kink in the cable when he was caught and drawn into the drum aound which it wound. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital in Tilden.

     Theodore Elmer Wright, son of Mr and Mrs Chas E Wright of Culbertson, was born July 15,1901 at Elgin, Nebr, He had made Atkinson his home for several years, the Wright family having formerly lived on a farm near here. The past 3 years he had been employed by the Lyman Ritchie Sand and Gravel Company and had been foreman at several of the company's pits in various locations in Nebraska.

     He was baptized in the Christian faith in the Baptist church at Oakdale, Nebr, in 1908. On Feb 28,1925 he was married to Miss Dora Siemsen, daughter of Mr and Mrs K F Siemsen of Atkinson. He is survived by his wife, and two children, Lewis Arthur, aged 6 years, and Robert Charles, age 8 months.

     2 sisters, Elsie Rumm of Milwaukee, Wis, Opal of Culbertson. 3 brothers Howard, Chester and Lyle, of Culbertson He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, 1 brother, Pearl, Lester, Augusta.

     Mr Wright was well known in and around Atkinson and had many friends who held him in high esteem and who sympathize with his family and other relatives in their sad hour

DIED

     Of apoplexy at his home in Atkinson, Monday, Feb 12, John F Wright, aged 64 years.

     For 18 years he had been a resident of Deadwood, SD and removed to Atkinson nearly 2 years ago. For the past 6months he had been a resident of Omaha, returning to Atkinson about 1 month ago.

     Mr Wright was known as a very kind and generous man, loved and respected by all who knew him, an dit was a severe shock to his many friends when they heard of his sudden death. He was on our streets Monday several times and seemed to be feeling as well as usual, he went home, laid down on the bed, complained of feeling a little chilly and in a short time was found dead.

     The coroner was quickly summoned and an inquest held an dtheir verdict was given as above stated.

     The funeral was held from the house Tuesday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery by the side of the wife that preceded him in death last May.

     He was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.

OBITUARY - WRIGHT

     Rosetthir S Pettis was born at Sermeria, NY, June 7,1848, and died in Atkinson, May 8,1911, at the age of 63 years, 11 months 22 days.

     When 11 years old she moved with her parents to Columbus, Wis and there grew up to womanhood. There also on May 8,1862 she was married to Byron W Jones. To this union was born 7 children, Edward J , Edwin S, Flora A, Rosetthia E, Jennie R, Nellie M, Minnie M, of whom only 2, Flora and Minnie, are now living, the others having passed to the great beyond before. Her husband also died in1876.

     In 1892 she was united in wedlock again to John F Wright, who with the two living daughters, are left to mourn the loss of a faithful wife and loving mother.

     She lived at Deadwood, SD during the past 18 years, but removed to Atkinson in hopes of regaining her health on May 11,1910. But her broken health continued, until at last she was gone.

     She was a member of the Methodist Church, and lived a faithful life, and in death doubtless entered upon that well earned rest which the Creator has reserved for all who love him.

OBITUARY

     Woods - at the home of his father, Mr Seth Woods, in this city on Friday, April 3,1895; Herman B Woods, aged 27 years and 6 months.

     Deceased was born in McDough County, Illinois NOV 1,1867 moving with his parents to Butler County in Nov 1882, and from there to Atkinson in Oct 1884, where he resided till the day of his death.

     He had suffered for 9 long, weary weeks with bilious reritent fever, but was not considered dangerously ill until a few days before the end when he was taken suddenly worse and sank rapidly. He remained conscious to the last.

     His death has cast a gloom over the entire community, as he was beloved by all and numbered among his friends all who knew him.

REMOVE BODY OF SOLDIER TO HOME CEMETERY

     The body of Private George Williamson, son of Mr and Mrs J C Williamson of Atkinson was removed from the military burying ground at Ft Robinson Tuesday and re interred in Woodlawn Cemetery at Atkinson Tuesday afternoon.

     The body was met here by the relatives and the company of Home Guards in uniform. Services were held at the grave and the bells of the city tolled a requiem for the dead soldier boy.

     Private Williamson died at Ft Robinson May 31,1917 of spinal meningitis. His name appears in our record as the first Holt County soldier in the present war to die in the service of his country.

     Died at her home in Atkinson on Friday evening, July 20th, 1900, Mrs Archibald Walrath, after a lingering illness of several months. We desire to join the many fiends of the family in extending sympathy to them in their hour of bereavement. For particulars see obit.

     Mrs Lany Kretser Walrath was born in Montgomery County, NY, June 25th, 1847, and died at her home in Atkinson July 19th, 1900. Her age was 53 years and 24 days. She was married to Archibald Walrath, at Utica, NY, Jan 3rd, 186?. She was the mother of four children but only one is living at the present time. About 15 years ago, Mr Walrath moved west for his wife's health and finally located in Atkinson where he has resided ever since. Her last sickness was long and painful. No one really knows what she suffered. The funeral services were held from the Methodist Church Saturday July 21, conducted by Rev A E Talley, who preached from the testiment: "I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness". She was prepared to go. She will be missed as a loving wife, a devoted mother and a dutiful neighbor.

DEATH COMES IN HOUSE IN WHICH HE HAD LIVED FOR FORTY FIVE YEARS

     Martin H Walrath, one of this community's lifelong residents, passed away at his home on the east edge of town Wed morning Mr Walrath had been in failing health for more than a year, heart trouble making him practically an invalid for most of the time since he was stricken. His death came in the home in which he had lived for 45 years and where he and his wife reared a family of 7 children, all of whom are living and are at home today with their mother.

     Funeral services will be held this morning at the Walrath home. Burial will be made in Woodlawn Cem.

     Probably no personage in Atkinson was better known than Mart Walrath. His 45 years of life in Atkinson is a story of friendliness to everyone and among the many folks of this community that love the sport of fishing, Mart rated in skill with the best.

     At the service this morning the following story of Mr Walrath's life will be read by the minister.

     "Martin Henry Walrath was born at Inhams Mills, NY on Jan 15,1878 and passed out of this life at 4 o'clock Wed morning Feb 26,1930 at the age of 52 years.

     Mr Walrath came to Atkinson with his parents when he was 7 years old. In the next year they built their home here and he has lived in that same house ever since. In his early life he attended school here and was a student in Atkinson High School.

     On May 20,1900 he was married to Miss Coila Uttley of O'Neill. Their 7 children are all living and are with their mother here today. They are Mrs Leola Tapscott of Bellflower, Cal; Helen of North Platte, Nebr; Mrs Maudie Silverstrand of Atkinson; and Thelma, Roberta, Darlene, and Mark, who are living at home. There is one grandchild, Markie Tapscott, who is here with his mother.

     He was ever a kind father, and although possessed of meager worldly goods, he gave his children an education and a good name, one that never would cause them to blush. Morally upright, honest, and strictly temperate, he was an easy going, good hearted man who, if he had something which a neighbor needed worse than he did, loaned it to the neighbor.

     Mr Walrath was a skillful gardener and his chief amusement was catching fish. We read of the fishing expeditions of Daniel Webster and our presidents, but we have no doubt that Mr Walrath excelled them all in this most delicate and interesting sport.

     He was a strong, industrious man until a year ago last summer, when he developed serious heart trouble. Since then he has been an invalid, with growing weakness and distress, until at last he earnestly desired release from the worn out body."

DALE ELWIN WATERS

     Private Dale E Waters second son of Mr and Mrs Elwin A Waters, was born Feb 4,1892 near Clarinda, Iowa, died Dec 9,1918 in Camp Fremont, Cal, of infection of the hip, at the age of 26 years, 10 months and 5 days.

     He leaves to mourn his departure his father, mother, 3 sisters, Mrs Della Leona Dickau,Ina Lee, Eva Lena, 3 brothers, Dewey Warren, Frank Holiday, Dallas Clark, besides a host of friends.

     He entered the service of his country May 2,1918. He belonged to the amunition train Co E. Had been in camp only a short time when he contracted scarlet fever and was sent to the hospital was recovering from that when he took the mumps. On recovering from this he again entered the training squad with a great desire to go to France, but he did not pass the overseas examination, having previously sent home his belongings expecting to go over with his company, and his family not hearing from him supposed he had sailed; When a letter was received from him saying he did not get to go and had been too disappointed to write home. Said he had been training hard, had been on guard duty until he had given out and was again in the hospital with what was thought to be rheumatism. Following this came a telegram from the ward surgeon saying that Dale's condition was critical. The father and brother, Dewey hastened to his bedside, a distance of 2000 miles arriving there about 3 hours too late. Death came while unconscious, he never knew that his brother Howard had preceded him only 1 month and 10 days.

     Dale was a young man of excellent character, quiet, sober, honest and always faithful to his duties.

     He was highly spoken of by his comrades. His doctor and nurse spoke of him as being so patient altho his suffering was great. His comrades showed the love and esteem inwhich he was held by covering his casket with beautiful flowers before it was transferred to the train. The remains were brought home to Atkinson for burial. Funeral services were held for the 2 brothers, Howard M and Dale E on Sunday at 11 o'clock, December 15 in the M E Church,Pastor assisted by Revs Berg and Cook and the remains laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors by returned soldiers and Home Guards.

     Hereafter the family service flag will have two gold stars in the place of the two blue ones of such a short time before.

     Howard M the son and brother, who died somewhere in France Oct 29 was a young man of notable stability. He was kindhearted, generous and industrious. Was an attendant at Church services in which he was very attentive to the message and also took part in the Sunday School. He rode to town with me a number of times and I must say he was very gentlemanly in his conversation. Sometime before he left to join the colors I gave him a new Testament and admonished him to read it and to put his trust in God. With tears in his eyes he promised to do so and I have every reason to believe that Howard kept his promise.

     Dale, also, was a very respectful and industrious young man, an attendant at church and Sunday School. He won the friendship of all who knew him. These two noble sons of America came with their parents to Pawnee County, Nebraska at the age of 9 and 11 years and in 1913 came with them to Holt County and settled 16 miles southwest of Atkinson.

     Dale entered into military service May 2,1918, leaving with the Camp Dodge contingent, and soon after was transferred to France. They volunteered to march out under the stars and stripes, for a noble cause, known to us all. They did not stop to count the cost; but in the highest spirit of true partiotism bravely offered their lives on the altar of service in the cause of righteousness.

HOWARD MAYBURN WATERS

     Private Howard Mayburn Waters, eldest son of Mr and Mrs E A Waters was born near Clarinda, Iowa, May 1,1889 and died Oct 29, somewhere in France of bronchial pneumonia at the age of 29 years, 5 months 29 days.

     He entered the service of his country July 22,1918, leaving with the Camp Dodge contingent. He leaves to mourn his departure, his father, mother, 4 brothers, 2 sisters, besides a host of friends. One brother, Dale E Waters is in the service at Camp Fremont, Cal.

     He was a young man of exemplary habits, generous, industrious, gentlemanly, a favorite with all who knew him. He attended the Agricultural school at Lincoln for a time and was engaged in work at Wisner before entering the army. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen.

     Instead of 2 blue stars, there will henceforth be 1 gold and 1 blue on this family service flag and the gold will always speak of a loved and worthy son who gave his life in the cause of right.

MRS ELENORA WERNER

     Elenora Werner nee Kramer, was born Oct 29, 1842 at Nazreth, Northhampten Co, Penn, and died at her home at Atkinson, Feb 25,1920 at the age of 77 years 3 months 27 days.

     On Sept 6, 1862 she was united in marriage to Elias Werner who preceded her in death in 1907.

     This union was blessed with 11 childen of whom 2 died in infancy: Those remaining to mourn the departure of a tender and loving mother are: Mrs W H Sweeney of Creston, Iowa; Mrs H S Schaeffer of Neligh; Mrs Gerty Raymer of Atkinson; Henry Werner of Emmet and Wayne; Ida, Alice, Elsie and Carrie residing at home. Also 10 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many other relatives and friends.

     Mrs Werner moved to Franklin, Ill in Dec 1865 then to Freeport, Ill in 1868 and to Atkinson in March 1885 where she lived until the time of her death.

     She was converted and joined the Evangelical Church at the age of 16 years continuing a faithful service until taken to her Eternal reward. The funeral services were held at the home at 10 am Fri, Feb 27,1920. Interment was made at Woodlawn Cem. Rev F F Cook officiated.
