Hayes McGraw BROKEN BOW — Hayes McGraw, 77, died Dec. 7, 1997, at the Sargent Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 25, 1920, to Charles and Emily Bader McGraw on a farm near Gates, where he attended school and graduated at the age of 16. The fall following graduation, he began teaching in a rural school. He received his bachelor’s degree from Kearney State College in 1954 and his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957. He taught in rural and town schools in Nebraska, and he also taught at Wayne State College, Kearney State College and Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. Mr. McGraw was the Custer County superintendent for 16 years. He was a Professional Penman and held a professional and teacher’s certificate in manuscript and cursive writing. He enjoyed many sports, raising flowers and he also performed as a clown at many county fairs and celebrations. Survivors include a sister, Carol Swartz of Grand Island and a brother, Myron of Gates; four nieces; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James T. and Max. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, with burial in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
