Charley and Maude Johnson

Charley Barrington Johnson was born 1880 near Van Wert, Iowa. On April 15,
1903, he married Maude Matilda Gibbs. Maude was born in 1879 in Burt County,
Nebraska. Charley and Maude first lived in the Garfield Community then moved
to a farm near Gandy, Nebraska where Charley was in partnership with Mansfield
Mercantile.
Their children: Glenn Leroy was born in 1904, Forrest
Melvin in 1907 and Caryl Edith in 1909.
In 1912, when the town of Stapleton began, the Mercantile
was moved to Stapleton. A new home was built and the family moved to Stapleton.
A daughter, Gertrude May was born in 1913 and a son Russell Emory was born
in 1914. Charley sold his share of the Mercantile in 1918 and they moved to
the Gibbs Homestead in the Nesbit Community west of Stapleton. They lived in
the sod house until the new house was built.
Charley owned and operated a threshing machine which he threshed grain for neighbors
for many years. Charley was a road overseer for many years. Charley and Maude
opened their home for many community gatherings, such as prayer meetings, Red
Cross Meetings, showers and parties. A daughter Lucille Esther, was born in
1919. The children attended the Nesbit grade School, and the Baker Rural High
School. They all graduated from there except Gertrude, who passed away in 1929
a few months from before she was to graduate. Charley, Maude and Gertrude were
buried in the Loup Valley Cemetery.
Their five children and their families are: Glenn married Edith Austin, who
taught school in the Nesbit and the Gandy Grade Schools. Their children are
Patricia Ann, twins Darlene Fae and Marlene Rae. Forrest married Bethel Bay.
Bethel passed away in 1980. Forrest lives in Lancaster, California. Their
children are: Donzal Keith and Doris Jean. A son Kenneth Forrest passed away
when he was 17 years of age. Bethel and Kenneth were buried in the North Platte
Cemetery. Caryl married Ivan Jones, Caryl taught in several grade schools
in Logan County. They lived in Arnold, Nebraska and still manage their farm
dear Gandy. Russell married Lucy Fablinger. They live on the farm in the Nesbit
Community where Russell's Grandparents Gibbs homesteaded. Their children are
Thomas Lee and Jacqueline Kay. Lucille married Milford Fowler. Lucille taught
school in Logan County. They live on their farm near Gandy. Their children
are Ronald Milford and Esther Elaine. Charley married Pearl Kelly May 19,
1946. Members of the Johnson family have lived in Logan County for about 70
years, contributing to the welfare of the communities they lived.
