Charley B. Johnson Is Laid To Rest In Loup Valley Cemetery
Funeral services for Charley B. Johnson were held Sunday,
at 2:30pm at the Presbyterian Church in Stapleton, with Rev. Edward Holub Officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Edward Holub and Mrs. Darrell Ready, accompanied
by Mrs. Wm. Ambler, organist.
Pallbearers were O.E. Abrams, Chester Barner, Myron Bakewell, Edward McPherrin,
Merald Chapman, and Mervin Rogers.
Honorary pallbearers were Lester Joy, George Bay, Ed Fox, Floyd Fowler, Clark
Andre, George Smith, Merrit Bakewell, John Worrell, Roy Ready, and Raleigh Reynolds.
Internment was in Loup Valley Cemetery, with the Quig Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.
Charley Barrington Johnson was the eldest son of Thomas M. and Huldah Hoffa
Johnson. He was born August 2, 1880 at their farm near Van Wert Iowa. He died
at the hospital in Arnold, following a lengthy illness, on March 31, 1955, at
the age of 74 years, 7 months and 29 days.
At the age of four years, he came with his parents to live on a farm in the
Garfield Community of northeast Lincoln County, where he grew to young manhood.
On April 15, 1903, he was united in marriage to Maude M. Gibbs, also of this
community. To this union were born six children: Glenn, Forrest, Caryl, Gertrude,
Russell, and Lucille. Mr. Johnson and his family lived successively
in the Garfield, Gandy, Stapleton and Nesbit Communities. He was member of
the Mansfield & Co. Mercantile firm for five years, 1912-1917, in Gandy and
Stapleton. After leaving Stapleton, except for one year spent on a farm south
of town, Charley and his family resided in the Nesbit community west of Stapleton.
His wife Maud, passed away on November 23, 1942.
On May 17, 1946, Mr. Johnson was united in marriage to Pearl Kelly, a life long
resident of Logan County. Charley and Pearl have lived in Stapleton the past
four years since retiring from the farm.
Mr. Johnson had been active in church, and in church school work, all his life,
as well as taking quite an active part in civic affairs. He was also a man
who valued and appreciated his many friends in this and other communities.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl: His children: Glenn of Murray; Forrest of
Lancaster California; Mrs. Ivan Jones of Gandy, and Russell and Mrs. Milford
Fowler of Stapleton; seven grand children; one great grand child; three step-children,
Albert Kelly and Mrs. Duane Thomas of Stapleton, and Mrs. Chris Nieson, of Eugene
Oregon, two step grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Ada Woods of Emmett , Idaho;
Mrs. Faye Long, of North Platte, and Mrs. Martha of Billings Montana, and a
brother, Samuel A. Johnson of Hastings.
One daughter, Gertrude, preceded him in death.
