Russell Emory Johnson, youngest son of Charley and Maude Gibbs Johnson was born
June 5, 1914, at Stapleton, Nebraska and died January 1, 1992, at the North
Platte hospital. He grew up in the Nesbit community, attending the rural school
and graduating from Baker Rural High School at Stapleton. After graduation he
worked on the family farm with his father and also worked for other farmers.
In April 1942 Russell enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific
area as a member of the anti-aircraft battery of the U.S.S. Idaho, Corporal
Johnson was honorably discharged in October 1945.
On June 3, 1951, Russell and Lucy Fablinger were married at the First Presbyterian
Church of Stapleton.
The Johnsons spent their entire married life on the farm 9 1/2 miles west of
Stapleton which was homesteaded by Russell's grandparents, Prince and Nancy
Gibbs.
Through the years Russell served his community in many way: member of the Stapleton
school board, on the ASCS committee, 4-H leader, as a director of the Federal
Land Bank of North Platte. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church
of Stapleton and served as a trustee. Russell was also a member of Edwin L.
Magnusin VFW Post 8258 and Victor H. Peterson American Legion Post 324.
Before his illness, early June 1991 brought Russell and his family some special
highlights: Russell's 60th high school reunion with 6 classmates, his 77th birthday
and his and Lucy's 40th wedding anniversary. His great love was his home, family,
grandchildren, his land and livestock.
He served God and his Country in life and in death by donating his eyes for
medical research.
Military honors were conducted in the Loup Valley Cemetery at 10:30 A.M. by
the veterans organizations of Stapleton.
God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flowers strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy undying love.
